My first pick is

Blue Monday - New Order - original 12 inch version

This is the highest selling 12 inch of all time and spent months at # 1 on various different charts in America and the UK. I am grabbing it now because I know it is on bozzwell's list.

Brick, I added a link to this post. Can you set it up for me to copy next time? I tried once before to no avail. Thanx.

Hey, I was at Six Flags all day with my family. Sue me. ;)

Just a warning - I am going to just go stream of consciousness for many of my picks - like many have said, this could probably easily go 50 rounds and we'd still be picking good songs. ;) So I am taking this one a little less seriously about being strategic and just choosing favorites all the way in whatever order they hit upon me.

My first selection is:

Oh L'Amour - Erasure - (Matt Darey Mix) - Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me Pt. II - CD single - Import

I tell ya - the high-energy Erasure mixes are tops on my list - I will probably choose several before this thing is over. This is the first, and one of my favorite all-time songs (both the original and most remixes in one form or another - including the Funky Sisters Remix on their Wonderland album).

[yt=Oh L'Amour (Matt Darey Mix)]lXDNP3rVpVQ[/yt]

By the way - this is a song almost 9 minutes long. The beginning is about 2.5 minutes, and the song picks up a bit after that. I personally like the beginning part, but some like to skip it; in fact, there is a mix available that cuts it out on youtube as well.

Edit - I also don't know why someone couldn't have used a higher-resolution CD single photo than that blurry mess. :confused:

Hell yeah. Six Flag Magic Mountain? If so, my favorite amusement park ever. Haven't been there in about 2 years. Man that place is awesome.

Onto business. Now that I think about it, I wonder if I would have taken Good Vibrations or Strawberry Fields if I had an earlier pick. Because taking this song feels just as right. But damn, is Good Vibrations an awesome island song...

With my #1 pick, I pick one of the most well-known songs ever. A song that came out at a time when the songs on the Billboard 100 were actually good. Its a song that topped that list for nine straight weeks and is regularly included at the very top of lists of all-time great songs. By the way, did I say anything about it being a fairly good song? Well, it is....and its

Hey Jude - The Beatles (1968) - single

[yt=Hey Jude]YXG83p2nkHw[/yt]

Written by Paul McCartney for John Lennon's son, Julian, during his parents time of divorce, this song is important to millions of people for millions of different reasons. For me, I love build up songs, and it is one of the best ever at that. Also, it is one of the few later Beatles songs where you can tell each member has himself invested into making the song great. At the end there, so many of their songs were a one-man show, an audition for each of their solo careers that were soon to be. This song, on the other hand, is a collaboration of 4 of the greatest musical talents ever all at their best.

Oh, and here's the alternate version I almost picked :D

No PM...luckily I'm paying attention!

I can't sleep...perhaps that's what made me change this pick at the last minute. Oh well...I'm confident I'll be happy with it in the morning. Well, LATER in the morning...

Baba O'Riley - The Who - From the album Who's Next

When I was in a sketch comedy group in L.A., we always had a pre-show audio CD...it was a combination of background music for the audience as they filed in and it also served as music that would help pump us up for the show. Each member of the group chose tracks for that CD so it ended up being a pretty eclectic mix of music...from Louis Prima, to Chicago Transit Authority, to Andrea Bocelli, to Depeche Mode. I always chose Baba O'Riley, and everyone seemed happy with the choice.

Plus, as a junior high teacher, I think I know a little bit about "teenage wastelands."

[yt=The Who - Baba O'Riley]hKUBTX9kKEo[/yt]

And here's another version I happen to REALLY like:

[yt=Pearl Jam--Baba O'Riley--1993]BOHlG31Oqfc[/yt]

Great pick, I almost went this way myself. I sure hope people continue to pick the Beatles, because I also don't like them. Although I admit that I haven't heard a whole lot of their songs.

No, I live near Sacramento, so we went to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo for the day. It is better for the small kids (and we had my 5-year old son and two cousins at 4 and 2 with us).

I do like Magic Mountain quite a bit - when I lived down there I had a season pass for a couple years.

I haven't heard many of their albums (just several of their hits), and while I appreciate and like their music, none of it is going with me either.

Pick #1!!!

Time for my first pick eh...Well it would be hard not to pick the greatest and best song in the world. I pick

Tribute, by Tenacious D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHK60vIQWuE

[yt=Tribute -- Tenacious D]pcJwz7wu8_s[/yt]

Jack Back is hilarious, and the range, acoustic/electric blend, and the story make this song bring a smile to my face every time I hear this song.

Okay, that's obviously a major song and impossible to argue with, and it was sure to be taken in a singles draft, especially as this one has started off with a much more classic feel than the albums draft.

But that Pearl Jam version was just a mess. :p

When you get a chance, hit edit on your post and look at the simple code I used to turn it into a window.

Unfortunately you may need to find a new youtube, because it calims that one is no longer available (maybe whoever owns the movie rights squalled to youtube or whatever).

