IPOD Decades Songs Draft - Rankings underway

Hunger Strike - Temple of the Dog - 90's

Greatest duet ever for my money - two epic rock voices.

I was tempted to abandon the program and jump decades on this pick, but this song is a clear must have for me and with this crowd you just never know what might last... and what might not. I might be overpaying at the third pick, but I don't mind overpaying for quality.

Great pick! As long as you don't mind stealing bread...

I am not a fan of hip-hop or rap, which I'm sure most everyone knows. But this song always makes me smile...so, without further ado, I'm picking the one song I'm pretty sure NO ONE saw coming, at least from me:

U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer - 90s

[yt=U Cant Touch This]l2CR4PBoJmk[/yt]

Unfortunately, the original version cannot be embedded, so I'm picking this one instead...it will make the little princesses smile. My choice, however, is the MC version.

I have about 10 songs I want to pick here. But I think the one I could least forgive myself if I lost out on is this one:

Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Don't Stop Believin', by Journey (released in 1981).

[yt=Don't Stop Believin']OGzwNdTVHJo[/yt]

(I've got no idea what the X-Men thing is, the video is just for the song alone...)

Okay... I get it now... still seems like taking babies from candy.

For my next selection, I need to address a disco sized hole with the single greatest disco song ever written:

December 1963 (Oh, What A Night) by Franki Valli and the Four Seasons (1975)

[yt=Three]BPIQQBHPNtg[/yt]

[yt=One]r8QFNrTq9oo[/yt]

[yt=Two]TQO9LNELIKQ[/yt]

I always sing along with this song and want to dance when I hear it. Also, I could listen to it a million times over and never get tired of it.

Layla

There is a terrific documentary, Tom Dowd and the Language of Music, that includes the story of how he introduced Eric Clapton to Duane Allman, and shows Tom playing around in the studio with the Layla master tapes.

He went from working on the Manhattan Project to recording jazz greats in the 40s, and produced music for decades for an incredible range of people.

Well worth looking for. I've rented it from NetFlix, and have seen it in the cable movie listings on occasion.

Cool, I'll check it out :).

I panicked. Watching the 70's get leeched dry and the 80's run begin I diverted from my plan.

The thing that hurt most was the greatest rapper of all time (over 75 million records sold), getting play before I got around to the west coast. But (like John Lennon and Bob Dylan), 2Pac deserves alot of attention for his social activism and the way he changed music. Here is something from his softer side that everybody will probably enjoy, a tribute to his mama:

For this draft I am really trying to think of songs that will bring me fond memories while I am stranded on a deserted Island. Since this is my ring tone for my hubby, this will be a great one to listen to while I am away:

Stevie Wonder: I just called to say I love you (the 80's)

[yt=I just called to say I love you]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5IHu8RSSCvE&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5IHu8RSSCvE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/yt]

My island would just be incomplete without a little DMB. This song is one of my favorites, with its great interweaving of guitars and simple poetic lyrics. It also has an instrumental 2nd act making it a great/smooth complement to Layla :). With my 4th pick I select:

Seek Up (1996) Dave Matthews Band

[yt=Seek Up]eRVpgI4mJvc[/yt]
Sometimes I feel like I'm falling
Fall back again, fall back again,
Fall back again, fall back again
Oh, life it seems a struggle between
What we see and what we do
I'm not going to change my ways
Just to please you or appease you
Look at this crowd, five billion proud
Willing to punch it out
Right, wrong, weak, strong
Ashes to ashes all fall down
Look around about this roundabout
This merry-go-round and around
If at all God's gaze upon us falls
It's with a mischievous grin, look at him
Forget about the reasons and
The treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that
Our emotions can be kept at bay
Forget about being guilty,
We are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
Oh, look at me in my fancy car
And my bank account
Oh, how I wish I could take it all down
Into my grave, God knows I'd save
Take a look again, take a look again,
Things you have collected
Well in the end it all piles up so tall
The one being nothing, one being nothing at all
Forget about the reasons and
The treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be
Swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
You seek up an emotion
And your cup is overflowing
You seek up an emotion,
Sometimes your well is dry
You're looking for a monster
For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you, the devils not
Going--ha, ha
Say, say
Late at night the TV's hungry child
His belly swells
Well, for a price of a coke or a smoke
I could keep alive those hungry eyes
Man take a look again, take a look again, take a look again
Everyday things change,... but basically they stay the same
Forget about the reasons and
The treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that
Our emotions can be kept away
Forget about being guilty we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
You seek up an emotion
And your cup is overflowing
You seek up an emotion,
Sometimes your well is dry
You seek up a big monster
For him to fight your wars for you
But when he finds his way to you,
The devils not going--ha, ha
Fall back again, fall back again, fall back again...

Paradise City - Guns N Roses (80s)

I decided to stick with the 80s here, and went back and forth on this one, but since thinking about it this song has been stuck in my head for a long time. Which is a good thing. As allmusic says, it's nearly seven minutes long, but doesn't "feel meandering or excessive," which is important when you're stuck on an island. Also apparently happens to be Slash's favorite GNR song.

Plus, I get to post one of the greatest movie moments from the 90s. Let the party rock on.

You guys are scaring with the GNR picks so I better get mine...

Guns N Roses: Welcome to the Jungle (80's)

will post vid and write up later.
lol... after your commentary following SacKings7's last pick, I decided I was going to take Welcome To The Jungle at my next turn (it was not too awful far from being my first pick). All I had to do was wait for Kingzrool to pick, and then I was going to watch you bleed.

But at the last minute... truly the last last minute... I decided to stay with my original strategy and let the eighties wait. :)

Good one.

Public Notice: Lounge Lizard and SacKings7: You suck.
-----------------------------------------------------

There are several songs I really, really want that I think are probably safe so I've got to grab at least one Queen offering before much longer. No time like the present, I guess...

Another One Bites The Dust - Queen - 80s

Baby, this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
I find Bruce Springsteen very hit-and-miss, but Born To Run (the album) is absolutely incredible front to back, and easily in my top ten albums of all time. I'm going to take the title track Born To Run, released August 25, 1975.

Well, look what I started :p

Gonna stick with the 80's too I think

Eye of the Tiger - Survivor - 80's

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_the_Tiger

Seems Sylvester Stallone requested that this song be written. Never knew that before
This was going to be my pick had it not been for the number of GNR picks that went before me. I actually made a CD of 80's movie music that I listen to quite a bit in my car. Eye of the Tiger is track 1. If you can't get pumped up listening to Eye of the Tiger you are dead.

Many thanks for leaving it on the board :D
