Tyreke Evans will start from Day One

Saw this on Twitter from multiple sources. But Gavin Maloof relayed info from Westphal that Evans will start from Day 1. Awesome, in my opinion. No need to waste any time.

This is as it should be. We're in a much better place now then we were at this time last year with all the old vets clogging things up. Now I only wish that either Donte or Omri were doing something at the summer league to justify a similar move at the SF spot.

I doubt this will surprise anyone who has watched Beno play and then watched Tyreke play. Frankly, at this point, I would have to say Tyreke is better than JT or Greene, and its not even close. So of course he is going to start for us.

Donte is showing improvement, except with his shot selection. He's playing like Salmons now. Driving to the rim but failing to kick out when the defense shuts him down. PT and a firm hand from Westphal should fix that problem.

Omri hasn't played in a month, & he's having problem with the speed of NBA players. Conditioning and timing need to be improved.

Noc's starting job should be secure, at least until the trade deadline, but I suspect until next season. His & Martin's experience will be the stablizing force this year.

I'd rather have turnovers now, and get him used to the NBA play. If he starts consistantly about halfway through the season you're going to see his game begin to come together.

There was a link to a YouTube clip posted sometime last night that said Evans was injured, someething about a torn ligament in his hand. I can't view YouTube (the ol' dial-up problem) and was wondering if this is true how serious the injury is as it could certain impact whether or not he starts on day 1.

I also have to wonder if this is Gavin's fault - you know, jinx and all that?

This is good news, but I wonder how it will effect Udrih.

Im sure were trying to trade him .. I just hope he doesnt turn into a K9 ( big money long years no playing time no trade value player )

Between Evans and Sergio ( two very different point guards that offer a good change of pace when they enter the game ) they should get all the PG minutes .. Beno is absolutely the odd man out ..

I really like what Ive seen from Greene this summer league. He is getting after it on defense and I like what I see from him on the boards. I like that he is taking it to the rim and even posting up instead of taking bad 3's ( he still does but I think hes cut it down ) .. It looks like he has been working on becoming a better complete player and I am noticing it .. I really hope he can get at least 20 mpg this season.

In the interview Amick asked him about his finger, Tyreke said he tore a ligament in his finger but he said he is ok .. He was icing it during the interview and said he plans on playing the last 2 games of the summer league, so unless he needs some kind of surgery it shouldnt be a problem by the time the season starts...

However, I could see the Kings staff keeping him out of the last two games to prevent it from getting worse ..

Yeah, Tyreke seems like a tough dude, but I don't know if that's what I want in a great young player during summer league.

You don't want a "tough dude" in summer league? Why not? I love knowing he's not afraid of contact and can play through a little pain. Welcome to the NBA, Tyreke! It's not like his finger was severed and hanging by a tendon or anything...

I want a tough dude as in his style of play, but if he is hurt, then there is no reason that he needs to be out there. We all know Tyreke is tough and he does not need to show it in summer league. If this was the regular season, it would be a different story, but we have seen that Evans can dominate summer league already and the best option is to let the finger heal.

Fair enough. I think if it was truly an injury and not just an "owie," he'd be on his way back to Sacramento. They aren't going to take unnecessary chances IMHO.

And that's another reason for optimism. Westphal is making it clear this is HIS team. I don't want to get too excited too early, but I think we're gonna have fun...

I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!

I think it's a mistake to label him the starting PG before he's ready for it. He's pretty far away from it and just watching summer league, I can tell what teams scouts are going to see and advise to do against him. We saw it with the Bucks and it will only get harder versus NBA talent. We'd have to start Cisco at 3 if they want to have enough ball handling on the floor to be safe. Noc, Martin and Evans are a turnover nightmare waiting to happen.

Also, it means Beno is slowly going to slide down next to KT as our overpaid grumps at the end of the bench. If Beno knows he has no chance at the starter spot, he'll likely just regress mentally. These are all knocks against him, but it doesn't change the fact that it could be a negative locker room.

And to add to that negativity, Evans won't be ready to start at PG on an NBA team, not with a point forward or whatever to bail him out. His passes are off, his post feeds poor, his ball safety poor and his vision poor. He is trying to look to pass, but when all else fails he'll revert to being a scorer and that can alienate teammates. And if he doesn't developt very fast, this team is going to be very bad from the get go. Like, embaressingly bad. Add that to unhappy vets in the locker and it is not the atmosphere you want.

If Evans isn't really ready to be a starting NBA PG yet, what better opportunity to learn by doing, given that this team is destined to lose a bazillion games even if he's the second coming of Magic or Stockton? What's the risk, that we win 20 games instead of 25?

On the job learning is the best, but my concerns are what affect it will have on the franchise and team overall. And him really.

Tyreke is more ready to start as a 19yr old then Beno is as a 26 yr old. I'm sure if you ask any gm around the league who they would rather have starting at pg next season, every last one of them would go with Tyreke.

Fans are going to be more excited watching us patch things over with Beno than the raw potential of Tyreke, really?
I totally echo your puzzlement.

I'll pay money to come down from the forest and watch Evans as he learns the ins and outs of being a point guard in the NBA. And from what most people are saying, I suspect that's a much more realistic prevailing attitude. Fans WILL pay for hustle and energy, even if there are mistakes. Jason Williams is forever the stereotypical example of that...

I've never been overly concerned with the "starter" label, however, and I'm not changing that over Evans. I don't care who starts - I want to see energy and excitement, heart and hustle on the court and I think having Tyreke Evans on our team just tipped the scales way over in favor of that happening.

Who really cares about what Beno thinks or how he acts. Do you really think he was making a ton of friends by blaming everyone else on the team when he turned the ball over the last few seasons?

I'm not really sure how you can say he won't be ready to start at PG. His passes seem to be on to me, and while he may not have great court vision when compared to some other PG's, his vision is good enough that he's been consistently finding open teammates for good looks. I'll take that. I agree that his biggest weakness as far as I can see is getting the ball into the post, but by learning little things like using angles comes with experience and that is something he doesn't have much of yet. If he can't get the ball into the post in April then I would start worrying about it, but as of now let the kid grow a little.

I also think he'll adjust fine to dealing with smaller quick guards who pressure him while he brings the ball up, once he begins using his size to keep them at bay.

I'm actually tired of hearing this. If the team moves, it will be because there isn't going to be a new arena, period. No new arena means it just isn't financially viable to stay in Sacramento, regardless of how many fans show up. Sell-outs won't even save the team without a financially viable arena.
