Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

Alright, enough waiting around. Once again...I AM NOBONUS

With his 17th selection, NoBonus chooses:

Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (1965)

Who doesn't like a good old fashioned monster movie. Full of cheese, and gore, and cheesy gore. Action, comedy, screams of panic, and maybe even a bit of social commentary thrown in to boot.

I AM STILL NOBONUS!

With his 18th round selection, NoBonus is sticking with the "Monster Movie" genre, but staying with an old classic. The pick is in...and the winner is:

King Kong (1933)

Sigh... It's getting harder and harder to Sophie's choice my way through these last few picks. I had a write up almost finished for a movie I love, but at the last minute decided to take completely out of the running. And instead of the somewhat serious biopic/thriller I had at this slot, I'm going with guitar case rocket launchers and nekkid Salma Hayek.

Desperado (1995) -- Do I even need a write up after mentioning homicidal mariachis and the world's introduction to Ms. Hayek? Well, okay... the movie also features a score by Los Lobos and several great songs by Tito & Tarantula. And a bloody bar fight choreographed entirely to Link Wray's "Jack the Ripper."

Ok, there are literally like 4,837 ways I want to go with this pick but I think at least 4028 of those ways are safe until the next 2 rounds... SO I've FINALLY decided to pick my absolute favorite movie of all time..

A favorite of mine since I saw it as a kid. Funny. Classic John Candy. Feel-Good story. True story.

Cool Runnings

Nothing fancy about this pick. But I wouldn't even want to have any movies if I couldn't have this one.

Used to have that poster on my wall in college. Not because I loved the movie that much (although did like it). Just because I thought the pose/poster was that cool.

And yes the scene with Salma was cool too. :)

The Replacements (2000) PG-13

I will make no exaggerated claims of this film's merit except to say it is flat out fun. I know a lot of people who share my affection for this movie despite it being one of the most derivative films you are ever likely to see. We've all seen this movie a dozen times before -- it absolutely revels in its sports movie clichedom -- and it in fact goes so far as to pretty blatantly steal almost its entire structure from another movie which I cannot mention because it hasn't been taken. And yet somehow when you turn your inner snooty film critic off, its really hard not to like it. What it really is is Major League on a football field, and its as funny as any sports film made since that one. Everything is here from the underdog team full of goofy misfits, to the grizzled old coach, to the moment when they all come together, to the evil forces trying to hold them back (there is no room for shades of grey in a good sports movie, its all black and white), to the big game where they have to prove themselves worthy. But its all just...like I say fun. Its done right. Makes you laugh and like its characters. But here let me take a stab at merit: the football scenes, both practice and game, look more realistic, more like real football, than almost any other football movie I have seen. And Keanu Reeves, no joke, was so impressive as a QB that he actually was given a tryout by the Baltimore Ravens at the end of shooting. I didn't make that up. Apparently he had 70yd range with his arm.

P.S. Also, Brooke Langton has great chemistry with Keanu as one of the all time greatest must have been written by a male sports chick roles of all time. She's a hot head cheerleader (looks great in the skimpy attire) who drives crazily, is a football expert, owns and runs her own bar where she'll serve you free beer after closing, and hires strippers to fill out the cheerleading squad. Where can I find me one of those? :p

Annie Hall - 1977

Henkle's irksome interjection notwithstanding, I had been plotting to take one of either Annie Hall or Manhattan from the beginning. The only trouble was I couldn't quite decide which one I liked more and figured strategically (cowardly) as long as no one was going near Woody Allen movies, I could continue to lay low until someone made the choice for me.

So it was, with Cap snatching up Manhattan, I could guiltlessly pull the trigger on Allen's first "grown-up" comedy. Well La-Di-Da.

Don't take that to mean I'm disappointed at all. This is the smartest written romantic comedy, if not just plain comedy, I've ever seen. There is so much dialogue and so many scenes that became ingrained in American pop-culture, it's easy to forget they originated here. Everything from the anecdote about a lady complaining the food is terrible and "such small portions" to spiders the size of Buicks.

