2014/2015 Roster

With the declining of picking up the options on 3 of our players I thought we would have a lot more flexibility next year with our roster. We have 38 Million in Salaries, but that doesn't include Cousins extension. Lets say it's back loaded a bit, we are probably at 52 million, unless they did a Asik type deal.

With that being said, we probably have about 7-8 million in cap space. With flexibility being a need for next year, why did we jump the gun on Moute and Landry. I liked the Moute trade at the time, but we have about 12 million more on the books next than we really should.

There has to be a trade, or a couple trades planned to get this flexibility where we want it. I am a bit baffled by the roster right now. It still makes no sense.

they might be playing the long game, positioning themselves for a splash the offseason after next, when guys like Outlaw and Hayes finally expire. it seems that they want to be in the playoffs, when the new arena opens and are going for steady improvement until then. not that they wouldn't want to make the playoffs before, but I wouldn't expect them to force things, not as long as there's still a lot of clutter left over from the last regime that requires cleaning up.

Moute and Landry are exactly the kind of role player veterans we want on this team. Smart, high bball IQ, the know Exactly where their strengths lie and they rely on those strengths. This FO was going to be tied up until the Outlaw, Salmons, Jimmer, Thornton, and Hayes expired. Which is roughly 27 mil of our salary this season FYI

You're trying to assess the results of a work in progress.

I'm assuming with the Carl signing that the Kings don't expect Patterson or JT to be on the roster by next season.

Actually we have much more than 38 million + DMC. The correct amount should be 39.669.088$ (Salmons can be waived, but 1 million will remain in our salary cap if I remember correctly). Than we have to add DMC, maybe around 14,5 million next year. The total would be 54 million. Than add the rookies, our first round pick could be around 2-3 million. Than, we also have our free agents. Vasquez, Patterson and Thomas. Maybe we will let Patterson walk, but I would guess Vasquez and IT will be signed. After that, we will be over the limit and we won't have any cap room to go after free agents, except for the mid level exception (the salary caps next year should be around 62 million).
That said, we can only improve via trade, and I'd guess there must be some trades in the upcoming months. We have some expiring contracts that could be packed with longer deals (MT, Hayes, Outlaw), so let's hope PDA finds the right deals for us.

This seems to be it in a nut shell. The 5 people mentioned have little value to us and I am beginning to wonder about Vasquez as number 6. GV's main skill seems to be that he is a leader and is 6'6" and that's a good start. It is way too early to judge, I realize, especially about him. Given another reliable shooter, and I don't consider Thornton as reliable, all we need at PG for the starter is leadership and a predictable game. The part of IT's game that drives me nuts (a short trip, to be honest) is that he needs to trust that others on the court can score and he doesn't need to be the entire show. He is still young especially for a PG so I suspect he will improve. The Mutt and Jeff pair of IT and Vasquez is just fine so far given we are three games into the season. IT is perfect off the bench if the bench has no shooters. IF we have no shooters. Unfortunately he now comes off the bench with the guy who may be our best shooter and he hasn't figured that out these three games into the season.

The only way any of these 5 can be used in a trade is to bundle a two for one deal and at this point, I would rather keep our own expirings unless a great deal falls into our lap. We need to seriously shop Thornton and Hayes as a pair in a 2 for on trade. Neither has much to offer another team but certainly someone might like Thornton.

I see PPat being let go unless he gels with the team and his shooting picks up. Perhaps he isn't as good as some people thought or maybe he just isn't comfortable with his team mates. I doubt the latter but he will be given a chance. He really couldn't be in a more perfect situation and is blowing it. For a guy who is supposed to be a shooter (same with Thornton), he can't shoot.

We picked up Outlaw because he was an inexpensive veteran whose salary was going to be paid in large part by another team. I don't think that was much of a bargain. I do not understand the acquisition of Salmons and that whole draft day fluster cluck concerning Salmons and Jimmer. They both have not offered much. It seemed like the FO had Jimmer targeted and saw a way of acquiring another player in the process. Turns out the other player is an albatross.

We are desperate for above average skill. We are over our heads in average to below average skill that are not useful on the court and maybe are not desirable in a trade. It's a mess and the requirement that a certain minimum be met in salaries does not make it easy to acquire a major free agent. In other words, it is difficult to have cap space. I sure don't know how to get out of this mess but a good start would be to resist the impulse to acquire people that are of little use.

I almost wonder if PPat has been thrust into a starting role, that he never really thought he would have? As a result, maybe it has thrown off his game just enough, where his shooting touch is out of rhythm?

At the end of last season when he was playing very well, I still wonder if he believed that he'd be a regular starter in the NBA? Maybe he's out of his comfort zone? I know he's very solid in the stretch 4 role off the bench.

Landry is our starter at this point, when he's healthy. JT is a solid backup for his style and so is PPat for his different style.

Still don't see how Landry works as a starter. Below average passer, defender and rebounder whose primary skill is extremely efficient low post scoring which is about the last thing you pair with cousins. Off the bench with that second unit, he could help a great deal but probably not worth the contract and its impact on our cap space flexibility.

It's something some kings fans seem to struggle with. You don't just throw out the 5 best players as starters. Fit matters almost as much as talent.

This season's starter. Not the solution as a starter to advance in the playoffs two seasons from now.

With our current roster, I believe that Landry thinks he's a starter and I wonder if PPat really believes that he is. In other words, the mental aspect overrides what may or may not be on the 'scouting report' on paper

I hope we keep a close eye on Avery Bradley he has a QO after this season and it would be intresting to see what Boston decides to do with their backcourt going forward. Let Vasquez, Patterson, Salmons and Jimmer walk and we can put ourselves in a position to sign him.

Wouldn't mind him as a backup 2 but we'd still need a starting pg
