Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

Man I wish we were going 40. There's still tons of great undrafted bands that i feel bad for not picking. And we haven't even scratched the surface of blues, jazz, country, etc.

There’s a few hipster approved bands that I’m surprised are still available, too.

I’ll name them once this is over.

This is the only hipster band I'll take. Hipsters do not have my approval, but I like this band. They don't have an extensive catalogue but they may have in the future. Very talented young band.

Two Door Cinema Club

I've no idea if any of you even know who they are. Probably not since they're new and haven't broke America. But if you like indie music, there's a good chance you'll like these if you give them a chance.

This pick isn't going to be popular, I can tell. I was actually planning on taking a band here, and literally changed it in the last hour. I stuck on this guys first album while working out and was reminded how much I love it. His other stuff didn't reach the heights of his first album and while I certainly don't put him anywhere near the top artists on the hip-hop scene, I still love that album. And he has enough good songs spattered across his other albums to make this a good pick for me.

Game

The Documentary is a great album, although I suspect this pick will damage my final ranking rather than improve it :p

All music will be in spoilers just incase it's NSFW.

Yeah, this wasn't all that easy either, but in the end I went with what is the more relevant to me now.

Frittenbude
(lyrics translated by yours truly to the best of his meagre abilities)
with torn up jeans and bloody knees
we lie here and can't
breathe this air anymore
since it constricts our throat
and you decorate my soul
with a few more scars
in that flowery dress with those colours
all that we are, had and have
fits into one hand
because it was always your hand and mine
my mind is everywhere we've ever been
since we're in danger anyway
we can bear nearly everything
but bearing now feels very different
and we've only ever seen others fail
the two of us never were like them
always different, the main thing was never to be like them
always different somehow

First: Nachtigall
Favourite: Nachtigall
Why: Describing Frittenbude is extraordinarily difficult to me. It's basically technically underwhelming rap (with quite clever lyrics, though) to fast-paced synth beats with a Punk attitude. The subject matter ranges from love over partying to social criticism and for some reason they always strike a chord with me. The lyrics I posted above are to the first song I'll link below, just so you can imagine the contrasts they're working with. As for that live vid, you might possibly even see me in that, I'm somewhere in the front sweating my behind off (to the extent that my cellphone, which i had in my pocket, didn't work anymore afterwards).

Ok final pick, #30 is my guiltiest pleasure, Letters to Cleo.

This one is one that would have long been buried in the closet except that I almost always meet someone else from Boston that had the same massive inexplicable crush on Kay Hanley at a time when there was no shortage of cute Boston music ladies. It nets me another female fronted artist and also more from the 90s an era where I have plenty of fond musical memories but not a lot of favorite acts. There's really dozens of other bands that are probably more worthy of this pick here but just cycling through youtube takes me back to such a fun time in my life that I have to do it.

They also showed up on some soundtracks in the late 90s which gets me covers of I Want You to Want Me and Cruel To Be Kind as a nice bonus.

Adding one last entry of classic/folk rock to my collection for nostalgic purposes. This next choice is my father's favorite band of all time, and they're coming to my island bringing their vocal harmonizing, acoustic guitars, and mellow musings. With my 30th and final pick, I select:

Crosby, Stills, and Nash

Great draft everyone, and as we wind down, here's a song before I go.

Webbfan already took Crosby, Stills, Nash & YOUNG - I'm not really sure these are two distinct bands...the discographies overlap on AllMusic.

With this pick I draft, King Diamond.

Every island needs some campy horror metal with an odd-ball vocalist!

King Diamond is actually one of my top ten or so metal acts. He’s a very good songwriter with an ear for great melodies. He’s also a really good producer.
King Diamond has been remarkably consistent over his career, never really releasing a bad album. He’s one of those rare acts where his recent work is nearly on par with his classic work.
I heartily endorse this pick, and this statement. He's who I was thinking of when Alice Cooper was picked. I actually think his vocals are great - maybe it's the falsetto.
On another note, THIS pick reminded me of another metal pick. Crazy!

Seems like a fair pick to me.
I really do think that under rule H:

so long as the lineup remains substantially similar, a band which changes its name is still considered the same group
that these are substantially the same band. We considered Van Halen the same band despite three different lead singers; the in/out/in/out nature of Neil Young here shouldn't make a difference.

I'm with the Capt. on this one, for whatever it's worth, unless webbfan is only taking the catalogue that includes Neil Young. Not sure how that would work out, or if it could. I think the Van Halen rule probably supercedes my opinion, however, because that could open a can of worms.

If all music doesn't make a distinction I think that is the fallback. Also since we've gone 30 rounds without a major issue like this best to just have Jespher re-pick because this will thoroughly confuse any voters that aren't familiar enough or can't be bothered to determine who owns which.

Not familiar enough? One of these groups has Neil Youngs warbly voice, the other doesn't!

I suppose you missed the "can't be bothered" part. Some people know, some people don't. The meat is this:

Do you click on every youtube video for every artist you are unfamiliar with? Be honest.

Fair, but if you cannot tell the difference between a band with Neil Young and one without him... there is something terribly wrong with you.

What's the ruling here guys? I'm at work and can't go back and forth with this at the moment, however I feel they are two distinct bands who obviously have different (similar but DIFFERENT) names. I'll check back in a bit for a verdict :).

I think it is going to require a re-pick...

Just a heads up that I won't be available most of tomorrow. Unless my pick comes up this evening, just skip over me and I'll make my pick when I can. I'm 99% sure my last pick would be available anyway even if we went 50 deep.

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
On the Crosby Stills & Nash issue, I think that's all the same group. If for instance they did not change their name during those times Young is with the band, would you ever think its a new group just because Neil Young was part of the lineup on a particular song/album? Don't think so. So don't want to trample over webbfan's pick here.

Since I have been scratching my head over my own 30th pick jespher can take as lng as he wants on a repick. :)

Also sackings, if you aren't going to be able to pick could you just send that over to Warhawk?