Well, to be fair, I had one from 2007 that was MUCH better, but it was taken down this morning. They've been covering that song for years.

Woohoo, I'm up...I'm going to join others in having zero strategy in this...so here is the first song that struck me when I flipped through my ipod...

Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed

[yt=Gimme Shelter]LJMnES7WoT4 [/yt]

I may come back later and put something up for it, but for the sake of expediency, just will drop my pick title. I had heard a lotta Stones music growing up, but this one resonated much much later. The law firm I worked for had an annual night that we would do the phone banking for a pledge break for our local PBS station in Sacramento. One night we were banking during a Stones concert broadcast and I remember being gripped by this song in a way - so it must have had a different reason to resonate with me. Great song.

here we go .. im guessing im one of the younger participants in this draft so with my first pick ..

Blink 182 - Feeling This

This is the first of many blink songs that'll go on my ipod. This just happens to be the band i "grew up with" and this being my favorite song from that band.

I think when embedding isn't allowed that's the message you get if you post it in youtube tags, but if you go to the actual link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcJwz7wu8_s) it still works fine.

I found this to be rather ironic, since the person who should have sent you the PM in a timely manner was awfully anxious before HIS pick.

:p
For some reason, I think you would have found it funny even if I hadn't been so seemingly anxious.

Truth be told, my internet connection went on literally seconds after I submitted my pick. It finally came on a few hours later, and by then making the PM had completely slipped my mind.

Believe it or not, but I have been involved in 5 drafts now and this is probably the 3rd time I've missed a PM.

By the way, a Blink 182 pick this early......very interesting. I mean, I could see some, but "Feeling This"? What about one or two of their huge early 00's hits? Do you just like Feeling This better?

It's quite alright...I was online and knew I was next. No worries...

Hey comish, what's the ruling on profanity? I mean, I'm sure I could find a link to the edited version, but... what about it?

Er...Slim, we are the board moderators. ;)

I was thinking that obviously people can take whatever songs they want, profanity or no, and the problem only arises if they are linked here. Figured there were three ways to handle that. Either:

a) Just have a warning for language with the link/window (unobtrusive solution); or

b) if there is profanity do not embed the window, and instead just include a link (less intrusive solution); or

c) if there is profanity just list the song name with no link at all (most intrusive solution).

Now that I think about it, we could also possibly enact a "two-click/broken link" rule that I've seen in practice elsewhere: since some people view the site from work, have it so that, if there's any profanity, either make it a link that requires you to click on a link from another site to get there, or just use spaces to break the link up (e.g.: http: / / www. youtube. com/watch?v=uAlMi_3ls5s). That way, it's not directly linked to the board, and nobody could reasonably say that we got them in trouble at work (or with parents, or whatever) for clicking on a link that started blaring profane music.

IMHO, the message stating that there may be profanity is fine...but then again:

1.) I have no kids who would be able to click those links.
2.) I don't work at a workplace where I'd have the opportunity to click them.
3.) I'm not working right now...
4.) I'm a pretty liberal dude when it comes to that kind of thing, and lastly,
5.) I'm not a mod and have no responsibilities when it comes to managing this site.

My two cents...

So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

Ok, so like I said I'll be limiting my picks to bands that I'm not inclined to pick an entire album of in either of the other drafts. So with my first pick I select:

"Teenage Kicks" by The Undertones (1978)

[yt=Teenage Kicks]wAtUw6lxcis[/yt]
This is their most famous tune, though they actually have a few other really solid tracks ("Get Over You" is another I am rather fond of). It is one of my favorite tunes ever and one of the tunes I used to woo my wife with when I first met her at a karaoke bar. Its got a really catchy guitar riff, and fun simple verses that repeat making the whole song and not just the chorus fun to sing along with. Its just a great little pop tune in a punky wrapper.

The song was famously championed by John Peel and played at his funeral a few years back. Its also been covered by dozens of bands of all flavors including the Groovie Ghoulies, Sahara Hotnights,Therapy?, the Buzzcocks, Green Day, Thee Headcoatees, Franz Ferdinand, the Raconteurs and KT Tunstall. Wikipedia has an even more extensive list.

My friends in the Swedish rockabilly group the Go-Getters also regularly perform this live and it is always a favorite.

I don't have an iPod. Heck, I don't even have an MP3 player. But I do have four different portable CD players. I'm only picking those songs I actually listen to on a regular basis. My first:

Footloose - Kenny Loggins - Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

If I'm gonna be stuck on an island forever, I'll need a reason to even get up in the morning. I can't think of a better song to get my toes tapping than this one:

For my next selection (which starts Round 2), I'm opting for another strong themed pick.

Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) - Green Day - Nimrod

[yt=Good Riddance]3ZuJIr_uW3M[/yt]

If you've seen Ryan's tribute to Doug Christie DVD, no further explanation is necessary. If you haven't, you need to.

This was on my list. This song just seems to go with everything. Good pick