It also expertly bridges the gap between indepth realisms about sex and relationships and zany, hilarious absurdities.

Marshal McLuhan: I heard what you were saying. You know nothing of my work!...How you got to teach a course in anything is totally amazing.
Alvy Singer: Boy, if life were only like this.

OK, just got back from the trip.

My next pick is a movie that has fallen a lot more than I thought would - a value pick here I think.

Lethal Weapon

Just a fun buddy cop movie with Mel Gibson (playing crazy before he really went there) and Danny Glover.

Good choice. When I saw that on the list you sent me for while you were out of town, I almost head-slapped.

Pick coming pronto.

Only three picks left. I'll spend #18 on Evita (1996 - PG).

My island has a fair number of movies with great soundtracks - Blue, Manhattan, and The Fall just for starters. But I still didn't have anything that I can just sit down and sing along to for two hours - until now. Evita fills that role nicely, and while I'm not a major expert on the genre, I've never seen a musical (name your favorite) with a better libretto. In fact, if memory serves, Evita is one of only two films from my adulthood that I've seen in the theater twice on its first run. Plus I get to cover Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Pryce in one pick. How can I lose?

Below the spoiler, the first track from the film. It only took about two minutes into this song to sell me completely.

Edit: Don't know what the attached thumbnail is. Doesn't show up anywhere I can delete it. Huh.

Yep, good pick. Somehow never even had it on a list, although I have owned it for 20 years. As usual already had an overabudnance of splosions and shootemups already however.

There are only two Adam Sandler movies I enjoy watching. This one is the other one:

The Waterboy 1998

I'm not ashamed to admit it. I'll stop flipping the channels when I pass it by, much to the chagrin of the missus.

Having a hard time figuring out where to go here. I don't have many movies left on the list I made at the beginning, and many of them I like but seem too similar to the movies I already have on my island. So I'm going with something a little different. Even though I have a bit of romance on the island, this will add a bit more, plus some quirky English comedy. It's the gang of misfit friends that makes this one enjoyable to watch more than the stars themselves, but I don't mind Grant and Roberts here either...

Notting Hill (1999)

Now I'll grab an 80s punxploitation classic.

Suburbia - 1984
Following up on the seminal Decline of the Western Civilization documentary, Penelope Spheeris directed this fictional piece about punks in Southern California living in a squat house. Shot mostly using scene kids and not professional actors it features an early performance from Flea as well as live performances from notable punk and hardcore acts like TSOL, The Vandals and DI which gives it an edge over similar flicks. Lots of silly sequences of angry youth that seemed a lot more powerful almost 30 years ago but I still have to throw this in every so often just to remember this time in my life.

I've got a lot of dark/serious movies on my island, so time to lighten things up a little. Since I missed most of the comedies I wanted, I'm going with a big, fun, dumb (in a good way) action/thriller flick, Point Break.

I've always found this movie highly entertaining and very rewatchable. It also has a cool sort of zen/mystic quality that transcends the silliness of the plot.

It's got great action scenes, great stunts, and a perfect cast. I don't think any other actors besides Swayze and Reeves could have pulled it off quite as well. They were just perfect for their parts.

I actually just considered adding this to my list last night. An underrated action film, full of fun and extreme sports. Pick coming...

My island has lots of action, comedy, romance, and suspense, but it is completely void of an essential genre...THE WESTERN...Alright, while maybe not essential they are definitely fun, and very rewatchable. With my 18th pick, I select:

Maverick (1994)

You know what, DAMN. That should have been on my list. It absolutely should have. i even watched it in the last 2 months and it was still funny. Adn after Lowenherz took Pale Rider from me, I have been struggling tiryign to think of another Western I wanted to take that I did not take last time. this one should have been it. No excuses. Just blew it not thinking of it.
