SF 49ers: 2009-2010

I thought this picture at Sacbee.com was hilarious.

Glad to finally have Crabtree on board, I've read alot of things about him and he seems to be a pretty good guy despite this holdout mess. I tend to blame the agent more in these types of situations...For now Crabtree just needs to work his tail off, have a team attitude, and I think most fans will forgive and forget.

I tend to agree ... especially about the agent part. Now that he's part of our team, I wish him all the best in the world. There's a lot to be excited about already this year - Patrick Willis ROCKS!!! - and I wouldn't mind adding Crabtree to that list.

GO NINERS!!!!

What agent are you guys talking about... Crabtree was advised this whole time by his uncle and Deion ****ing Sanders. He was the one who convinced him to hold out, then did a 180 and decided to cash in while he still could. By the way, Deion sent the Hammer to "help" negotiate the deal. Crabtree decided NOT TO TAKE 16 MILLION GUARANTEED BEFORE HE EVER CAUGHT A BALL AT THE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL. No real fan will forgive and forget. This "kid", and i use the term carefully because you would have to be one to be that much of a damn idiot, held his team ransom. I hope he flames out and serves as a shining example to all the other student athletes that believe they are entintled to something because of a random number they get drafted at. And hey, even if he does, he's got 16 ****ing million dollars. Idiot.

Hey, carry that hate all you like. But don't EVER presume that you're a "REAL FAN" and the rest of us who have been following the 49ers are somehow less than you because we're getting past this.

The bottom line is that Michael Crabtree has now signed with the 49ers, from most reports he's anxious to make up lost time and be a productive member of our team.

The real villain in this piece is the NFL itself, IMHO. If they had a rookie pay scale similar to what the NBA employs NONE of this would have happened. I would much rather see rookies earn a set amount during the first few years and then, once they're proven to have worth, let them negotiate a huge contract to last them their entire post-NFL lives.

The 49ers also received positive feedback from former Texas Tech basketball coach Bobby Knight, who recruited Crabtree to play basketball. Knight told them he thought Crabtree had the toughness and drive to play in the NBA.

It's hard to think of two other sports figures who tolerate fools less than Singletary and Knight. Crabtree passed muster with both.
But then again, Knight also recruited Isiah Thomas, so you can't say his record of recruiting "non-fools" is perfect.

I'm staying optimistic about Crabtree, but I'll weight until this season's over to pass judgment on his character.

Take a deep breath man. It will all be alright.

A couple quick points regarding your comment. It makes it really hard to take you seriously when you curse that much, use caps, and invoke the No True Scotsman (real fan) fallacy.

Michael Crabtree is a very young man with a lot of people whispering into his ear. He was doing what he thought was right. What's important is that he and the 49ers were able to make a deal that was acceptable to both sides. He is saying all the right things right now. His teammates and coaches understand and want him to be here. I'd say give the guy a chance and see what happens.

Fans found it in their hearts to forgive Emmitt Smith, Philip Rivers, Eric Dickerson, Bo Jackson, Cornelius Bennett, etc and seemingly forget John Elway and Eli Manning both pulled a Steve Francis on the Colts and Chargers respectively.

It's business. I think we can let this slide.

And Crabtree's agent, whom you dismissed as having nothing to do with this decision, is Eugene Parker, ranked in the top 50 most influential African-Americans in all of sports and just so happened to have represented (among many others) the afore mentioned Emmitt Smith.

I'm familiar with Eugene Parker, which is why I was confused as to why this went so far. And I didn't say he had nothing to do with the decision, I'm just puzzled as to why Deion and the Hammer were just as involved. He could have represented Jesus Christ for all I care, what happened was ridiculous

CDiddy, not sure what my using caps and cursing has anything to do with my point - i was angry and wrote in the heat of the thought. This was Crabtree's decision to make. It does not matter who was whispering in his ear. According to his coach, Crabtree was an independent young man who made his decisions for himself. All he looked like was a selfish idiot who wanted to be paid based on what he thought of himself.

