Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

Larry89

Disgruntled Kings Fan
Well that was a brutal round for me I guess I picked the wrong movies at the wrong time

but in any case I will select

Full Metal Jacket 1987 R

Might as well get the last of the good war movies while they are there right?

an excellent Kubrick movie, in fact my favorite war movie.

and

since I lost out on my favorite horror the thing.. I guess I will just have to pick my back up..

The Fly 1986 R

A brilliant but eccentric scientist begins to transform into a giant man/fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong....

Alrighty, I'm about to draft another one that's lasted surprisingly late. It's not my favourite movie, but I like it and I'll happily have it on my island. I think my other desired movies are much more likely to be available later than this one.

Forrest Gump

I'll keep it short as most people have probably seen this one also. Didn't think I'd be taking back-to-back Hanks movies.

And man, another one I've never heard of before. Its an education I tell ya.
I'm probably the only person who would have taken it, but I think it's a really good movie, and I can watch it over and over again, literally. But considering some of the titles that have gone in the past couple rounds, I really didn't want to keep passing on it, just for fear someone else likes it. So there. What's done is done.

I think it's weird that this sequel has gone, but this one, which I thought was way, waaay better, hasn't.... But I'm not complaining. I think it's time for me to grab a good old fashioned popcorn flick, and I'm assuming I have a nice surround sound system on my tropical island. And with no neighbors to complain, I'll turn the sub up nice and loud for this one.

This was the first Marvel-produced comic book film, and I think it's revolutionary in a way, from the story telling to the plot to the character development. Plus, the actors all fit incredibly well with one another, and even the auxiliary players just nailed their roles. I checked the list twice to make sure I didn't miss it. With no further ado...

With the 131st pick in the 2011 TDOS Tropical Island Video Vault Draft, Superman's Super Movie Lineup selects:
Iron Man (2008), directed by Jon Favreau

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once.

I'm not sure what will be safe here so I reorganized my list a bit. With The Prestige gone, I expected this film to go a few rounds ago and will gladly add it to my island collection. With my 9th selection, I choose:

The Illusionist (2006)

I agree on that. Actually I think its the best superhero movie I have seen. The sequel was a major let down for me.
I had the first last time. I actually enjoy the sequel more. I think, like Alien, Terminator, and other series, sometimes the sequel can jump right into a story (and more action) without having to establish the history, characters, etc.. As long as the story is good, it works. And IM2 has a story that works that way. Iron Man is like that for me as well - the first one was a little slow (very good, but a bit slow) and I like the bad guy in 2 better. I also like the start of the tie-in to Avengers and Black Widow. Eh, different strokes and all that.

And remember, to me this is all about rewatchability. I occasionally rewatched Iron Man. Iron Man 2, much more often. Same with other movies I am picking. Some movies I have seen selcted are good/great movies (say, Forrest Gump) but I wouldn't put them on to watch again. One time shot is fine. So I am not selecting those (good to great movies sitting on my shelf collecting dust). I am selecting those movies I would watch over and over. IM2 beats IM in my book for that.

That's a good pick. I would have taken it in a few rounds were it available but that was always unlikely.

Man it's getting tough to pick. I've got a list of about 25 films that i want about equally and it's hard to guess what ones may get picked by someone else. After some thought, I've decided to go with, Sling Blade. Billy Bob Thornton is an underrated actor in my opinion and he gives a great performance here. One thing i think that helps make this film so rewatchable for me is it's versatility. It functions great as a drama but it's also full of a lot of top notch comic relief.

I liked that one considerably more than The Prestige. Paul Giamatti in particular was briliant.

Eh, I still think IM2 pretty much blew :p (BW was hot tho). But while we obviously have different tastes clearly I understand that. While my list may have limited appeal they are all movies I've watched dozens of times too. There are maybe a couple of lists that read like AFI best of lists and while they are all great films they are the ones you put on the shelf to impress your friends about how cultured you are before you throw on a big splodey flick.

For the most part this should round out my comedy-horror collection, though I reserve the right to re-visit if my list gets thinned out.

Army of Darkness - 1992
The third and final(?) installment in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series is definitely far heavier on the comedy than the horror but still a fun romp of Ash vs. the Deadites. Now transported through time into a medieval setting it will fill a nice little niche on my island which will likely otherwise be free of any castle sieges. Bruce Campbell is really at his peak here, I don't think he has ever been better, delivering all the one liners as only he can along with still being a capable leading male. Rumors are he was considered as Superman at one point, and this would show why.

