Breaking: Artest Traded to Houston

I LOVE this trade... We get Greene (a guy who we were looking at at @12). who is a legit 6'9-6'10 (see him standing next to Beasley, he's a couple inches taller). Any a #1 next year??

This is the best we could have hoped for. Beno/Martin/Greene/Thompson/Hawes is a BIG front line. 6'3 pg - 6'7 sg - 6'10 sf - 6'11 pf - 7'0 c!!

I know Greene isn't going to start or anything, but he shouldbe the future SF if everything works out. The kid can shoot, and he's a decent rebounder at the SF position.

GREAT DEAL KINGS!

HILARIOUS!

Rockets fans at their fan sites think they ripped off the kings. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

It's much like the way it was when we traded for Ron. Indy fans were like Kings fans today and Rockets fans were like Kings fans then.
The Rockets have got to know what they are in for.
like someone posted earlier its all about pov. if you were a 55 win team, and was able to get one of the NBA's top defenders and what some would consider one of the current best players on both sides of the ball and not have to give up any part of your core. wouldnt you think thats a steal. adelman has coached artest and did a decent job, if (and thats a big if) he can control him, i think its a great trade for houston. you keep your starting 5 that gave you 55 wins and add artest who make you better on defense and offense.

now when i say a steal for houston, that doesnt mean the kings got ripped off. i just meant the rockets got what they wanted and had to give up what in their eyes seemed like nothing. we got exactly what we wanted. i mean we're not as dumb as memphis we actually got something...an expiring/young/1st rounder. im not overly excited about the pieces we got like others on this board. considering other names thrown out there like prince, odom marion or whatever, and the fact that we already have 3 pg under contract. but hey we got what we wanted and we cant just sit around waiting to see if the rumors were true. we were offered an expiring, a young guy, and a 1st rounder so we took it and im fine with that. of course id like a higher pick, but petrie can do wonders with late 1st round picks so though not super excited, im happy with getting something out of ron.

overall if you're a kings fan or a rockets fan...the trade works

Sam Amick just said for money reasons Sean Singletary or Pat Ewing Jr likely going to Houston as part of complete deal.
Rather see Ewing go for obvious reasons. At this point I'd rather see QD go than SS, but with Bobby coming back, a backup PG isn't as big a need as yesterday.

With this obvious move toward youth and a rebuild. I wonder if Miller and Moore will se more time on the bench in favor of JT and Spencer than if we were going for the playoffs.

The thing is, the Rockets are probably the only team in the NBA right now (maybe Dallas too with Carlisle) that can feel reasonably comfortable about acquiring Artest because Adelman already has a proven track record of being able to utilize Ron and keep his personality under control. Ron raved about him for the few months he was here. I'm sure they'll be fine.

YES! YES! YES!

That, along with a "happy dance," was my initial reaction. After a bit of time to consider it all in detail, I have the same reaction. I can go to bed happy tonight.:D

Does anyone remember what the scuttlebut was on draft night about why Greene dropped so much? As long as it's nothing something to be majorly concerned about, it could very well be a good thing he slipped. Nothing like a young talent with a chip on the shoulder...

Don't know if it was posted yet, so forgive me if it was:

Ron Artest didn't opt out, then doubted his decision, asked for a trade, then backed off. It looks like none of that is Sacramento's problem anymore.

Artest

NBA front-office sources confirmed to ESPN.com that Artest will be dealt to the Rockets in exchange for Houston's first-round draft pick in 2009, ex-King Bobby Jackson (who arrives with a $6.1 million expiring contract) and the draft rights to Donte Greene. The Kings will also receive more than $1 million in cash, according to The Houston Chronicle, but the deal can't be announced before Aug. 14 because Greene is not eligible to be traded before then.
The trade -- which will reunite Artest with Rick Adelman, one of his favorite coaches -- was first reported by the Chronicle.
"Yes, it has been tentatively agreed upon," said Artest's agent, Mark Stevens, according to KRIV television in Houston. "Now it has to be confirmed by the league office and until that is done, it's not official."
Two weeks ago, Artest told ESPN.com that he was unhappy with himself for not opting out of his deal and becoming a free agent before the July 1 deadline. He hoped to be traded to "a team out there that can be more committed than Sacramento to me."
In Houston, Artest would team with Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming to form one of the toughest trios in the NBA. With Yao injured much of the season, the Rockets finished 55-27 last season, good for third in the Southwest Division. They lost in the first round to the Utah Jazz in six games.
When told of the deal, McGrady was ecstatic.
"I couldn't be more happy," McGrady said, according to KRIV. "Pleased at how the organization is trying to improve this team, get the help that Yao and myself really need to really get to where we want to be and that's one of the elite teams in this league.
"If this is true, this is definitely what I have been waiting on for 11 years in my career, for a team to really improve and put the talent [on the floor] that I feel that we can compete with the best."

