American Idol 2007

Surprisingly, this was a pretty mediocre week considering the songs the contestants sang, most were uptempo high energy grooves. I think this whole group is soulfully, rhythmed challenged, outside of Blake Lewis.

PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT - Ricky Minor and the Band (A+)
In my view, there was not one performer worthy of this honor. And if this group does not begin to pick it up on their performances, this could go down as the worst group the show has seen.

Melinda Doolittle (B)
A different vibe for her, but she pulled it off. I can not say anything about her vocals. Very good. But her showmanship is coming into question a little bit. She is trying hard to be a star, and in my view she is struggling. Simon sounded like he was purposely and insincerely trying to find something bad to say.

Lakisha Jones (B-/C+)
"Conga" is the type of song that demands movement and energy. Lakisha tried, bless her heart, but it did not work for me. Again just like Melinda, vocally she was fine (even though her lack of range is being exposed). I have to give her credit for coming out of her comfort zone. But I have come to the realization that she is not going to win.

Chris Richardson (C+)
OK, this whole Justin Timber "fake" thing is getting on my nerves. I would not go see the American Idol tour just because of him alone. Now my unbiased opinion about his performance of Santana's "Smooth" is that it was just OK. Vocals was rough a little in the beginning, but he pulled it off to stay around.

Haley Scarnato (C-)
She is just not good. She looks good, but she can not move good, can't phrase properly while singing and JUST NOT GOOD. According to Simon, she is becomming a joke.

Phil Stacey (B+)
I actually thought it was his best performance to date. I did not agree with the judges at all. He is the only performance that had me groovin in my bed. He nailed it vocally. Sure performance wise it was a little on the dry side, but compared to everybody else, I thought it was good.

Jordin Blake (B-)
That song needs rhythm. She ain't got none!!! It was OK vocally. If you want to see a real American Idol performance of "The Rhythm Is Gonna Get You". Check out Latoya London from Season Three: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3EiwXsrng60 That was the bomb!!!!

Blake Lewis (B-/C+)
It was just safe for me. I am waiting to see the old Blake return. The entertaining Blake, the innovative Blake, the edgy Blake that entertains me like no other contestant. That is what set him apart from the rest, and i have not seen that for a while. I am not interested in seeing another crooner. Make me dance please.

Sanjaya Malakar (B-)
I'm sorry America, but Sanjaya will last another week and may be here to stay. He actually was not bad!!! For you old R and B heads, he had a little El DeBarge vibe going!!!! DID SOMEBODY SCRIBBLE SOME HAIR ON HIS LIP WITH A MASCARRA PENCIL:eek:   .

Predicted Bottom Three - Haley, Phil and unfortunately Lakisha

Phil is going home tonight.

I won't be surprised if tonight features a "shocking" elimination. It was interesting that they had Melinda-Lakisha go 1-2 to start the show. I don't think that bodes well for Lakisha. But there were enough bad all around performances and bad performers left that she may survive. I agree with PR that the band was the best thing about the night.

I'm not sure I follow you on this statement.
Many people including myself believe that the producers manipulate voting patterns by how they place the singers. The first spot is a mixed bag - for strong singers its usually a solid placement, for weak singers its usually a kiss of death. The second spot is definitely a weak spot, especially during certain weeks of the season those going 2nd are almost always voted off. Furthermore placing two similar singers together encourages comparison and picking a favorite.

The best spot is the last spot aka "the pimp spot". It is given to whoever the producers want to showcase that week and it is utterly bizarre that they gave it to Sanjaya. Either they've decided to play along or they are trying some reverse psychology out.

Hmmm...I never thought about it in that way. However, I agree with you about the best spot is the last spot. Other than that, I really didn't think much about the placements.

Thanks for the explanation.

Poor Haley, nobody even seems to care :) I'd rather see what she's not wearing next week than hear Phil attempt country, either way I think it was gone this week or the next for both of them barring the major surprise. Country could be cruel to some of the divas.

Sanjaya doing Merle Haggard? Oh, I cannot wait.
Gee thanks VF, I was looking forward to a week of watered down light rock with a southern twang but now if that lovable little kid doesn't bust out Mama Tried I'm going to cry thinking of what could have been.

ONE DOWN, ONE TO GO!!!!!

I am not looking forward to next week. I am not a country music fan, plus on top of that there are so many genre driven singers in this competition. I will say that Melinda and Phil who is the most versitle left in the competition should thrive. Here is my ranking foir the remaining competitors:

1. Melinda
2. Lakisha
3. Jordin
4. Blake
5. Phil
6. Sanjaya
7. Chris

Well, failing that, how about a rousing rendition of "There's A Tear in My Beer"? Especially if he can find a way to do what Hank, Jr. did and mix in some of the original Hank?

I haven't watched much of this season simply because the contestants are not worth watching and this will more than likely go down as the worst "winner" which is pretty hard to do since some have really sucked. The only reason I watched it was because Haley was easy on the eyes so now I will have to figure out something else to do.

Hall of Famer
Post Eliminations...

1: Blake (Not the best singer, but WILL be the most successful out of this group.)
2: Melinda (Still the best singer...Does she have the image?)
3: Jordin (She's adorable)
4: Lakisha (Impressive but not thrilling)
5: Phil (Good luck)
6: Sanjaya (Improving week by week)
7: Chris (Yawn...)

