There is no way that this is a suprise to all involved, so I don't know why we would worry about that. The NBA, Maloofs and City feel they have the numbers worked out. This would not be the point in time for them to be guessing about what the city could put in to funding this thing.
Agreed.

I bet they had some ballpark numbers from the SOQ results and know what they will be able to get from the parking.

KJ has been two steps ahead of everyone on this. He's been playing this whole game with the cards close to his vest. No way he gets caught short this close to the goal.

Aha, but perhaps better communication with the people is necessary. Is Grant educating them?
I've tried in the Bee's forums, but they never respond when you give them real facts. They just come up with some other nonsense or wait for the next article to make the same moronic posts over and over. Not only that, but whenever an answer to their objections is come up with, they just come out with other objections. It's a no-win situation with real CAVE people. I gave up when they started attacking me personally, when they couldn't win the argument based on research, facts or figures.

Actually, if they broke ground this summer, the arena would open in time for the 2014-15 season. The problem is that you have to line up contractors, move the tracks and go through a bunch of other political bs so I'm guessing that they break ground in 2013.

Also, do they have to do an environmental impact review? That alone takes a year.
The arena project will benefit from the newly passed state legislation allowing a streamlined environmental process for major projects. Los Angeles got their reps to sponsor such a bill to speed up the environmental processes for their proposed football stadium.

Well, our Senator Steinberg from Sacramento decided is it's good for Los Angeles, it should apply to mmajor projects everywhere. He got legislation passed. Yay for our Senator Steinberg! It may the only favor LA as ever done for a North State city. ;)

Darrell Fong, if I remember correctly, was the decisive vote on the original loan to the Kings in the 90's, I believe. Ironic that it might come down to him again.
Nope. He wasn't on the council back then. It was an Asian councilman (I can't think of his name right now), but he retired. D. Fong has voted no right down the line on every arena vote. R. Fong will vote yes.

Edit: The swing vote on the $70 million loan was Councilman Jimmie Yee. Robert Fong replaced him following Yee's retirement. BTW, that loan probably saved the Kings from being sold then.

It was Jimmie Yee. What a hero he turned out to be - a reluctant one - but eventually a staunch backer of all things Kings including support for Mayor Johnson.

Ah right. I was around the wee age of 7 or 8 when this was all actually happening so I've had to rely on other people for all that info. Thanks for clearing that up.

Cosigned, I used to go back and forth with them a lot but it's a no win situation. In the end it's better focusing your efforts else where. These people aren't seriously having objections or questions that need to be answered, they just don't want it done no matter what and continually come up with ridiculous BS as not to lose the argument/their position. They're mostly idiots. It's not like wasting time arguing with these morons on the Sac Bee will get it done, things like Mike and the crew going to the city council were what helped us get to this point.

By the way. The gap between what the city wanted and what the Maloofs wanted to give was apparently fixed in a major way by AEG agreeing to raise their upfront contribution from $50 million to $60 million.

So a big THANK YOU to AEG for stepping up!

Brings the name Don Quixote to mind. :) I meant more about Grant and the organization being the educators.

I smell Burkle in the background. Even if he isn't, $10 mil should not cause such a problem for an ownership seriously thinking of doing big things with their franchise.

$10 million is $10 million, even if you're a multi-millionaire. They were negotiating no differently than we do when we go buy a new car at the Honda dealership. I don't think it has anything to do with them having a problem coming up with the money.

As someone that's had a thing or two to say about Kings arena plans, I'm very happy. This one looked like a real deal. Everybody gave to make this happen. It was a win/win deal, which was the only way it was going to happen.

In 2004, it was about the city getting over on the Maloofs and vice versa.
Q & R tried to pass the buck to the tax payers.
Cal Expo 1 and 2 tried to pass the buck to the state.

In the end, KJ got smart and creative and everybody made it work.

We aren't home, but we are on the downside of the hill.

I doubt it, the developers have already been going through that, right?

It would go, draft EIS or FONSI (in this case it may be a FONSI, since the railyards are desolute), demonstrate compliance with NEPA if no EIS is required, or facilitate the EIS, which may take waaaaaaaaay more than a year. In CA we have CEQA and call impact statements EIRs, which is just elitist. :)

Don't forget that the Sate Legislature recently passed a bill to streamline and shorten the environmental process on big projects. LA wanted this for their new football stadium. Our Senator Steinberg said, if its good for LA, it should be good for any city with big projects, so he got that legislation passed. YAY!

I hearby predict (assuming no unforseen road blocks) that new Sports & Entertainment complex at the railyards in downtown Sacramento will be open (perhaps soft opening) in early/mid 2015 - before that seasons NBA schedule gets underway. Just knowing how things are usually done at excruciating snails pace in California - makes even that soon a minor miracle.

I don't have a clue what this means.

A lot of thanking, applause etc...

But this is important piece of info!:

David Bienick ‏ @kcrabienick

Council member Steve Cohn says this looks like a good deal for city. Sounds like a yes vote on #arena.

Rob McAllister ‏ @Rob_McAllister

Cohn: I haven't always been in favor of public financing on an arena, but I feel we are really going to get this done"

A definite vote! :D

Oh, and KJ just said that the NBA chipped in! Not that we didn't know this, but a confirmation!

I wonder in what way and by how much they are "contributing"

The press conference wasn't anything special. They said they'll have a much more detailed report in a few days, and the design plans are about a month away

Sorry Ryan. Anytime someone talks about the arena right now, it's awesome. I'll come down off the cloud sooner or later, but not today.

Thanks Kennadog. There's also the issue of moving the tracks towards the historic buildings so that they can fit the arena in. I'm wondering how long that will take. Is there any chance that they can do all this stuff simultaneously and break ground as early as this August or is that just impossible at this point?

They are working on that right now.

Downtown Sacramento train riders, get ready to take a hike.
Passengers will find themselves walking the equivalent of two blocks across an expanse of dirt this summer when the city opens new passenger platforms in the downtown railyard.
The platforms for Amtrak and Capitol Corridor train riders, scheduled for July and August openings, are part of a multimillion-dollar track relocation project to make room for development in the largely empty railyard.

I don't think it's too much. If they chip in too much, Milwaukee, Detroit and any other city looking for a new arena is going to ask for the same amount. If anything, I was thinking that they were going to loan the upfront money to the Maloofs and then get paid back over time. Is that no longer the case and it's just a gift pitch in?

I'm guessing that the sale of the land is supposed to cover the full $75 million that the Maloofs will contribute up front since they're so broke. If it doesn't cover the whole thing then I have to imagine that the league will cover the remainder and expect to be paid back.

The tracks are being moved now. I can't be sure, but I think they are looking at summer to be finished.

Here's a recent update.. http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,2684440