Injuries held Artest to only 57 games last season, but he averaged 20.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game for the 38-44 Kings. Sacramento traded point guard Mike Bibby during the season last year and dealing Artest shows that the team is in full rebuilding mode under second-year coach Reggie Theus.
"He brings a mental and physical toughness" McGrady said, according to KRIV. "He brings a guy that competes at a high level on the basketball court. Defensively, he's tough. Offensively, he is a force to be reckoned with. He's probably one of the most difficult guys to guard on the perimeter because of his size, because of his strength."
The 28-year-old Artest is as well known for his volatile personality as his basketball skills. While playing for the Indiana Pacers, he was the central figure in the 2004-05 brawl with fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills during a road game against the Detroit Pistons.
He was suspended for 73 games, the NBA's harshest punishment for a fight. In December, two civil lawsuits against Artest that stemmed from the fight were dismissed.
Artest had surgery on his left thumb in April and was expected to take 8-to-10 weeks to recover. His summer has been just as turbulent as most of his NBA career.
After wavering for more than two months, Artest elected not to opt out of the final year of his contract for $7.4 million by July 1. But the forward immediately announced he regretted his decision, saying the Kings had misled him on their interest in a long-term contract extension. Artest also said he couldn't see himself playing in Sacramento beyond next season.
Artest apologized to the Kings a few days later but one week after that, Artest demanded a trade, claiming he had been blinded to his career well-being by his friendship with the Maloof family, which owns the Kings.
Joe Maloof responded sharply to Artest, warning the forward to muzzle himself. Two weeks later, the Kings apparently found a taker for Artest's defensive skills and high-maintenance personality.
Artest played 40 games for Adelman and averaged 16.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and a career-high 4.2 assists. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive first team.
The Kings, meanwhile, would be thrilled to get their hands on Greene, a 6-foot-11 forward from Syracuse who impressed the club in pre-draft workouts. Greene was drafted by Memphis with the 28th overall pick and traded to Houston in a three-team deal on draft night.
Although Greene played just one college season, he proved to be a versatile scorer who could fit well into Theus' uptempo game plans.
Jackson, who split his time between New Orleans and Houston last season, averaged 7.7 points per game. This would be his second stint with the Kings where he had his most productive years of his career from 2000 to 2005.

It was Darrell Arthur that had so weird issues going on that made him drop. I don't recall anything about Greene. But if it was so I'd like to know myself. 1 month before the Draft alot of mocks had us taking Greene ourselves.

So far everywhere iv read/watched/heard is saying Jackson, player to be named later(Greene) and a 1st rounder....

where did you guys get a 1st rounder or Greene + Jackson ?

This is exactly how I am feeling right now (along with a celebratory beer buzz toasting farewell to the "Ron-Ron" days in Sacramento).

I don't know that there were any major red flags. A somewhat disappointing college season was probably the main thing. Some concerns about maturity level, whether he was ready to handle an NBA lifestyle. Most people thought he needed another year at Syracuse. And his shot selection was criticized by everybody. Looking at the draft again, it looks like a lot of "upside" big man prospects snuck in ahead of him. Cleveland wanted somebody more ready to help right away, Orlando was deadset on getting Courtney Lee to fill their void at SG, San Antonio fixated on George Hill for some unknown reason with Batum off the board, and then the rest are all big men.

Early on (which is now hours ago) into the Breaking News phase there were a few mixed reports out of Houston. It does appear (although not official until Aug. 14) that it's Artest for BJax, future first rounder, a mil cash, Greene (although cannot officially be named until Aug. 14) plus at least one other Kings player to make it work financially (most likely Sean Singletary).

Don't get me wrong, its time to move on and focus on the kings. Don't take my "attachment" to Ron too seriously, that was the past. From a Kings fan's standpoint, I think Bobby is being thought of as the Bobby of old, instead of simply "old Bobby".
Bobby is still better than the other Bobby as in Brown and Singletary. Better than AJ last year as a backup. At least it gives one if not both young PG's a year to gel as the 3rd string.