Shark avatar - you did the same thing i did... lump people together. some fans forgot and forgave, others didn't. I'm still sickened by what Eli did, but I can't fault his contract because he performed on the field. Was he worth it? No - but he earned it with his play. All Crabtree has done is said that he values his money more than his teammates. he was not lowballed on his contract.

VF - I agree about the NFL, and again, I made a mistake by lumping in people together, but please don't point me out for calling you a "fake fan". I did not name names or use the words "you" "him" or "her" I was speaking in general and in anger, so I apologize if it came across as personal.

basically... sorry for sounding asinine. bottom line - this guy who wants to play a grown's man game and be paid like a grown man has decided that he would rather act like a kid and hide behind suggestions - suggestions that any of us (hopefully) would find idiotic. If someone in your ear whispered not to take 16 million because they believe you could get 4 more if you sat out one year, what would you do? throw in the fact that he would get 16 million whether he catches 1 pass or 1000 next year, sprinkle in the fact that most people in this country now are having trouble paying rent, and voila! that's all I need to hate this guy, I don't care what he's saying now, because he's saying it with 16 million in his pocket.

also... on ESPN there was a story about how the 49ers were planning to utilize Crabtree exclusively in the slot because, wait for it!... he only ran 2 different routes in college.

.... cue gasping! will try to post link...

I understand the heat of the moment thing, but my point is still valid. Using fallacious arguments, caps, and cursing detracts from the point you were trying to make. How you say it is just as important (sometimes moreso) as what you say.

But I digress...

Regarding:

If I was a highly successful collegiate athlete surrounded by successful NFL veteran mentors and an agent with a track record of getting his clients paid, going into a multi billion dollar industry, I would want to make sure I was getting the right value for my abilities as well.

Sure, as a fan, I would of preferred that he took the original $20 million, came into camp, and got on the field, but I'm not going to hate a kid who is trying to get the most of his situation. I feel that his performance will show who made the right decision.

This is regarding a quote Jimmy Raye made. He indicated that he watched the highlight reel and observed Crabtree running basically two routes, the hitch and the go. Raye also indicated that he has not studied Crabtree as a receiver. I think this is a non-story personally. Anyone can go to YouTube and look up Crabtree. I'm sure you'll see more than two routes.

This is great fodder if you already don't like Crabtree and just want to put him down.

not sure if this was directed at me directly, but i posted that because I thought it was intriguing. personally, I would find it hillarious if it was true but nowhere did I say it was or it wasn't. was still trying to find link when you posted this. i don't hate him as a person. i think he's selfish and an idiot, but I don't hate him or his talent. when you can find me saying something like that, you can use that smiley face. if it was not directed at me, i apologise. again, I hate his situation, not him as a person.

regarding your post stated above. I have to reiterate I did not use profanity at anybody, it was an act of anger. If you are willing to make the admission that you have never done so, I will willingly apologize for subjecting you to it. otherwise, I acted like a normal human being trying to get something off his chest. It's a message board, not a church.

Crabtree got paid based on the slotting system like every single player in this draft, and drafts past. Crabtree's advisors are, by all accounts, money grubbing idiots. I have to again, say, that Crabtree's deal was more than fair. He held out because HE thought that HE was worth more money. It is a selfish act, done by a person who could have made his own decisions, but chose to let those other people who knew "better" do so. Not sure why I have to keep beating a dead horse here, but his deal was fair. That wonderful agent of his made Crabtree look like an idiot in this situation.

I'm just glad we can finally see if this kid has a great future ahead or not, he may have an entorouge but hopfully he won't turn out to be a T.O. or Neon Deion.

What happened?

I dunno if it makes me a bad fan but I was done at half time :/
Caught an interception near the 49ers 20 yard line and headed the other direction. After about 10 yards (with 70 more to go and mostly empty space in front of him) he put one hand behind his head to do a little bit of showboating. He got caught from behind about five yards later by the receiver he was covering and got stripped of the ball. The Falcons recovered and got a fresh first down and went on to score on the drive.

...

