Statement as of 3:30 AM PST on December 05, 2009


... Winter Storm Watch in effect from Sunday evening through
Monday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a Winter
Storm Watch for heavy snow... which is in effect from Sunday
evening through Monday afternoon for the west slopes of the
northern Sierra Nevada... western Plumas County and the Lassen park
area... the foothills of the northern Sierra Nevada and motherlode.

* Timing: snow is expected to begin Sunday evening... become heavy
overnight and continue Monday before tapering off by Monday
evening.

* Snow level: ranging from 1500 feet near Redding to 2500 feet
north of Yosemite early Sunday evening... lowering to around 1000
to 2000 feet on Monday.

* Main impact: heavy snow will be likely Sunday night and Monday.
Storm total snowfall accumulation of 5 to 10 inches will be
possible in the foothills with up to 2 feet or more possible at
the higher elevations of northern Sierra. Severe winter driving
conditions will be likely.

* Other impacts: southwest wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph will result
in areas of blowing and drifting snow with near zero visibility
at times.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.

the colder foothill locations to the upper 20s to lower 30s
throughout the Central Valley.

Temperatures Tuesday morning are expected to be colder and range
from the lower 20s for the colder foothill locations to the mid
to upper 20s for most valley locations.

* Impacts: sensitive vegetation may be harmed. Pets and livestock
that may be sensitive to the cold should be bought into protective
areas.

* Locally there exist the potential for some locations to experience
problems with waterlines.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A frost advisory means that sensitive outdoor plants may be
killed if left uncovered.

A hard freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible
for a longer duration. These conditions could kill sensitive crops
and other sensitive vegetation.

Snow

If memory serves, the last time the Sacramento area had significant snow was the year the Kings came to Sacramento - 1985.

On November 11, 1985 (my wife's birthday) there was a dusting of snow that melted away by noon. Last time I had snow in my yard.

My favorite Sacramento snow day was in December 1972. That was the coldest winter I can remember. I was a senior at Sac State and for days, puddles stayed frozen all day.

Anyway, I took my high-school-age brother over to campus to watch the Christmas tree lighting. They lit up the tree, the school choir started siging....and snow started to fall quite heavily. It didn't really stick for long, but it was perfect!

Well that storm was fun...was without power for ~15 hours, which is no big deal, because I was shoveling snow for a good 4 hours of that. Oh well, I've never seen that much snow here before (2 feet), and I doubt I will again.

And yet, oddly enough, we only got about 4 inches of the stuff here. Of course, I know we'll get a lot more before too much longer. Glad we could share the wealth with those of you at the lower elevations.

Well, I like snow, but I would have been glad to give you 10-12 of those inches.... It seemed like this storm was very narrow, latitudinally, only seriously impacting a few counties North to South. There are still thousands without power here in El Dorado county, and I know a lot of those newer houses don't have wood stoves, only central heating (which goes out with electricity). With lows dipping into the low 20's, I really feel for those people. Good thing they have warming shelters set up.

I live at the southern edge of Yuba City. Most of Yuba city was dry, so it's apparent the storm was mainly to the South of us.

My streets were wet in the AM, but if there was any falling snow here over night (which I doubt), I slept through it or it didn't stick around long. I was actually disappointed. I would like to at least have seen snow falling.

I was once in Terra Houte, IN back in Jan 1994 on the way to the east coast and they were having some record cold, IIRC. Something like -30 or -40 with wind chill. Yeah, freaking cold is right.

Coldest I've ever been in is 19, and that's as close as I need to be to FREAKING COLD. I certainly have no interest in -12. That's just nuts.

Just wondering. Are the League Pass announcers for the Kings games always Grant and Jerry? Or is it just for home games or what? I'm thinking about switching to Dish Network which doesn't have comcast sports net so I would be getting League Pass. I don't want to listen to others teams announcers you know.
