Lottery position thread

I doubt it's an actual coin flip. They probably just put the team names into their fancy bowl shaped like a cut off basketball and draw them out one at a time.

As for the lottery, it's not a system that looks exciting on TV. They draw out 4 ping pong balls from a hopper with 14 balls numbered 1 -14. They then have a sheet with all the possible combinations divided among the teams in the lottery. You can see the number of combination chances for each team in Kennadog's post above. So in the 8,9,10 tie, it goes 28 + 17 + 11 = 56 then 56 / 3 = 18.6. So round that off and each tied team will receive 18 number combinations. I'm guessing the extra 2 combinations are marked as NO TEAM. So they would just redraw in the unlikely chance that combination gets drawn. Riveting, eh?
I remember reading somewhere that they even have a draw/coin toss to determine who gets the oddball.

I'm thinking the same thing JB is about drawing teams from a lopped basketball for the 3way tie. I was trying to look for what they actually do for it but couldn't come up with anything, but I did come across this interesting behind the scenes article: http://www.nba.com/features/inside_lottery_050524.html

For good old nostalgia, go seach on YOUTUBE for the 1985 NBA lottery. Re-live the exciting moments of a truly rigged lottery. Witness the smacking of the corner of the Knicks envelope against the side of the hopper. Watch as David Stern peeks inside the clear hopper for the card with the bent corner. Watch him pull out the envelope with the clearly bent corner. It's all so dramatic.

I was listening to the Rise Guys early this morning and they said that the "draw" to break the ties was going to happen this morning in New York.

They thought it would be early enough to be on their show.

I can't find anything at ESPN.

Anybody else know anything about this?

I found this on the ESPN chat:

Chris Sheridan: (12:07 PM ET ) Good afternoon from the NBA Board of Governors meeting in New York. Big day for breaking lottery ties, and the owners are upstairs discussig whether they'll ever let a team go to Vegas. Plenty to chat about today, so off we go ...

Nathanael (KC): When will we hear the results from the tie breaking for the lottery?

Chris Sheridan: (12:18 PM ET ) The ornery yet delightful young lady from the NBA communications office who is sitting nearby tells me it'll be sometime this afternoon, maybe between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. EDT, and they're doing it live on NBA-TV. Stu Jackson actually plucks ping-pong balls out of a hopper. Live TV at its finest.

Hey Dime Dropper: Can you get DirecTV and NBA League Pass in Ireland?

My two week visit to Ireland in 2000 was the happiest two weeks of my life and my wife and I may even try to retire there when the time comes... beautiful country and people.

In order to preserve my own sanity I'm relying on the notion that there may be a GM picking 1-9 who has found an unknown diamond in the rough. Thus the Kings may get the player they want.

I remember the year Peja was drafted everyone was clamoring for John Wallace. I'm not sure many people had heard of Peja. So, with the game going international I'm thinking there may be some picks that completetly shock people.

Anyway, I'm hanging on that!

Unfortunately with the game going international, all that that means is that now we, along with everybody else, KNOW about the international guys who would once have been sleepers. There are no more Pejas. Heck you can go to youtube and find a mixtape of just about every player in the world who's likely to be picked in the first round.

It's official, 10th pick unless we win in the lottery (a bit better than 1/16 chance of getting one of the top 3). Well... and a 1/12 chance of dropping to 11th.

As for whether there will be any good big men left, it depends on who gets picked first and who ends up being good. I have been testing time travel techniques so that I can go forward 5 years and see what bigs will pan out. While preliminary tests have been successful, I'm afraid that it's going to take me 5 years to get there.

We're basically looking at guys like Splitter and Thabeet, and probably Hawes. If you were hoping for someone like Jianlian or Hibbert, they probably won't be options unless they totally blow it at the physicals and/or summer games.

so its official 10th pick???:( any good big men left to pick???
As of right now we are in 10th. If we get very lucky, we may get 1, 2, or 3. If we get even more unlucky, we could get bumped to 11, 12, or 13.

So the possibilities are 1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13. Chances are we'll be 10 (or 11). Most likely 10.
