How did you become a Kings fan?

#1
All my buddies are Blazer fans and last night after the game everyone one of them told me how impressed they were with Tyreke and you should hear some of things the Portland coaches and media have said if you haven't heard them yet. Truly is a special player.
The quotes that I read from Nate McMillan said that Nate thought Tyreke was a very special player. He said that Tyreke has some Magic Johnson in him.

As someone who grew up a Lakers fan, yes that's right Kings fans in the 80's I grew up a lakers fan during the showtime era. I converted to the Kings Nation in the early to mid 90's. I have very vivid memories of Magic Johnson as still one of my favorite players of all time. And when Nate made that comparison.....I can completely see it now and agree; and that sends shivers down my spine (in a good way).

How can one convert or change teams? If you grow up a fan of a team, the only way i can see not staying with them if it was like the Oilers or Colts that left an area and became an entirely ne team. The Titans and the Ravens are NOT the oilers or the Colts.

I could not change teams even if I wanted to. By the way, i grew up a Sixers fan (still am) but I was a kid during the Showtime Lakers, and I LOVE Magic. As a 20 something, I shed tears when he announced he was HIV positive.

It's easy. I moved to Sacramento, I started losing respect for the Lakers in the early to mid 90's. I didn't like some decisions that were being made, and I lived in a different geographic area. I figured, why not give the Kings a shot and root for the local team.

Likewise. I moved to Sac in 2001 and was a lifelong Lakers fan. I resisted for years but eventually caved to the Kings. Now I'm a STH. It's weird now too. I remember being thrilled Horry hit that shot and now, despite loving it at the time, the memory has become a painful one.

I dont know what that is like. I have been a cowboys fan since i was 6 and i live near Modesto. So even if I moved to Candelstick park itslef, i could not be a niners fan.

I am still a Sixers fan, but I pay closer attention to the Kings as I am much closer to them, but when the two teams play, I dont choose to root for the sixers, I just do. I cant help it.

You're a fan of well-established teams with long histories. Most Kings fans were first fans of other teams for the simple reason there wasn't a local team so if they truly enjoyed a sport they had to pick a different team.

The Kings moved into our area in 1985, and that's when a lot of NBA fans got their first chance to see a local team. (The Warriors never counted for me or any of the NBA fans I knew).

It was as much about the experience itself as it was about the team. As time passed, it became a part of a lot of our lives - and it's contagious.

It's about the style of play and the camaraderie of the players, when things are as they're supposed to be. That's why the Kings draw fans from all over the world.

As far as transplanted Laker fans go, I think a lot of them are won over because of the excitement of Arco, the exhilaration of sharing something that much fun with 17,000 others, etc.

You picked the Cowboys for a variety of reasons. If a NEW NFL franchise came to Modesto, would you still be a Cowboys fan?

I guess all I'm really trying to say is that people become team fans for a variety of different reasons. In fact, I think we had a thread about it some years ago ... and for that reason, I'm going to split this discussion out into its own thread.

I watched a Kings vs. Bulls game at arco, and Rodman sat on Mitch Richmond during a Kings fast break to keep the Kings from going ahead late in the game.

That was the moment I became a fan, I'm not really sure why though...

I was at that same game. It was during the Bulls' 72 win season and I remember thinking you could see the difference in attitude toward the situation; Mitch was taking every minute of the game seriously fighting just to keep the Kings in the game for an improbable upset. The Bulls though were acting like the game itself was just a formality before they would be awarded their customary win, so they might as well have some fun while they waited for it to get over with.

I've hoped ever since that I could cheer for a Kings team that was that confident.

For me it started after seeing some nba highlights with that play in it. Before seeing that play I knew nothing about sacramento.
The next time I got the chance to watch a full game of the kings, which was almost impossible here in Belgium, I was hooked.

Do all of the fans who were die-hards BEFORE the glory years have the same level of respect for fans who came during our run at the top?
Do you realize that the way you asked that question the only possible answer is "no"? :)

I think for most it is a case by case basis.

What difference would it make?

