K-Mart gets an offer

The Kings might be close to signing Kevin Martin to a long-term extension.

According to two league sources, the Kings have made the fourth-year shooting guard an offer of five years for approximately $55 million.

Martin, who is entering the final season of his contract, is expected to be handsomely rewarded for his breakout 2007-08 season as an agreement could be reached this week.

Martin was a rare highlight as the Kings finished 33-49 last season. He led the team in scoring (20.2 points per game) and shot 47.3 percent from the field.

Martin's agent, Jason Levien, declined to discuss the specifics of the negotiations but said he was encouraged by the progress.

"Kevin is excited about the possibility of remaining a King for a long time," Levien said. "He has a great affinity for the organization, and we're cautiously optimistic."

Last season was quite a leap for Martin, who was taken by the Kings with the 26th pick in the 2004 draft out of Western Carolina. He was left off the Kings' playoff roster in his rookie season.

His first break came midway through his second season, when former Kings guard Bonzi Wells missed nearly half the season with injuries and Martin flourished in his absence. Martin averaged 10.8 points in the 2005-06 season after averaging 2.9 points in 45 games as a rookie.

Martin was second in voting for the Most Improved Player award and made just over $1.8 million last season.

As was said in a closed thread:
Grant said that he talked to Martin and Kevin knew nothing of this. He also said he spoke with someone in the Kings org who said they knew nothing of this either.
Once again, Napier maintains his record for filling us in with reports which are totally wrong. :p

It can go either way. Remains to be seen what happens when he is the first name on the opponents board. Also he can't really defend much yet.

On the other hand - ik KT can make what he makes, if Bibby can do the same, or Miller etc, why not Kevin. Would I pay him 55 mil $ for 5 years - no I would not but someone else would.

Maybe the media and most fans will now stop calling the kid that silly, boring, Kenyon Martin cloned, K-MART nickname. Going from around a million bucks a year to over ten million smacks per is Nordstrom's exclusive - not cheap K-Mart discount:)

I am not going to jump out and say that he isn't worth it. If we are going to pay him that much I sure hope he is.

I guess we will see this next year if he really is worth it...

#41
yes because Kevin Martin is going to stay being the same kind of player for the rest of his career...

The guy is 24!!! What dont you guys understand? This contract will cover the beginning and the icing on the cake. His prime will be part of this contract and yet some of you dont want to give him this contract because last years performance should not equate to a near $11 mil per year salary.

He is only going to get better as we have seen since he entered this league. Add to the fact that when Artest will leave next year and Bibbys is gone by some other year, Kevin will get the opportunity to put up even bigger numbers.

Martin deserves it and I have no doubt in my mind that he will live up to his contract value hes improved so much in 3 years that I really can't see him being anything less then an NBA-Allstar, plus I'm just glad too see that Martin is going to stick around I love watching him play the game and thats really all that matters.

Yep. When someone asked, a few months ago, how much money we'd need to set aside for Kevin, I looked at contracts like Hamilton's and Ginobili's. Neither are very multifaceted players, but both are good for some points. Hamilton's making $9.75M-$11.4M over the next few years, Ginobili's getting $9M-$10.7M, but those contracts are both a couple of years old, and player inflation continues unabated, so an extra 10 or 15 percent is to be expected in a newer contract. Plus both of those guys play for teams with recent championships, and hopes for more, which lowers the price of their contracts a bit. And Kevin scores more than either one of them.

I think $10M-$13M over 5 years is very much in line with Kevin's market value. Are NBA players ridiculously overpaid? Sure! But Kev's no more overpaid than most of the league.
I completely agree with this comment, K-Marts market value is around 10,11 million. I think that K-mart is on a Hamilton and Caron level if he gets a contract close to that i have no problem with that. But i wished they had waited half way thru next season to sign him to make sure last season was not a fluke, but on the bright side this keeps martin long term if was not.

That just makes me think that boston and cleveland are idiots for signing Wally Szerbiak and Larry Hughes, for more than what we offered Kevin, they aren't even close to the skill level of kevin martin. Kevin deserves this more than anyone. Really, its probably safe to say that he is one of the only things keeping kings fans interested in the games. Hes like the mitch richmond of 10 years ago!

Wally, yes. But I don't think that was Boston. That was McHale in Minny.

Hughes...is a little different. That was Cleveland committing the great one year wonder fallacy, but during that one year that got Hughes his deal he was much BETTER than Kevin was last year. He put up 22.0ppg 6.3reb 4.7ast 2.9stl 0.3blk and was either first or second team all-defense. It was a huge season. The Cavs mistake was in gambling/assuming that his one huge year was somehow going to be the norm despite 5-6 previous years suggesting the contrary (although as I recall they were after Redd and Allen too and couldn't get them, so settled on Hughes).

