1140 - Grant

All -

I know that Napear has been ranted against for years in this forum and others I frequent (Sactownroyalty.com, et al) but for me I had always marginally enjoyed his show as background noise whenever I've had to drive places at that time in the afternoon. His antics and the way he treats his calls irritates me at times but I've put up with it because heck, I enjoy kings talk.

For the first time yesterday, I literally got sick to my stomach and had to turn him off as he vociferously defended the completely indefensible Thomas Robinson trade. I won't go into the reasons as to why the trade is just completely terrible since they're being debated elsewhere but I just couldn't listen to someone with such an ignorant position.

I'm thinking he must know his time in SAcramento is coming to an end and the only way he gets a job elsewhere (whether it be the team here in Sac if it stays, or up to Seattle) is by defending an otherwise indefensible ownership group. Maybe he thinks if he trashes ownership/management, he would have a hard time getting a job elsewhere? I can't see any other reason for even trying to defend the trade.

Grant: "I don't care about three years from now, I care about now. This is a better basketball team with Patrick Patterson." So we go from ending the season with 28 wins instead of 27 wins? And if we keep him, he's much more expensive than Thomas Robinson would be for the two years following that?

It's all terrible. The Maloof family is terrible, Grant is terrible for defending the indefensible, and the NBA is borderline terrible for allowing situations like these to occur.

The ONLY way this trade could have made any sense is if we were right on the cusp of being a playoff team where a few extra wins would get us a playoff spot. It's still be an incredibly short-sighted deal, but there might have been some sense into that line of thinking.

Unfortuantely, we've been out of the playoff race for a good 3 weeks now

Above quote corrected.

Exactly.

He's without a doubt going to on the chopping block when the keys are turned over to Burkle. (we the fans will make sure of it) CM Dave will you step up to plate to do the play by play or color commentary?

An interesting comment in this mornings media was the fact that this trade has nothing (directly) to do with the value of the team in any sale. It has IMHO only to do with the dire need of the Maloofs for cash. They get immediate cash now and lower the payroll until the team is sold. Lowering the value by $3.3M from the trade vs. the fixed price offered for the team yields some $$ down the road but the trade yielded immediate cash.

Having said that, the team gets better right now with Paterson and may have found a diamond in the rough in Aldrich as a true back up 6-11 center. Playoffs? No but look at the standings, Recently we were only 3 wins behind the Lakers and 2 behind the Mavs. To end up ahead of those teams is a BIG deal for the Kings. Sure Coaching sucks but help where needed can get a few more wins and thats all it may take to getup to 10th in the west. I loved TRob as much as anyone but he was not coming along as a 5th pick or 2nd best in the draft should have. Giving up? Maybe not? Getting better? Maybe. Lets see.

Yes - team does get slightly better with Patterson, so they go from a 28 win team to a 29 win team? Patterson has hit his ceiling - an efficiently scoring big who is an ok defender who can't rebound a lick. With T-Rob, you still have no idea what he'll bring long-term and my main point is, why trade him after half of a season for a 3rd/4th big and cash?

Of course, I wish for success in this situation for our new Kings but it isn't about them; it's about a broke a-- ownership group determine to suck every $ it can out of the situation, basketball moves be damned.

I think hes ok when doing play by play and not talking about sports but he seriously needs to get off of the radio as it is an obvious conflict of interest. He is misguiding the fair weather fans who go solely to him for kings talk as he has been doing for years, always a company man spewing the company line rarely ever calling out the gigantic mistakes petrie/magoofs have made.

its funny to listen to him absolutely kill jerry jones, dan snyder etc for how they run there teams when the absolute worst owners in sports are right here in sac.

I've listened to Grant on 1140 for over 20 years, but after yesterday I'm done listening to him. Hearing him completely dog Thomas Robinson and act like fans are idiots for thinking it's a bad trade was just the last straw for me. I'm tired of this mouthpiece......great PBP guy, but I refuse to listen to his radio show again.

I totally agree. And even then it would be dubious because you've traded for more rebounding weakness, exactly what the team doesn't need.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who just got sick yesterday. For once in your life Grant - grow a spine and just tell the truth. Don't sound like an idiot and defend the indefensible.

Jim Crandall essentially said the same thing the other night. He was questioning the fan backlash regarding this trade on the premise that Patterson is "way" better than Robinson. Way better?? That's a HUGE stretch.

Patterson is in his 3rd season and SHOULD be more polished and refined than Robinson at this point. However, as has been pointed out numerous times by numerous fans, Robinson has much more upside and this team should be making moves based upon the future, not the here and now. While Robinson has not played up to a level equal to his draft status, he is nowhere near a bust just yet. Honestly, I'll be very surprised -- and shocked -- if Robinson is not a better player than Patterson by his 3rd season.

Despite limited minutes and playing on a dysfunctional team, Robinson's rebound numbers already match Patterson's and his offensive game will improve over time. I think history will show you that it's easier for a player to improve his scoring capabilities than it is for a player to suddenly learn how to rebound, pass or play defense. By year 3, I'm feel quite confident that Robinson will be at least an equal scorer to Patterson but will be a MUCH better rebounder and defender.

Even if Aldrich is a "diamond in the rough" and we found him, it is irrelevant given that he is a unrestricted free agent at season end.

Grant being Grant.

He LOVES every move a bottom 5 NBA team has made over the past 7 years. That should tell you all you need to know.

He loved the Landry deal. He loved the Salmons deal. He loved the Hickson deal. He loves this deal. He loved signing Hayes. He loves every move this team has ever made. He loved the Robinson pick (and now he is backtracking) According to him we come out on top in every single trade. It's a shame this team with a 100% trade winning percentage is still so terrible.

Lost in all the ranting about Grant is the fact he works for Maloof Sports & Entertainment and is therefore their mouthpiece and says what they want him to say. He went too far yesterday. Easy to stop online KHTKAM down here.

Even looking at it through a highly optimistic yet pointless view as this, the trade is still indefensible in terms of the players you got in return for Robinson. From what we've heard, the other GMs around the league were blindsided by this. Basically, Morey got first access to a firesale with no standards other than cost cutting. The Kings threw away the two best assets in this trade: Robinson and Cisco's contract, and got a bunch of bench players of minor importance.

Not picking on you CruzDude, you're just giving me great things to respond to or rant about.

One of my many problems with Grant is that I feel his behavior, defended by the reason of the Maloofs being his employer, hurts others via the low, low, low standard of integrity and honesty he sets. The ridiculous opinions he'll put forth for the purpose of a paycheck lowers the standard for honesty and integrity in his business. He hurts other people by establishing how far an employee will go to keep a job. Anyone with a bit of integrity now faces the reality of Grant's shameless behavior as competition. He is the poison of post-irony and it hurts others in a tough economy.

Carmichel Dave, and Grant, are very close friends. So don't expect Dave to undercut Grant.
