I know how you guys feel. I was planning on taking All Eyez on Me (its with a Z you poser!) in the second or third round. Also, Battle of LA was right outside of my top 5.

Didn't expect either to go so early, but its good to see people's tastes fleshing out this early. I guess my first choice shouldn't have been so safe, but I couldn't believe it was still available and definitely is an album I love (was anyone planning on taking Sgt. Pepper's soon?).

Slim, you need to update your list.

Sounds like everyone wants Thriller on their list. ;) So everyone, go scoop up MJ's hits while he was still, well, normal. :p Quick, do it now!

You're right, I wasn't thinking properly. It's changed now.
Were you calling me a poser? I don't get it
Haha, I was just joshing you man. Good job fixing it though. And good pick. Oh, and no you're not exaggerrating when you say he was the best rapper ever. He was. And no one will ever pass him. 90s rap is and was the only good rap. Hip hop is now dead.

And what the hells a poseur?

Oh, that's OK then. :) Yeah, I thought it might be a little early but didn't want to take any chances. I completely agree no one will ever pass 'Pac. He was special, plain and simple. I think you might like my next album choice if you're a hip hop fan. I won't give much away just yet, but your last line is the name of one of his more recent songs. You have to know who he is now :p

Haha, i've subliminally messaged myself out of another pick. Don't worry though, I'll let you have it.

Isn't someone on the clock now? Kingzrool right?

Are you sure? It was always going to be one of my picks, but I already stole one of your choices so I don't mind leaving it to you if you want it. Let me know, 'cause really, I don't mind going with something else.

has anyone seen the mtv show "america's best dance crew"? one of the episodes was a tribute to thriller (which is why it's been on my playlist lately), and some of the song remixes they did rocked.

check out this (you'll have to skip to the -4:40 mark if you want to skip the chit chat): http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?id=1582476&vid=214562

The Jimi Hendrix Experience- Electric Ladyland

I remember as a young lad my father would play this album in the house on Saturdays afternoon and even back then I thought it was special. Hendrix truly at his best.

Why is this slowing down so much? 1 pick this whole day? If we keep going this slow this will take years. Literally.

It's actually moving pretty quick thus far, with 5 picks in one day. I have actually been surprised and impressed with how fast this thread has been developing. Most replies are well within the 24 hour wait period and I am sure that perhaps in the later rounds I may not be able to respond as quickly but so far the overall pace has been encouragable I would think.

Come on Brick, Vanilla is only 8th on my list :p

I can see now that rap and hip hop aren't popular choices... Oh well!

My 2nd round pick is the one and only ;

Nas - Illmatic

Illmatic is one of the true hip hop classics. Featuring 10 songs of gold, it proves that it's all about quality, not quantity. Illmatic set the bar at a new level for the hip hop industry. Widely considered one of the best albums produced, and features in the in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, coming in at 400.

So, my second round pick is - Nas - Illmatic (1994)

BTW, thanks to tradepeja for letting me have this one. That's two albums I've stole off of you unintentionally!

bozzwell is on the clock... Also, in case it wasn't clear before, I'd like to point out to all interested parties that I work nine-ten hours a day, five days a week, and three of those days, I go straight to class after work. I try to check in as often as possible, but you don't have to wait on me to update the draft board before you make your next pick... that's the purpose of sending a PM to the next person who's up.

I really lucked out here. My number 1 choice is still available...

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (1966)

As an un-apologetic "Americaphil" I can't believe it's still available. Growing up in the 70's my favorite "toy" was my father's Telefunken stereo and associated record collection. It wasn't a huge collection, but to me it was the best and the biggest in the World, with a steady diet of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd and The Doors. There was only one Beach Boys record - Pet Sounds, then it had to be replaced for wear as I destroyed it by playing it over and over again. It worked out well for me because my dad bought me a Grundig cassette player and a copy of Pet Sounds - so I don't mess up his collection again.

Then two years ago I met this band at my friend's bar, they were playing open mic night. I liked them a lot, we started talking and leader of the band had almost identical story (dad's collection/Pet Sounds) only about 12-13 years later. We've been friends ever since and started our own independent micro-label to publish his works and few other local bands (shameless plug - www.thebackroommusic.com). In some way, this album has changed my life and inspired me to get into music as a kid and get back into music as an adult, perhaps even repaired my Karma as I was able to help someone go for their dream. Believe me when I say this, I wrote so much evil software for evil companies to eliminate jobs and sometimes whole industries, I need me some good karma. ;)

Here's what Paul McCartney had to say about this record:

"It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life ... I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album ... I love the orchestra, the arrangements ... it may be going overboard to say it's the classic of the century ... but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways ... I've often played Pet Sounds and cried. I played it to John [Lennon] so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence ... it was the record of the time. The thing that really made me sit up and take notice was the bass lines ... and also, putting melodies in the bass line. That I think was probably the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded Pepper, it set me off on a period I had then for a couple of years of nearly always writing quite melodic bass lines. "God Only Knows" is a big favourite of mine ... very emotional, always a bit of a choker for me, that one. On "You Still Believe in Me", I love that melody - that kills me ... that's my favourite, I think ... it's so beautiful right at the end ... comes surging back in these multi-coloured harmonies ... sends shivers up my spine."

So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

Good choice bozzwell. The Beach Boys (and certainly outside of Pet Sounds) don't get as much respect today as they deserve. Which is why I expect my Beach Boys selection will be safe somewhere in the 15-20th pick range.

 this thing gets tougher and tougher. excellent choice, dime dropper. this album it one of the tops in my collection and was definitely gonna be used within a pick or two of mine. it's really one of those albums that even today i can listen to and get the same enjoyment. excellent pick.

This is cliche'd by now, but seriously, I am very surprised this is still available. Maybe I'm the only grungehead here though....

Nirvana - Nevermind (1991)

The best band of the 90's most memorable and influential album. The first six songs on this things are all probably in my top 50 songs ever. This iconic album includes Come As You Are, In Bloom, Breed, Polly, Lithium, and the pinnacle of the album and definitely a top 10 song ever, Smells Like Teen Spirit. All with their heavy and poetic lyrics, memorable riffs, they are all unforgettable songs that I can't go a couple weeks without hearing.

I want to say more about this album, but that's basically it. Excellent in every sense of the word.

tradepeja,

You better be surprised! I was gonna pick Nevermind as a strategic pick and take a chance that Pet Sounds would be available later, then at the last second I changed my mind and went with Pet Sounds.

BTW, classics are never cliche, and Nevermind was an instant classic.
