Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

I enjoy listening to The Killers. Their tunes are catchy and their body of work keeps improving. They're no Maiden, for sure, but I think it's a good pickup in this round.

Ok, so I'm still finding the dozen or so artists sitting at the bottom of my list just not quite ready to be taken. But then I see this band and remember how they just happened to get big at the peak of my music listening. So I know a ton of their songs and several of them are tied to personal memories and such stuff. Plus they have the added benefit of bringing a different sound to my island. So in round 18 I pick...

Hootie and the Blowfish
Haha I wasn't going to take them but I do enjoy some of their music. Hard to believe "Hootie" is a country singer now. And I fairly good one at that

Ha, had completely forgotten they even existed and yet its true they were SO big back in the day.

Anybody know dukesie personally btw? Needs a kick here before this thing snakes back up and endangers a second pick for him. You just can't go out and select Celine Dion as your last pick and then abandon the draft. You just can't. :p

I've never been much of a country music fan, but growing up in the foothills of California I was exposed to a lot of country/folk music. The best aspect of this genre of music surrounds the stories the artists are able to tell, and this next pick is one of my favorite folk singer/storytellers. Furthermore, this gives me a chance to even the gender ratio on my island a bit.

With my 18th selection, I choose:

Mary Chapin Carpenter

And see? All of a sudden I've turned into an anglophile:

The Cult

Despite their success these guys are almost criminally overlooked sometimes when you set about talking about metal bands from back in the day, but I always felt they would have been in my personal Top 5, and certainly I've always felt lead singer Ian Astbury had one of the truly great voices in the business. There was some long hair, but a lot more going on than in the typically vapid hair metal groups. In fact their music moved around quite a bit both before and after their commerical prime in the late 80s to early 90s, starting out more post punk gothic and trending toward heavier metal as they went on. This pick is mostly to pick up those peak years, but the stuff on either side is varied and frequently quite good in its own right and gives me a little variety if nothing else.

Now I’m down to some tough decisions. I missed out on the run on “hair bands”, but I also noted that my favorite band in (or at least near) the category got skipped over. I’m taking them now: Def Leppard.

I cut my teeth on these guys when I was a kid, but at the time, I didn’t quite realize how remarkable they were, particularly Hysteria, which charted 7 singles and stayed on the charts for three years. Along with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Van Halen they are one of only five rock bands to have sold two “Diamond” studio albums (10,000,000 sales) in the U.S. So I now have three of those five bands on my island. And I’ve got some more solid rock and roll.

Years active: 1977-present
Catalog: 9 studio albums, 1 rarities compilation, 1 live album, 1 cover album (11h)
Landmark songs: Bringin’ On The Heartbreak, Photograph, Love Bites, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Let’s Get Rocked
Songs I keep coming back to:

A lady who is internationally respected and one of the most unique voices in all of music. Of course, one of the best dancers in music as well. I love the international sound to her music..

Yeah. The "International Sound" of her songs is what I pay attention to as well... I'm surprised she didn't go in the run of female artists a few rounds ago.

The Cult pick was pretty good, and I'm surprised that Def Leppard fell so far. I don't think of them as a hair band, but more arena rock...which reminds me that there are a few in this genre (OK, both hair AND arena) that are left on the board.

I'm glad someone picked Def Leppard. I love Def Leppard but i just couldn't find room for them.

Sorry for the delay, never got a PM due to overnight server issues. Probably wouldn't have mattered anyway because I've been busy today.

What do you get when you combine Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden? My next pick :D:

Audioslave

They're comprised of Rage's musicians, with Chris Cornell as the frontman. Cornell is my favorite vocalist of all time so I needed him on my island. Even though they're mostly the same group, Audioslave's music is radically different than Rage's. I would've picked these guys sooner if I didn't have other genres to cover. That and they've only released 3 albums. But 3 solid (at worst) albums IMO. I'll take it.

Actually no, that would kind of be problematic -- be no way then for a skipped person to ever make there next pick on time.

On the other hand don't want to hold things up 24 hours for no reason.

Hmm...I have a solution! Dukes, get your *** back here! :p

Seems like unnecessarily complicating the issue to look for a new solution. I thought it had become common practice in these things that someone who disappears keeps getting skipped until they come back, at which point they can submit makeup picks for however many turns they missed (or, if it's more than a couple, however many da commish is willing to accept). It don't make me no nevermind, of course, since I'm not in the draft, but it seems silly to punish everyone else just because one person went MIA.

That is how I recalled the rule. Usually it was 3 picks.

Okay, for my 18th pick I need something to represent my dear and only daughter, and since I don't really want or need more country on my island, I'm choosing Jason Mraz.(hate away GGG)

watching her and her bf sing this to each other on her 16th birthday is something I will never forget. It was soo very sweet.
