2006 Vegas Summer League (merged)

Maraker on board -- When the Kings leave for summer league in Las Vegas on Wednesday, former Pacific forward Christian Maraker will join them, reports the Record in Stockton. The 2006 Big West Conference Player of the Year had two workouts with the Kings before Wednesday's draft, but was not selected.

According to the same article, we are interested in Speedy Claxton, Devean George, Darius Songaila and Joel Przybilla. DJ Mbenga was another one but he has agreed to terms with Mavs

YES!!! We are going after Joel. That rules. I hope Geoff accepts Philips counter offer. From this article it sounds like Bonzi is truly the Kings to lose.

Speedy or Joel!? JOEL!!!! SPEEDY!!!

Brad and Joel could work I'm telling you.

A Bibby/Bonzi/Ron/Brad/Joel lineup would be unbelievable I hope it happens. :)

A little displeased to here we are interested in Darius however.

I hope Bonzi comes back and we can trade some unused pieces for Joel in a S+T.

Keep the most promising of the undrafted guys on the bench (1-2) in case of emergency, and stash another in the D league if we still have to fill out 13-14 players.

I am not so worried about the backup PG spot - we have a platoon of young folks who can learn/help while Artest and Garcia have shown some skill bringing the ball up from other positions as well.

I take it that one of SAR or KT is gone so they would possibly see him as a back up PF and he is a good shooter and passer.

I would rather have Przybilla thanks :)
Hell, I would rather have KENNY.

That pursuit would certainly put the Maloofs "players don't matter for defense" mantra to the test. Here Muss, let's see you stop somebody with Brad/SAR/Darius. Not easy to concoct an even softer big man rotation than what we currently have, but there you go.

I really think this article was a "agents call the Bee to get their client's name as many different newspapers as possible" article. There's no way the Kings could be interested in Songaila and George.

And what do Songaila and George have in common?? They're both represented by Mark Bartelstein, who must have called up Amick. So let's not lose sleep over this one.

Just a gentle reminder...this is the summer league thread. It gets really confusing to have to keep wading through a myriad of trade comments to find out what's actually going on with the summer plans...

I don't think you have both Brad/Pryz, you trade Brad and get a PF in there. Not two centers (I don't buy Brad playing PF whether he did in 03-04, he still had Vlade next to him). That's a slow front-court with not much athleticism.

Here is what you don't have:

Brad/Kenny, Brad/SAR, Brad/Pryzbilla.

Here's what you do have:

Defensive center/KT, Brad/defensive-athletic PF, or, my idealistc one defensive center/athletic-defensive PF. :)

I can only see us getting George if we lose Bonzi and want a tough veteran wingman off the bench to replace Bonzi's experience and toughness (like we would need to).

I disagree Kings113. I think you CAN use them together and if a team goes small and we can't we have proven already that you can simply shift Bonzi or Ron to PF. Hopefully Justin or one of the other bigs make the team and they could be used at the PF position with the same effect.

Maraker on Board
But I'm not sure why. Reading his + and - I can't see what he brings. See his recent bio:

Christian Maraker, 6-9, 235, originally from Sweden via UOP
Strengths: Maraker is a versatile player with a very polished offensive game. He shoots the ball well enough from long range to be a capable mismatch threat and is also effective going down into the paint to get off jump-hooks with either hand. His ball-handling skills and first step make him effective as a slashing threat from the perimeter. He is highly intelligent, which shows up both in his off-the-ball movement and his passing skills.
Weaknesses: Maraker is caught between the 3 and the 4 spots in the NBA. His offensive game leads you to believe he’s a small forward. His size and lack of lateral quickness on the perimeter, combined with the fact he’s not a prolific 3-point shooter, lead you to believe that he is more of a power forward. Athleticism is the main obstacle he will have to overcome, with the second being defense and rebounding ability.
Outlook: Maraker is undoubtedly a highly-skilled offensive player, but there are questions about whether he’s skilled enough to make up for his shortcomings. A good showing in Portsmouth helped, but he needs to do it again in Orlando to have a shot at being drafted in the second round.

There is a list of the Kings summer league roster on Kings.com if anyone is not sure who is on the roster or not. Apparently Artest decided to include himself in the equation.

SAR/Brad/Songaila and a ? is not an improvement in the area of interior defense and rebounding and athleticism. It's just more soft and less of the aforementioned needs. No shotblocking, little athleticism, little rebounding. SAR's post-game is the only compliment to Brad and Songaila.

Songaila on this team should be a thrid man at best, and I'd rather have one of the summer league bigs who makes the team and has qualities we need.

Would be nice to see a guy over 6' 10" out there OTHER than Lampely but oh well Muss does seem to know the guy. givng Pooh Jeter a shot at PG is interesting. He kind of reminds me Early Boykins but then all the those little guys look alike to me ;)
