His college stint should be dropped from the cons list...

College is not the NBA... and similar to the difficulties of a college coach making the jump to the NBA, going from the NBA to the college ranks is also extremely difficult.

The NCAA and NBA are totally different... with recruiting to the amount of time to actually get to practice with your players its not at all the same.

Also last i checked pepperdine is still not that awesome at basketball.

I think he is a good signing regardless of what happened in college. Adelman had a horrible stint with the warriors before he came here, and that turned out pretty well. I expect coaches to have their ups-and-downs during their careers, but he has a pretty good nba resume.

- doesn't make me feel good about maloofs once again
but hey I thinks it's a pretty good decision not better than Thibadeau though
Hmmm...let me see...we were the worst team in the NBA last year with the worst coach and the league's worst attendance...sounds like we made a BOAT load of money to pay a top notch coach!

The story I've heard is that both Thib and Rambis withdrew themselves from consideration just before Westphal was selected by the Kings. E. Jordan was gone to Philly. Besides, there were virtually no more "big name" head coaches to be had as real possibilities at this late date. Avery wanted around 7 million per year smacks and JVG apparently was very content with his job at ESPN under a new 5 yr contract. As Amick said in breaking the news, "Westphal was the last man standing."

According to ESPN we offered it to Rambis who turned it down because he didn't want to make this decision during the finals. We then offered it to Westphal.......sound like we really got "our guy"....maybe he was just the last warm body available??

I'm just not to excited about this guy.

with little time left before the draft it was a necessity to pick westphal.. its not like he was the maloofs choice

and they really thought this over. they cant wait till the finals is over who knows what could happen.. phil retire rambis takes over? and westphal loses interest, with tom thib already backed out of the coaching race.. who do we get? right?

it was the right time since westphal and petrie have much to discuss especially with the draft.. witht his decision westphal can meet up with rubio whos planning a trip to the USA..

I like him having some college experience. He's going to have several players next year that aren't that far removed from college, players that he has to develop. It's a plus. He's got a good resume, and from what I heard on the radio he's adamant about improving the defense and rebounding. He also has personnel experience, which I think is an overall plus for this organization. Overall, he appears to be a good choice. The proof will be how much this team improves over the course of next year.

Yeah, this does distinctly smack as settling, but it appears we dilly dallied around, and lowballed everybody for so long that people were starting to drop out. Not exactly a credit to our forever search techniques, and then we end up settling for one of the first guys we interviewed 6 weeks later before he too pulled out.

Doesn't change Westphal as a potentially safe + solid choice. But does make it look like this whole process was starting to turn into another debacle -- first the Whis/Musselman mess after Adelman got canned. Then the Stan Van Gundy leaving us on the altar thing resulting in Theus, and now this.

Yawn, ho hum. Not thrilled about this choice, but don't hate it either. We now have a coach with legit NBA experience on the cheap and after two drastic misfires this was a prudent pick. Really is a signal we're looking at development rather than trying to make a splash.

I note its yet another of our two year deal -- which is prudent on the one hand, but combined with the ultracheapness not much of a move toward stability/vote of confidence.

I didn't catch that. Doesn't sound like the Maloofs are sure about their own choice. Doesn't exactly give me confidence in the stability of the coach going forward. The players will also see a vote of little confidence - not good. The Maloofs are so weak. If they could, they'd try to get him on a month to month basis...

Rumor was that Rambis wanted more than 1.5 million too. Westphal took it and is now the lowest paid head coach in the league.

I think I would've preferred Thibodeau, but with that rumored coaching staff of Westphal, I'm more than satisfied.

More assistant coach rumors

Brian Gates and Brain James.
Don't know either of them. If he gets Porter and Elie though, whoever he wants to fill out the bench with will be fine. Add in Coachie and Reef I guess in the background, and it would be a pretty solid crew.

One query -- given how cheap we were on the coach, how much are we going to be willing to pay these assistants? does the cheap go all the way down the staff? Or will they earn the standard amoutn for assistants (no idea what that is) and just have a smaller gap between them and the head coach than most teams?

Brian James

His most recent job was an assistant for Milwauke (2005-2007). Before that James served as an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons (1995-98), Toronto Raptors (1998-01) and Washington Wizards (2001-03). James also served as an advanced scout for the Seattle SuperSonics (2004-2005) as well as an NBA analyst for ESPN.com.

All I know about this guy is that he was the coach of the year in the D League two years in a row.(2007 and 2008 I think)

I don't know what's so wrong with Westphal. He was third on my list (behind Rambis and Thib, in that order), but I think that's a pretty good list. Better than either of the other two coaching search lists we've had in the last three years. I think it's a good hire, and if his bench staff is what we think it will be, I think it could be an even better hire than both Rambis and Thib, because of the collective experience and pedigree -- not to mention Coachie's involvement.

Had we hired, Eddie Jordan, I could understand the frustration. But while Westphal might not be a homerun, I think he's easily an extra base hit, maybe even a triple.

I agree, this is a good hire. Of course, there are better coaches than Westphal out there, but at 1.5M a year he is a steal. Reports were that Avery Johnson was asking for 7M a year. So in comparison, I think we got a pretty good coach for a very good price.

One thing that seriously bothers me:

We all know now that Adelman and the owners had a degrading relationship that reached a breaking point. When he left, the Maloofs went on the radio and claimed they wanted a team that focused on defense because that's what winning teams have.

Rick came on the radio and said that if you want a defensive team, get defensive players.

Yesterday, I heard a Maloof (forgot if it was Joe or Gavin), on KHTK say that Paul would get an uptempo offense back to Sacramento and how exciting that would be.

Did anybody else cringe when they heard that? It's not so much about getting an offensive coach, it's about the complete 180 he pulled in throwing Rick under the bus for being offensively minded and then pointing out how great Paul will be because of his offensively minded style. When does it end?

Very true. The Maloofs and Rick blamed each other at the end there over defense. In just 3 years time history has already proved Rick 100% right and the Maloofs 100% wrong about that. The Kings went into the cellar with their new "defensive-minded" coach and Rick went on to coach his strong defensive team deep in the playoffs.

Not to mention the 02/03 Kings were arguably the best defensive team in the NBA under.....Rick Adelman. He had decent defensive players on the roster, though and the team just played better defense, in general.

And I still recall something I noted at the time, but did not think was a huge issue until the events of later years -- as the 03-04 season kicked off Rick talked about how nobody could tell him that the team was the same as before, even though the core was pretty much all back. That it wasn't as long or versatile and people shouldn't expect the same results. At the time you looked out there and saw Vlade and Peja and Doug and Mike etc. and said, well its pretty much the same. But Rick was of course very much right in retrospect. In that one one summer that team was stippred of the vast majority of its length and athleticism, probably 4 of its 6 best defensive players...and they were replaced by Brad Miller and Darius Songaila.

02-03 --> 03-04 Out:
Keon Clark
Scot Pollard
Hedo Turkoglu
Jim Jackson
healthy Chris Webber
Damon Jones

03-04 --> In:
Brad Miller
Darius Songaila
Tony Massenberg
Rodney Carney
Anthony Peeler
Bum Knee Webb

throw in rapidly aging Vlade and Doug, and is it any shock the defense fell off so dramatically? Old Vlade, Brad Miller, and Peja Sotjakovic, backed up by Darius Songaila and 6'4" Anthony Peeler as a defensive frontcourt?