Kingsfans.com American Idol Power Rankings (after Week 4)

2. Blake Lewis (1) - 22
3. Jordin Sparks - 20
4. Lakisha Jones - 19
5. Phil Stacey - 12

6. Sanjaya Malakar - 7
7. Chris Richardson - 5

I love country music! :D

Ideally, I would like to see the contestants choose "real" country music and not the pop influenced contemporary country music that dominates the air waves. And I don't have anything against that, I really do like most of the country music out today, but if you are going to have a "themed" night I would actually like to see that themed music. Like last week, just because a latino sings the song, does it really make it a "Latino" themed song ?

In any case, my rankings for the competition and some artist I would think would best fit the AI contestant:

1. Blake: Something, Tim McGraw, Garth Books, Dierks Bently or Kenny Chesney

2. Jordan: Something from Trisha Yearwood, Leann Rimes, Martina McBride or Shania Twain

3. Melinda: Something from Martina McBride, Shania Twain, Faith Hill or Trisha Yearwood

4. LaKisha: Something from Martina McBride, LeeAnn Womack, Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes or Faith Hill

5. Phil: Something from Lonestar, Brooks and Dunn, Rascal Flatts, Phil Vassar, Vince Gill

6. Sanjaya: Whatever his little heart desires

7. Chris: Something from Billy Currrington, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw or Rascal Flatts

P.S. I would also like to suggest that we don't have "mentors" who could never actually win the competition themselves ::coughJLocough::

I am very worried about LaKisha. I think she'll be gone in the next 3 weeks :(

Back to previous comment because someone read it and said that it makes no sense: I am Latino and if I sing a country song, can it be said to be a latino themed song just because I am of Latino descent? I'm all about the validity of a song and its genre. Besame Mucho? Latino themed. Sway? Not to Latino themed.

I hope I make sense now :)

Country music is very forgiving

Some hits and some misses but with one exception we were able to save songs from being completely butchered!

1. Jordin – Love her!
2. Melinda – I am sad I don’t have anything bad to say. But ICAM 100% with Simon and have for a while, she needs to loose the surprise, “oh little o’ me?” response. That has been the #1 thing that has bothered me about her.
3. Phil – The best he’s been since the top 12
4. Blake – It was just ok. Not bad, not great.
5. Lakisha – ::sigh:: Not a good night for her
6. Chris – I love Rascal Flatts and their lead singer is a bit nasaly, but not that nasaly.
7. Sanjaya – Oy. The game is over. Please send him home now

David Letterman had the founder of www.votefortheworst.com on his show last night and they talked a LOT about how funny it is to keep Sanjaya around. The guy made a point of saying it doesn't matter if some of the better singers win, because they'll get record deals anyway. He just wants to see Sanjaya get a recording contract... The only good thing is that Letterman aired AFTER the voting had concluded for this week.

Here's how I thought they did last night:

Melinda
Jordin
Blake
Phil
Lakisha
Chris
Sanjaya

Lools like Reina and I, both country fans, had pretty much the same reactions.

Hall of Famer
Phil --- (A) --- Best guy performance of the night...Phil seemed right at home, and this was by far his best performance to date...He has a country career ahead of him, if he so chooses.

Jordin --- (A) --- Has overtaken Melinda, in my book, as the best out there. She has the adorable personality to go with the look, and most importantly...The voice!

Chris --- (C-) --- Nasally and boring...Pretty much the same as every other performance minus his 2 standouts.

Lakisha --- (C) --- She has the voice, just a bad genre for her...She didn't flop like I predicted, and she will stick around for a few more weeks.

Sanjaya --- (F) --- One week after proving he had vocal talent, he comes out with this? Terrible, and this could be the epic flop that takes him home.

Melinda --- (A) --- For the first time, she actually looked the part of an American Idol...She looked almost as good as she sounded! ... However, I do agree with ReinadelosReys and Simon, she does need to lose the shocked look...I really have had a little thing against her after she started crying after one of her performances because "It was like an out of body experience, I've never done so good!" ...

Blake --- (B) --- Better than average, but still just not great...Blake needs to be Blake again, and hopefully soon...More bland-ish performances moving forward and a slip-up could be the competition for him.

Rankings for the Night.

1: Phil (He sounded 1000% country-western superstar)
2: Jordin (She'd normally be #1, but Phil tore it up)
3: Melinda (Any of the top three could be switched, it's just personal taste)
4: Blake (A big step down from the top 3 tonight)
5: Lakisha (And another big step down from Blake)
6: Chris (I called he didn't have the voice for country, and he proved it)
7: Sanjaya (The straw that breaks the camels back?)

Bottom 3: Lakisha, Chris, Sanjaya.

Going Home: Chris

That is just dumb. (Not you VF;)) Funny for who? Personally, I think its cruel to make Sanjaya keep performing every week. And I mean cruel to Sanjaya. No matter what it looks like, I cannot imagine anybody who would enjoy or look forward to being basically humiliated so severely in front of millions of people every week. I give Sanjaya big kudos for just showing up and doing his best, in the face of it. His only other option would be to quit. Not sure I wouldn't.

As to wanting to see Sanjaya get a recording contract, why? To prove anybody can get one? Big whoop. The votefortheworst.com folks ought to focus that time and energy on doing something positive.

Finally the ride is over for Sanjaya! It was fun while it lasted;)
I still think all those voted off so far, would not have been the American Idol anyway. Thank the lord Blake & Lakecia are still hanging tough.

Well now Sanjaya can look forward to the talk show rounds & the Idol tour.

Whoooooooooooooo! Order has been restored to the universe.

Couldn't believe that Blake was in the bottom three, however. Hope that doesn't happen again.

Buh-bye, Sanjaya!! Buh-bye!!!!
