I'm guessing my opinion on Muse is not welcome? :D

Gun Club I like that, I think they were off my radar and are worthy of revisiting as only a few songs really stand out in my mind (She's Like Heroin...) and I am probably more receptive to them now than I was the last time I checked them out.

Fire away, and apologies about earlier, bad day for me! I'm guessing Muse aren't "rocky" (for lack of a better word) enough for you?

Pick coming in a moment!

My pick:

Marvin Gaye

Bit suprised he's still on the board given his status as one of the best artists of all time, but happy to have him.

Many iconic songs, and a fantastic voice. One of the main Motown guys back in the day, and his tragic story is almost fitting for the power of his songs.

Maybe that's it, though I liked them better before I heard Unintended and thought they were more of a rock band with keys. Like Rookie the singer doesn't do it for me. And some of their rabid fans really turned me off. Oh and don't get me started on their song in Guitar Hero 3. :) I've said enough.

I do like the Marvin pick, but I'm not surprised with this drafting pool that he was still around. I think it was a good time to grab him though.

Faster than a PM (hovering and having writeups prepared saves time, i guess). Okay, time to change gears a little.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

All my fears awakening
I've let them back
All this flash before my eyes
I never had
Where's your consultation?
Now listen flies
"Walk my son, I've taught you well
You're on your way down"

1st Album: Take Them On, On Your Own
Favourite Album: Baby 81
Why I Started Listening: My list so far doesn't really show it, but I do listen to Rock. A lot actually. So it came kind of naturally that I would come across BRMC at some point and as far as pure Rock music goes, they are pretty much at the top of my list. Their records are all pretty much spotless, without any obvious weak songs or anything (something i sadly cannot say for most other rock acts i love) and they have some real highlights, too. And sometimes, I just really need that particular sound.

One instance of NSFW language in the song, therefore spoilers.

Oh no, not that incredibly stupid. Not even my favorite guilty pleasure band from my Boston days stupid (someone remind me and I'll reveal at the end of the draft and I guarantee at least one other person will admit to crushing on the singer). Just one I'm torn on. I won't hold this up too long.

Don't know anything about their fans to be honest, and I don't play Guitar Hero so I haven't been corrupted in that sense! I think their singer has an annoying head, but I don't have a problem with his voice.

I actually kind of liked his voice from the songs you posted and two more sort of randomly selected from YouTube. I really liked the first song (Uprising) which I have heard snippets of around - maybe commercials or sports events or something. Like PDX I wasn't so high on Unintended. They seem to have elements of Radiohead and elements of early Pink Floyd with a modern edge to them, and sometimes it comes off really well. Other times it didn't seem to come together, though there were interesting elements there. I'm on the fence, but to get me there, you've done something right.

And here I was, positive, positive I say, that he was going to be your next pick. ;)

Also, I would really, really, *really* make another pick right now. Currently listening to an artist/band I wanted to do more research on before picking and being blown away by what I hear. Crap.

Definitely give it a go. I really only posted "Unintended" as it's very different from their usual stuff, much softer and shows an alternate side to the band. It's not the type of music they're known for. Have a look at some of their other stuff and give it a good chance to grow on you. They're a really good band.

Ok, I'm doing it. I choose Tesla. Sacramento's hometown heroes. I can't resist. I'm sorry to whoever it is that throws me that elusive #1 vote every draft.

What's to say? They had a great twin guitar attack. Quality vocals. Good hooks. Unfairly miscategorized as a hair band after tours with the likes of bands I guess I will not name, just in case. Were they the best band of their genre? Hardly. But for those of us in Sacramento in the late 80s early 90s they were OUR band. And they worked hard at it too, always shouting out to Sacramento, shooting videos there (I'm fairly certain I am in like 3 frames during the guitar solo for the "Love Song" video). I'd see them all around town at the strangest places. Model airplane shops. Softball games. Kings games when the team was strictly a blue collar affair.

For me this was particularly meaningful as I spent my freshman year of HS in 88-89 in New Hampshire and just wasn't enjoying it, not making friends and generally pretty miserable until winter had just about wrapped up. I was on the wrestling team and pretty much would just go from school to school to get my butt kicked every single week. And I remember going down to the record store and Great Radio Controversy had come out during this time and just jamming out on those long bus rides. I guess "Hang Tough" was my personal soundtrack on those rides.

Its a bit more dated than some other hard rock/metal I was listening to then, and kind of cheesy looking back at it now but I've also found quite a few folks not from Sacramento also really loved this band. And its almost impossible for me now when I hear them on the radio (admittedly not often) to just crank it and sing along full throat.

But perhaps their great contribution was their Five Man Acoustical Jam which pretty much gave birth to the Unplugged Concert Series, at least as far as it pertained to heavy rock acts. They slowed down their originals and had a memorable cover of "Signs" among quite a few others.

Oh, and the last time I heard from them they were at the Save Our Kings rally.

compare original - doing this was groundbreaking stuff at the time

Good pick. Nice to see some Tesla love. I didn't have them on my list but I'd be glad to have them on any island I happened to be on. i still have all their stuff in my collection. Like you said, some of it hasn't dated that well, but some of it still sounds pretty good. i was always in the minority in that i thought and still do think that "Psychotic Supper" was their best album. Edison's Medicine and Song and Emotion still kick a$$.

seriously though... you'd of had to know me that year of boarding school. it was awkward to say the least. they did help get me through, lame as it sounds. funny thing is that most "bands that got me through" rough patches are all equally on the fringes of my musical tastes today.

There's only two other choices really, one of which I really absolutely can't stand in any fashion whatsoever and the other of which I like but nowhere near enough to pick. I'm going to guess G3 is the latter.

I actually really don't like being basically all by my lonesome with the hip-hop scene. One thing that's nice about competing with others for the same styles is that the high value picks end up getting taken so more sentimental picks that maybe don't add as much to the island can be taken without remorse because they're all that's left. So I'm sad that I'm avoiding some sentimental favorites because they only really had one album and taking very similar artists who simply add more good music to my island. This pick means I probably won't grab a couple of my true favorites, but my hoard of music will be better for it. Anyhoo... the next selection is:

Outkast

Just too many good songs that always end up on my playlist. Stankonia and The Love Below half of the double album in particular are full of good stuff.

I quite like Outkast. Enough to use a draft spot, no. But they move ahead of Dre in my little 4 artist rankings.

Great pick!! They were on my list later on. And don't worry, you are not alone - Lauryn Hill was a top 10 pick for me and Jay-Z was also on my list for later!