This film may have the honor of being one of the most re-released films in DVD history. Constant limited editions mixing the theatrical with the TV cut (which added 8 minutes to fill a 2 hour slot) and the director's cut (15 mins added) plus the "happy" S-Mart ending vs. the downer apocalypse ending. So I'll make sure to pack one of the editions that has 'em all (the Boomstick edition DVD fits this bill and is what I presently have on my shelf as the last Blu-Ray release was subpar).
Notable quotes in the spoiler section.

The time is right for this pick:

If I'm the only one who had this on his list, so be it. If not, then muahahahaha!!!11!!one!1

I'm not making the same mistake as the last round.

For whatever reason it was completely off my radar despite the fact its perfect for my island. Reminder I need to pick up a copy at some point. Not yet available on blu-ray so I guess I'll be waiting. Though I hear they have an HD copy in the basement of the Alamo.

"Have you tried talking to a corpse? It's boring."

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Reasons to watch this quirky horror/comedy over and over again:
-Vintage special effects (e.g.: the transformation)
-Hilarious scenes (e.g.: David tries to get arrested in what I believe is Trafalgar Square)
-Jenny Agutter is like the most beautiful thing ever

Not sure if Captain Factorial is back yet, but here was his first pick he sent to me:

Up (2009 - PG)

A recent film, but an instant classic, right from the opening scene. I thought it would be long gone, but it's time to snatch it up.

And for my pick:

I think, given the picks I have so far, the last thing I would need is a Viking and dragon action movie. But this one is a bit different.....

How to Train Your Dragon

A funny, excellent animated feature.

Just purchased it on Amazon.com last night for less than $13 for the BluRay and DVD combo pack, if anyone else is also interested in picking it up. ;)

Like Up, a recent animated feature that I didn't see falling this far. A great animated flick.

pm sent.

My son loves this movie - I do as well. We've seen it quite a few times.

HtTYD scares my son so I don't get to watch it. First time I sorta fell asleep which probably didn't help his experience... oh boy.

The Lady Eve - 1941

Barbara Stanwyck ... wow.

She absolutely makes this movie, so much so, it's hard to believe she was primarily known for dramatic roles prior to this. Her character of Jean - a street-wise con artist who conveniently falls for her mark - is the type of endearing and complex female lead modern rom-coms still have trouble capturing 70 years later.

alright, so the reason I left Saving Private Ryan out there to dangle round after round was because I always had this one in mind to fill that role, and personally think its probably got more long term rewatchability:

Black Hawk Down (2001) R

A "pure" war film, intentionally created by its director (Ridley Scott) without the now standard overt anti-war message that we have come to expect (although its hardly pro-war -- anybody watching the action here and concluding anything other than war is hell would have to be a psychopath...or my idiot cousin), I think on the pure rewatchability or entertainment levels its as good as any war movie ever made. A war movie as intense action flick rather than meditation on the evils of man, the intensity is immersive precisely because the movie never stops to have one of those philosophical interludes about the meaning of it all -- this is the story of a (real life) battle, not the story of war itself. The meaning of it all is that this small group of guys is in real trouble, trapped in a hostile city and surrounded by thousands of armed assailants, and things keep going from bad to worse. The fact that its fairly closely based on actual events just adds an extra punch. There's maybe 15-20 minutes just to set location and characters (which mostly blur), and then just as it was that day/night in Mogadishu, its a desperate non-stop firefight for the next two hours.

Still so many ways to go in this thing.. and I've yet to pick my favorite all time movie. Go figure. This next one is probably one of the most suspenseful movies of all time. One of the most creative as well.

Very surprised that Se7en lasted this long. Good pick.

As for Black Hawk Down, I have it on DVD but only watched it once. I thought it was a decent flick but cliched at times. I must give it another watch, it's a while since I've watched it and may be better on second viewing. Personally I wouldn't have it on the level of Saving Private Ryan, but I would say that.

After a bit of a wild run, the draft has kind of hit a stride again. I've scratched more picks off my list over the last ten picks than I did in the previous three rounds. And with that, I'll shut my mouth.

Warhawk - Thanks for taking pick duty for me! I just got back in town and so I should now be able to make all my picks within a reasonable time frame.

And I'm impressed - what a great movie you picked for me!

Great movie. Was at the back of my list as a "think about it at the end" flick. I didn't really think anybody else would jump at it but obviously this is not the first time I've been surprised in this draft.
Oh Cap. You're my only fan. :p

BTW, I just checked out the "Love Conquers All" version of Brazil and, um, yuck.
