“The List”

#1
Let’s discuss the players the Athletic says we are interested in. I believe them more than the Sidery types.

Cam Johnson
Jerami Grant
Kuzma and Jonas (the pair)
John Collins

I’m leaving off DFS because the interest is allegedly minimum.

All 4 options have flaws. Cam could cost us Devin if you believe the reports. Grant is a bit older and a bit longer contract. Kuzma/Jonas is only interesting to me as a package. Kuzma is a talent upgrade but will he accept a role player situation or would he still rather be a number one or two on a bad team? Collins produces but does he help you win?

if I was a betting man I’d bet that one of those deals gets done before the deadline to appease Lord Fox.

Which one do you prefer?

To me, it ultimately depends on the price the other team is willing to accept. All of these would presumably start with Huerter and Lyles, the question is what sweetner is needed?

Utah got Collins for nothing, doesn’t really want to win now, and would save several million by splitting his deal for a package that includes Lyles expiring contract. Does that mean they’d settle for something less than a first? If so, I’d prefer that route, even if Collins is potentially the least impactful of the bunch. I am wary of trading Carter or multiple firsts to save this core at this point.

What does Collins cost knowing it's Ainge we're dealing with? God f that dude. He probably wants 3 firsts. lol.

I like the idea of Collins, Keegan sliding back to 3 and DDR coming off the bench. Assuming he doesn't cost us much.

Couple kings people on Twitter made a good point you should come close to emptying the barrow to improve this year you’ll get everything back in a fox trade anyways

I like Kuzma it’s a buy low and our frontcourt depth is pretty much set especially the bench with Kuzma/lyles. With grant we get a good defender and shooter probably only have to give up a first but we’d lose both Huerter and Lyle’s.

I don’t want to part with Devin Carter if that’s what getting Cam entails. Otherwise yes please.

Im intrigued most by adding Jonas because Brown doesn’t seem to trust any of the current bigs that should be decreasing Domas’s work load. If that means a package that includes Kuzma, im not opposed. I seem to like him more than most.

I’d welcome any of the mentioned . Something needs to change and really want to see Huerter moved.

@iowamcnabb on a more serious note….

Cam Johnson has average size/length as a SF. In fact, his measurements are very similar to DeRozan. He’s not the right target as we need to add a player with more size, length, and defense to help address our glaring weakness.

Kuzma just makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth at this point. He’s not a good shooter from 3, he hasn’t been a good defender, and he’s not an efficient scorer. What are we even considering here? Valanciunas is solid as a backup C, but I have other backup C targets I would prefer (especially if WAS is demanding a 1st).

John Collins has the size for PF but he’s not the defender that I would hope for at that spot. I also don’t think he’s very versatile defensively in that he’s always seemed a little heavier on his feet vs. some of these other guys that are listed. I wouldn’t be overly outraged if Monte decided to trade for Collins (as long as he didn’t give up any significant assets) but it’s far from my 1st choice considering he’s not a good defender, he doesn’t seem like hat versatile defensively, and his current contract value would require us to send out two rotation players (Huerter + Lyles) which would hurt our depth.

It probably comes as no surprise to anyone that Jerami Grant would be my preferred choice out of this list. Yes, he would also require two rotation players to make the deal work (Huerter & Lyles) but unlike Collins, he has a much higher defensive ceiling, is much more versatile defensively, and can be a go-to scoring option. In fact, I think a Jerami Grant trade that would be solid for us would be…

You gotta get Keegan his brother in a multi player trade with the Blazers

if you add any of those guys you are banking on them being better in lesser roles. My concern is no one on that list plays with fire and intensity. If I’m Monte I want guys that play with force on both sides. Can migt be the guy that does it the best on the list but the price is too high. I’m a bit less concerned with size than you, I just want dawgs.

Gotta go get Bobby Portis, who is reportedly being singled in trade talks for some reason, then

After sleeping on the list I’m still struggling to figure out the best course of action. Jerami Grant shot 38 percent from the field in November and 34 percent from 3. It’s been a bit better in December but that production worries me a bit. Cam Johnson has had ten teams call about him. Not willing to outbid that many teams.

Right now I think I’ve moved Collins to the top of the list. I know I’m getting shooting, rebounding and a lob threat. He is just 27 and under team control for 2 more years. I wish I trusted his defense more but who knows.

Still leaves us without a back up center that I’m comfortable with. We might not have enough matching salary for that.