In any case, while things begin to break down a bit at the end of the list, those are certainly two of the worst OG deals, along with maybe Cat and Dunleavy. Kevin's is unlikely to ever be "bad" like that, assuming health. If he gets no better, the $13 mil at the end of the contract will be excessive, but still only a few mil over the actual value. And even with Roy coming on and whatnot its hard to see him ever slipping too far back fo his current post. Could even see him raising up a few spots -- Rip has never really been that good, JRich has to prove the knee's stable. His contract should always be ballpark I hope.

I think at the peak of their games Wally and Larry were at kevin's level but they droped off. At some point in their careers they were both 20 point players, Wally was a an all star, Hughes was a great defender and could have been All Star if he did not suffer in an injury during a great year with Washington. At the time they both earned and deserved a contract between 9 and 11 million but their games worsen as time went along. Its just a draw back of graneted contracts.

And Boston did not sign Wally to that contract it was Minn.

The money Kevin is getting seems in the ballpark. It's not waaay out of line. But it's not great either. That said, I look at the Ginobili contract and just shake my head. The Spurs, I just hate them - or is it love, in disguise?;) Give me a freaking break. They always seem to sign these guys for nothing. What do they do? - does Pop hire some Soprano guys to make a visit with contract in hand? I think Bowen was signed for something ridiculous also. I guess Pop gets in their face sooo much he has a Stockholm effect on them and they just can't leave. That organization has it together. And that Rip contract is a steal also. We're not getting a steal with the Martin contract, that's for sure, but we may be getting fair market value if he continues to progress.

#50
If we really want a bad comparison for Kevin's contract, I think I'd pick Raja Bell over Ginobili; Kevin is not worth more than twice as much as Bell. But we aren't exactly contenders, so there's no reason to expect that players will sign with us for less than full market value. Some other team will always get a better deal than we would.

I always get nervous about giving out big contracts to players who have had just one good year. Not implying that I think it was a fluke, but it's good to know for sure it's not a fluke.

Generally I agree to uneasiness about big contracts after one year bursts. But thing is, for a young player though you're rarely going to have much more to go on (as opposed to a Larry Hughes or *ahem* Mikki Moore situation where you have years and years of proof otherwise and then the one aberration depp into their careers). Heck, Kevin is actually comparatively "old" and fully developed compared to some of the guys who enter the league at 18/19 and then you have to decide whether to drop big money on them when they are 21. And there's always the risk by the time they string together multiple 20ppg type seasons, they get Rashardlike delusions of grandeur and it costs you.

The actual art I think, the Peja art, is where you figure out the player is going to be a good one before they even do and lock them into a long term midrange deal at a time it looks like a risk. With rookie deals structured the way they are nowadays that wasn't really an option here, but if we had found a way to sit on Kevin for another year there might have been that sort of opportunity.

Might being the operative word here. I'm glad they aren't waiting, too many things can go wrong otherwise. Obviously, Kevin wanted to stay here (despite our suckatude) and the Kings wanted to recognize him for both what he has done and what they feel he will do in the future, without the potential specter of losing him. I, for one, am relieved, but then again, I'm pretty biased:D

#54
I'm relieved too. He's done nothing but improve. Opposing coaches and players have said during last season clearly he is "for real". He has great attitude and work ethic. I am happy to hear about this deal.

#55
It seems like a lot of money but when you compare him to other 20ppg scorers in the league, his deal is somewhere in the ball park of a good offer. Not a bargain by any chance but certainly not an unmovable contract.

We got him for a fair price and as Bricklayer said, maybe it will be a pricey contract in his last year but we had to sign him and we didn't go over and above the market value to get him.

Mikki Moore on the other hand.........

This I agree with you on...it's hedging your bets....by signing Martin FIRST you get him at your terms...Good enough for him to accept not ridiculous to be guaged off of another player's value.

If Martin does indeed sign this deal, which I would expect him too, I can guarantee you that Gordon/Iguodala will negotiate for more. A player/agent can always try to promote themselves as better than another player to get more.

Here Petrie is setting the market...Martin signs first...watch, I'll bet both Gordon/Iguodala get a lil more.

This is an appropriate offer from the Kings IMO.

Like I said earlier, for us to be giving Kevin $500,000 more than Rip...is just fine with me, get it done! In my mind, Kevin will hopefully mean the same to us in our ultimate quest for a championship that Rip did in Detroit. That's all that matters...championships.

#58
Do people on here really believe that he is worth 1/5 of the salary cap??? That is just ridiculous, he is good and could get better, but any more than 6 million a year is outrageous for a slightly above average OG.

Um, not to split hairs, but the salaries ALL these players make is ridiculous. Kevin's isn't any more so then the rest:D Not only do I think he is 'worth it' comparatively, but I am extremely glad the Kings organization has taken steps to ensure that one of the few bright spots in the Kings future remains her
