Surprisingly, this was a pretty mediocre week considering the songs the contestants sang, most were uptempo high energy grooves. I think this whole group is soulfully, rhythmed challenged, outside of Blake Lewis.
PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT - Ricky Minor and the Band (A+)
In my view, there was not one performer worthy of this honor. And if this group does not begin to pick it up on their performances, this could go down as the worst group the show has seen.
Melinda Doolittle (B)
A different vibe for her, but she pulled it off. I can not say anything about her vocals. Very good. But her showmanship is coming into question a little bit. She is trying hard to be a star, and in my view she is struggling. Simon sounded like he was purposely and insincerely trying to find something bad to say.
Lakisha Jones (B-/C+)
"Conga" is the type of song that demands movement and energy. Lakisha tried, bless her heart, but it did not work for me. Again just like Melinda, vocally she was fine (even though her lack of range is being exposed). I have to give her credit for coming out of her comfort zone. But I have come to the realization that she is not going to win.
Chris Richardson (C+)
OK, this whole Justin Timber "fake" thing is getting on my nerves. I would not go see the American Idol tour just because of him alone. Now my unbiased opinion about his performance of Santana's "Smooth" is that it was just OK. Vocals was rough a little in the beginning, but he pulled it off to stay around.
Haley Scarnato (C-)
She is just not good. She looks good, but she can not move good, can't phrase properly while singing and JUST NOT GOOD. According to Simon, she is becomming a joke.
Phil Stacey (B+)
I actually thought it was his best performance to date. I did not agree with the judges at all. He is the only performance that had me groovin in my bed. He nailed it vocally. Sure performance wise it was a little on the dry side, but compared to everybody else, I thought it was good.
Jordin Blake (B-)
That song needs rhythm. She ain't got none!!! It was OK vocally. If you want to see a real American Idol performance of "The Rhythm Is Gonna Get You". Check out Latoya London from Season Three: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3EiwXsrng60 That was the bomb!!!!
Blake Lewis (B-/C+)
It was just safe for me. I am waiting to see the old Blake return. The entertaining Blake, the innovative Blake, the edgy Blake that entertains me like no other contestant. That is what set him apart from the rest, and i have not seen that for a while. I am not interested in seeing another crooner. Make me dance please.
Sanjaya Malakar (B-)
I'm sorry America, but Sanjaya will last another week and may be here to stay. He actually was not bad!!! For you old R and B heads, he had a little El DeBarge vibe going!!!! DID SOMEBODY SCRIBBLE SOME HAIR ON HIS LIP WITH A MASCARRA PENCIL
.
Predicted Bottom Three - Haley, Phil and unfortunately Lakisha
Phil is going home tonight.