That's encouraging, then. As is this quote after his 40-point summer league performance:

“You have to come out here with the confidence to prove everybody wrong,” Greene said. “I did that. I definitely had a lot of fun [doing it].”
If one of the knocks on Greene in college was lack of motivation, nothing like a rude awakening on draft night to kickstart the engine...

i hope that its douby that gets added to the trade... i could care less about singletary, ewing and brown....

I was able to scout Greene this year, and I was actually looking at him with my mock draft anywhere from 12 to 17 or so.. He's definitely top 20 in talent.

Below is my writeup on Greene I did near the end of the college season.

"Greene has tremendous height at the SF position and athleticism which will create matchup problems for anyone attempting to guard him whether it be a SF or a PF. Donte can hit open shots out to NBA 3pt range with ease and can also create his own shot off the dribble. Greene has shown he can get to the line when he wants, but seems to shy away from contact and shoot jumpers more so then driving into the lane. Green isn't a bad rebounder as his stats might indicate. It has more to do with him not being in position on the offensive end to get the rebound. His defensive rebound totals matchup with any tweener forward in the draft so as long as he drives to the basket more then he shouldn't have a problem. Defensively Greene is not a liability, but he isn't a stopper either. More of a weak side help defender. Greene also needs to learn that he has four other teammates on the floor. He tends to hold the ball too long before taking a shot."

Say what you want about Ron, that's a whole different story. But it amuses me how many people on this board are happy that we got (more than likely) two late round first round picks and a scrub for Ron. It just seems to me there were better deals out there.

Overall, its a good deal for Ron, he gets to reunite with Adelman.....and Yao/McGrady/Artest/Scola makes these guys a pretty serious team.
I know Dave. Life is a B***h sometimes. Now what do you do for ratings.:D:D

Are you effing serious? Greene is a good player who played for a large D1 school who had ZERO support around him, and still lit it up being the player opposing defenses keyed on. PLUS he scored most of his points on jumpshots. This kid will make an amazing SF that will give a matchup problem to anyone that guards him. Plus, what happens if Ron artest screws things up in Houston, and McGrady, and/or Yao go down with their yearly injury? Houston could be headed to the lottery and the Kings will get that pick (unless there is some kind of protection on the pick).

Bottom line is we got a GREAT deal for Artest. I will say it here, and you can quote me on this in a year or two Greene will be a good player for the Kings. If I am wrong you can quote me too, and I will say that I was wrong. I got a chance to scout Greene this year, and talent wise he is definitely top 20 in the draft. He was highly recruited out of high school, and had issues which were out in the open with the coaching style at Syracuse. At the start of the season (2007-2008 college season) he was ranked in the top 10. I believe he slipped because of the issues he had, plus Syracuse didn't make any noise.. But I am sure you saw Syracuse play this year.. Greene was the only player that gave a damn.

As for your last comment.. ON PAPER that team looks good, but Yao/McGrady have yet to prove anything.. Adding Artest to the mix might screw what they had up. Probably not, but I don't see them as a contender because of the different personalities they have. I wouldn't be surprised if the injury bug hit them (like it does every year) and you have Artest trying to take the team over only to have Yao/McGrady come back, and then some descension form because Artest is still in "command" mode.

I really try. It was just so hard for me because the idiot came hunting for me. It wasn't even that i didn't agree with opinion...he purposely hunted me down in the Kings forum just to make me look stupid. I was so mad at the time i didn't care for the forum limits. Im going to hunt him down when im unbanned and make him look stupid for anything he posts now, and im gonna keep it within the rules. I'll show him.
Atta boy...If you don't come back, is there anything you want us to tell your family?

Maybe Carmichael Dave tags along with RonRon to Houston where there's 4 big sports radio stations. After all, H-town is 4th largest city in U.S. Would need to change his name when he got there and finally learn to dress like an adult instead of mostly looking like a teenager who just got done mowing someones lawn.:D

Really good trade for both sides. RonRon gets to help the Rockets get to the championship level with a coach who knows him, Kings get BJax, a big time fan favorite who can score in bunches and has the know how to help the 1/2 kids AND is an expiring, Donte Greene is a real upside for a 3 and a Rockets first round, likely to be down around 25 or so AND some cap relief AND a really young and talented team.

I like it. Now time to move on. I kinda hope that is the last trade as I think Brad is critical to the team for his experience and he has a chance to have a second season like last while Hawe, Thompson and crew get their game together.

Heard about it at our favorite watering hole Stockton Bridge Grill over the water at Capitola Beach. Both me and Mrs. CD were elated. :D
Man, how can you bring up one of my favorite places in the world. I was having such a good time. Damm..