This game is really a reminder that Singletary can't turn around a team just like that. His timeout to talk to the team when they were playing poorly backfired this time. They gave up a touchdown on the next play and could have used that time out later to challenge a bad call on a fumble. (I'm not saying it was a bad decision, just that motivation like that doesn't always work wonders.) I'm a little concerned that his style will grate on the players and they'll have trouble finishing the season strong or start tuning him out within a season or two. We'll have to see what happens.

Yeah didn't need to take that timeout but I can't blame him as much as coffee when he's sittin on the bench when he should of been out there but didn't know so we had to burn our second time out...young fella has to have his head in the game.

It was just ugly and shouldn't of been...feels like players were already on their bye week.

What in the hell was Bly thinking? You're getting your arse handed to you on your field 31-10 and you make a big interception (maybe a critical game changing break) with wide-open field ahead of you for sure TD or very long return. You decide to put your hand up in a look how cute I am pose or some stupid pseudo-Heisman B.S. only to slow up and get tackled, then worse fumble back to Atlanta! One of the worst displays of utter nonsense on the field I've ever seen by a veteran player in the NFL - ever!

I can't feel too upset with Coffee. It sure looked like we had the touchdown. Didn't think any of the defenders would have been able to catch Morgan, which is what I'm sure Coffee thought as he headed to the bench...

Bly, on the other hand, is a patented idiot in the mold of Terrell Owens. The game was most likely out of reach anyway at that point but the whole idea of him showboating to the crowd was pathetic.

I've been holding my breath for a game like this. We've been playing way over our heads against some pretty soft opposition and it finally came back and bit us in the posterior. I think the bye week will be a good opportunity for the team to really take a close look at what they've been doing right and what they've been doing wrong.

And as an aside, was Vernon Davis the victim of some kind of time distortion or something? He appeared to be out of synch with Hill the whole game, almost as though he'd forgotten what pass routes were.

It seemed Atlanta blitzed a lot, and Hill threw the quick pass several times to his favorite receiver to get rid of it. Davis apparently didn't make the same read continued on his normal route.

The offense looked a lot like it has in the rest of the games, they just didn't have the same defensive support this time. :|

Dre Bly needs to be benched after that ****. What a clown.
This type of behavior, and this type of player is why I've lost a lot of interest in football lately. The Deion Sanders syndrome. All about the self and not the team. Football is a team game. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I think showboating players like Bly make the game less enjoyable.

I was really trying to get back my interest in the 49ers this year, and now I'm feeling if Singletary doesn't crack down hard on this clown, I'm just going to turn away.

Give Singletary some time. I think he's going to be the best coach since Walsh. And don't worry, Singletary will punish him.

The good thing about Singletary is he KNOWS the game, he knows players and he knows how to deal with them. I am very glad he's the coach and I have no doubt at all that Bly will be dealt with appropraitely - and not necessarily in the public eye.

Well I guess during his press conference this morning Sing had Bly come out and apologize =o

Or he wanted to come out himself, coach said he felt bad and apologized to about everyone on the team.

you can watch the replay and such on 49ers.com

interesting.

Just pure, unadulterated showboating. Unforgivable.

It's not even like he was just excited and put the ball out in front of him in celebration. He's dancing and carryin' on and junk, and hasn't even scored yet! And it cost his team points and possession? Incredible. Now, the game is likely over at the point, anyway, given the fact that the Niners offense probably wouldn't have been able to close a 14 point gap without some huge breaks going there way, but still. Your good play isn't just marginalized, it's completely erased because you wanted to be Prime Time. And of all people, the veteran, not a silly 23 year old, but the 32 year old, seasoned veteran. Just ... wow.

I was at the game. I was being obnoxious until I realized that I was being like a Lakers fan. All I can say though, is Roddy White better pay Dr Bly some money for giving him the franchise record.

We always blitz. We have one of the more effective pass rushes in the league with Bierman and Abraham, and if we can get up on a team and make them throw the ball, it just becomes really tough to execute. Especially for a guy like Hill.