I was a card-carrying Laker Hater ever since Kobe and Shaq teamed up, and the Kings entered my consciousness during the infamous 2001-2002 playoffs. I got sucked in while watching them play that series, then I found this Kingsfans board in 2004 which helped solidify my fandom :)

I can't speak for all of us, but I can tell you my feelings. We were ALL new to the Kings once; some of us were new in 1985, some were new in 1999, and some are new in 2009. I don't see that it makes any difference. (The only possible exception being new fans who don't understand that those of us who have been here forever have been through the highs and lows and might have a little more insight in some regards.)

At least for me, I enjoy talking to the other die-hards who were around before the glory years about our terrible teams, the packed houses at arco, and the RISE to glory.

It's fun for me to reminisce/comiserate on the times of Olden Polyneice, Causwell, Billy Owens, Hurley, Tyus Edny, Walt Williams, Mitch, Michael "The Animal" Smith, Brian Grant, Tisdale, Spud, The L-Train, Sarunas Marculonas (spelling? haha), etc. Although they were all pretty awful, I still loved those teams. And I'm only 22.

Hell, I rememeber tellnig my parents I was "going to sleep" when I was 8 years old on school nights and listening to Napier call the games on my old walkman radio in my bed. I would listen to Sportsline when it was just Grant and "Wheels After Work" with Brian Wheeler (was that his name?). Also, let's not forget about the Sports Dudes!

For reasons I cannot understand, reading that sentence brought Rupe the Hoop to mind... And for that, I will never forgive you.

I have always lived in Nor Cal... guess I am a local... when the Kings started playing in Sacramento when I was a kid, I went to tons of games with my family and friends. My mom even used to listen on the radio to the games as well on an old transistor radio... memories I will never forget. I am a 25 year Kings fan.

When the team moved here, LaSalle Thompson bought his house two doors down from my house. I was hooked. A real life pro ball player lived in my hood! I was only 7 but I still understood. And he was hella cool too, got some passes for us to go in the tunnel after games to meet players (Kareem, Magic, Jordan, Barkley, Terry Cummigs.....), he had Kings players over at his house from time to time. Pressley bought the house after Tank was traded. I liked the Lakers but the Kings were my team. I lost respect for the Lakers when they got Van Exel. Fromt that point on it was nothing but Kings.

HAHAHAHA!!! Wow I totally forgot about that! What was it about those Kings teams back then that kept Arco packed? Was it just the fact that the fan base hadn't gotten "spoiled" yet by having a legit GOOD team in the league? That's my theory.

I don't think the real fans became spoiled so much as some "fans" were atually posers coming to Arco pretending to be fans. They weren't there for the game...they were there because the team was elite, they were always in the news and it was "the place to be." I can't begin to count the number of times I saw people in the most expensive seats strutting back and forth in front of the cameras, just waiting for their 15 minutes of fame. As the ticket prices rose, more and more fans were priced out of the market. Then, when the team quit being "hot" the pretend fans left and a lot of the real fans couldn't afford to return.

At least now, the people who put their money on the line to go to the games are there for the right reasons but the cynic in me says it won't be long before we have to look at the Paris Hiltons once again.

Born and raised in Sacto, and have lived in both Sacto and the Bay Area ever since. I was also born and raised a 49er fan. When the A's came to Oakland, I became an A's fan, but when the designated hitter rule came to the American League, I switched to the Giants.

Never was a Warriors fan for some reason.

When the Kings came to Sacto, I became a fan by default. I'm basically a geographical fan, but I've never moved to someplace else so I don't know what that would be like. I'd probably keep my hometown loyalties just because the've been a part of me for so long. If the Kings moved, or the 49ers or Giants, I'd probably follow for a short time and then just let them go. The hometown pride thing is a big part of it for me.

Because I always hated the Rams (in LA) and the Dodgers, it came naturally to hate the Lakers every bit as much. It's a "NorCal finds SoCal disgusting" thing I grew up with.

I didn't follow the Kings all that closely early on because I lived in the Bay Area and there was just too much else going on in my life. However, when Webber came and we started something special, I had to be a part of it and bought season tickets. My daughter and I went to every home game, and even to a few away games.

Despite the end of that era, I can't get the Kings out of my system. Even with last years horrific record, the lowest of the low, I still watched every game.

Now, the hope starts anew.
