Rebel In Disguise - Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers - 1993

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joy_and_Blues

I have been DJing reggae dancehall recently and it it pretty amazing how far ahead of its time this song actually is.

Is it me, or does it seem like youtube has stiffened up? No studio versions of this are available which pisses me off because I know that next to none of you are familiar with this tune. As I have eluded to above, the studio version lays down a progressive beat with a nice groove.

Whatevs, here is a link to a live version.

In Bloom - Nirvana - 90's

So fully half my 90's choices are Seattle music (i don't think my eighth will be) - and frankly I think that is about the right ratio. As far as I'm concerned the pop grunge scene saved radio in the 90s (I'm glad they all sold out, took the money, and made it popular).

Great video of Kurt acting like a rock star.

My next selection is She Talks To Angels by The Black Crowes. Although recorded in 1989, it was first released on their debut album Shake Your Money Maker in January of 1990. (Allmusic.com agrees)

I'm going to a bit of length to establish '90s not so much because it matters, but because of the video I'm going to link, which incorrectly identifies it as a 1989 release. In fact, the video itself is...horrible. It's a lipsync video "cover" whose only merit is that it's the only full-length album version of the song I can find on YouTube. (The music is original, whatever the bug in the lower left of the video says.)

Basically, the guitar work on this song is just so impeccable that I can't stomach the idea of including anything but the full, original version. (Especially if you're like me and only click on the YouTubes of songs you don't know...) So I'm linking good audio with bad video. Nobody said this was an iPod video draft, right? ;)

This was on my draft board, in the 90's column. Great song and I don't even mind the video so much - the kid's doing a project - not too bad a job. Good pick.

My seventh pick is:

Shining Star - Earth, Wind and Fire: That's the Way of the World (1975)

However, since I could not find a satisfactory copy of the studio version on youtube, and I may be the only person participating in this draft who does not like live music, there will be no link to the song here.

If anyone does not know this song off the top of their head, they really should check it out. I am going to pull out my box set and listen for good measure.

That is seriously a shame about not liking live music, I honestly cannot imagine. How many concerts have you been to? From what I have heard, they still put on a good show as of several years ago.

I don't do concerts; large groups of people in close quarters make me uncomfortable.

You are not alone there. I posted the Outkast live performance more out of necessity, I know it's terrible.

I always feel like the band/group/performer thinks you have an obligation to enjoy them at a live show, but most of the time they suck. All the concerts I've been to have felt like a waste of money.

Edit: I like live Jazz and the Blues.

wow some of the most fun and memorable times of my life have been at concerts. far more often than not I leave a concert saying "I should do this more often".

different strokes I guess.

Okay. Bear with me as I am on my cell... This was a hard pick until I remembered this song. This is an all-time favorite for me and from one of my favorite bands. I select

Train in Vain (Stand by me) by The Clash
from the album London Calling from 1979.

DREAMS - The Cranberries (1993)

[yt=Dreams - The Cranberries]u9AE8QQfx_E[/yt]

Had to have me some Cranberries at some point...last year I picked Linger. I loved the Cranberries in college....they sounded like nothing else I had heard before. Definitely moody like much of the grunge scene at the time, but still different.

You better watch it! You got me in the TV show draft with The Muppets, you better not take what I think you might be taking!!!! :p
Hmmm.... You do draft before me again there. I will leave it on the board if you "AHEM" agree to a simple request ;)...

(deal with the devil???)

Edit: I think I'll give KG4 a reprieve out of the kindness of my heart. May the chips fall where they will. I gotta go somewhere (you were saved by my wife).

So I was listening to my Ipod at work. I was blasting it all over the warehouse with my big ol' Ipod stereo, and my boss comes up to me and asks: "what the he** kind of music do you listen to anyway?" I told him the Blues, then turned it to my B.B. King playlist for the rest of the day. Good times.

I am so glad this song is still available for me to pick. One of my favorites, my island would not be complete without it. :D

The Ramones- I wanna be sedated (the 70's)

Redemption Song - Bob Marley (1980s)

Continuing with the 80s here, but feeling good about how things are sorting out. I had Marley in my Rock Band draft this year, and it's about time he gets on my board here. Because if you're stuck on a desert island, you're going to want some Marley. Plenty of songs to choose from, but as wikipedia says, this is Marley's "seminal work," the final song on the final album... So, with my 8th pick, ranked #66 by Rolling Stone in its list of greatest songs of all time, covered by the likes of Johnny Cash, Pearl Jam, and Lauryn Hill...

Redemption Song - Bob Marley & the Wailers (1980)

[yt=Redemption Song acoustic]OFGgbT_VasI[/yt]

There's also a version with the whole band that was recently released, but I prefer the acoustic version.

[yt=Redemption Song full band]6yXRGdZdonM[/yt]

"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery..."

"None but ourselves can free our minds"

I dig it.

More, from allmusic...

I just figured out the song by B.B. King I drafted was a remake of his first hit back in 1951. Do I still get to keep it? The 1974 version I drafted is fundamentally changed, performed in concert with Bobby Bland.

I don't see a problem. :)
