This is the original version of the song on youtube - as close as I can come to finding the remix online. The remix isn't THAT much different than the original, just adds some additional bass and tightens up the music a bit, but it is fairly similar and I can use the original just as well here. One lyrical change in the remix I find interesting is it drops the last stanza of the song for some reason....

Just one of the best songs ever. One of the most recognizable guitar melodies ever. Its a song that I don't remember a time not knowing. I could play it on the piano since I was tiny and I remembering knowing it even before then. One of the most chilling songs out there.

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

My last choice (The Freshman, Verve Pipe) Reminded me of this song because the two bands have very similar names ... Obviously this is a great song, i dont think ive ever met somebody who didnt enjoy it.

I'm fooling myself thinking I have tough choices to make, but anyways... my next pick is:
"The Wanderer" - Dion (1961)

Dion's another artist who has quite a few great songs I love but that I'd have a hard time justifying taking an entire album along with me to one of my desert islands. The Wanderer edges out the others as my pick for this island. Its got quite a bit going for it, on the surface its a very happy go lucky sing along song, but its also got a dark side - the protagonist as exciting as his life seems from the opening (I'm the type of guy who will never settle down/Where pretty girls are well, you know that I'm around/I kiss 'em and I love'em 'cause to me they're all the same I hug 'em and I squeeze 'em they don't even know my name) is also leading a rather empty life "...I'm going nowhere".

Plus I love The Wanderers movie, and this song plays throughout. So there you have it.

Oh where to go next... I had a country one lined up here, but I think I'm going to go with this one:

I still scratch my head over whether or not this song is sung as a true believer or completely tongue in cheek or a bit of both. Either way it reinvigorates a debate I often have with myself and some of my "activist" friends - can change be accomplished within the system or does more drastic action need to take place? This is a concept I've struggled with for about 15 years - ever since a political science professor at my University offered the theory that voting was nothing more than a feel good measure enacted by the founding fathers to keep the populace from rioting or worse. I tend to waver back and forth between "what a complete loon" and "holy crap, he was right all along" over the years and I find this tune a humorous accompaniment to that debate.

In any event, there is a little story here about a guy who is ending it with his girl who left him high and dry at their moment of truth at the WTO protests. How serious this is is up to the listener. And should I find myself stranded on a desert island this tune will be a pleasant reminder that I never have to worry about politics again.

I'm with you on the Boss...ipod may serve up a couple of his songs as well. Glasnost should have made him palatable....weird that there are commie thread monitors who still reject him..
