Lottery position thread

Seventh pick?

It got us Lionel Simmons, Walt Williams, Bobby Hurley and Jason Williams, none of which were exceptional picks for their years, but we weren't very good at picking in those days. We made so-so choices at every draft position. Billy Owens was a bad #3. Pervis Ellison was a bad #1. Kenny Smith was an OK #6, but it wasn't OK that we picked him over Reggie Miller, Kevin Johnson, etc. Harold Pressley was pretty much what you'd expect at #18, but getting Dennis Rodman, Mark Price or Arvydas Sabonis would have been better.

In the past, Petrie has excelled mainly at not picking anyone in the first round that would totally suck. When you're always picking late, that's a very positive thing. His only lottery pick (1998) was JWill, who he took over Dirk Nowitzki, Paul Pierce, Larry Hughes, and Rashard Lewis, among others. With the early second-round pick, he took Jerome James over Rafer Alston, Cuttino Mobley, Brad Miller, Mike James, Earl Boykins, etc.

This draft is not unlike the loaded '98 draft. I don't mind the idea of #6, #7 or #8, I just hope that Petrie is able to do a better job this time.

Don't remind me about the Jason Williams pick. I was gung ho on both Pierce and Nowitzki that year. I saw Pierce play against UCLA and was quite impressed by his quickness and fluidity. Amazingly, there were people that thought he might be a bust. Nowitzki I saw in the McDonalds All American game. I don't remember him taking one outside shot in that game, but I do remember he took the ball to the hole over and over and over again, showed great toughness (he got fouled repeatedly), and made his free throws. I was so impressed, I called him in as my pick to the local radio station. That year I think Petrie buckled to the fan and media pressure on the need for a point guard.

"That year I think Petrie buckled to the fan and media pressure on the need for a point guard."

I don't think Petrie picked J-Will -- a guy who got kicked off his own college team and didn't even show up to the draft -- because he buckled to fan and media pressure.

And I'm not going to deride the pick either. We got an exciting talent for 3 years who just didn't live up to his potential, made the playoffs ever year he was at the point, and sold him high to get Bibby.

If that's considered a nightmare pick, Petrie has spoiled us.

A nightmare pick is when your team takes Sam Bowie over both Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, or when you pick Len Bias at #2 and he's dead a couple of days later. Not picking the best guy available isn't the same thing. GMs are human, it happens all the time.

OK, maybe he didn't buckle under fan pressure, maybe he decided on his own accord to go against his golden rule "best player available." When asked whether Williams was the best player available, Petrie did a good tap dance. If he thought he was bpa, then he would have just flat out said it. But he didn't. He really danced when people asked him about Pierce. I forgot about J Will's checkered past. Maybe Artest wasn't a Maloof mistake after all...

Go Charlotte! They beat the Wiz tonight, giving them one less woss than us.:)
Charlotte is 29-46 now, we're 30-43, I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

Tonight's nail-biter of a lin leaves us still in 9th place, with Minnesota breathing right down our collective neck. Indiana, Seattle and Minnesota had easy lins, but we gained a little lead on NO/OKC, who wost to the Bucks. With this brutal competition, we've gotta keep it up! No more wosses, we need a perfect linning streak!

Seattle had a 19-point lin over San Antonio tonight, so we didn't catch up with them, they're still half a game ahead.

That really sucks. I wish we could've had a lin by that much.

When will management play the young guns? This is getting frustrating. I don't care if Musselman is trying to get wins to save his career, who cares what he wants? If he won't play the young guys then just fire him.

You're assuming he's been told to play the young guys, which I think is an erroneous assumption.

And we do NOT want to fire him now. You fire a coach this late in the season, and there seems to be motivation for the team to regroup and win. That would be the worst thing that could happen.

We may eke out a couple of more wins but we're into pretty decent draft territory.

We're checking the win column...we can pull even if we both just lose out all games...The W column is what matters at this point...if the blazers, sixers, bobcats can each win 2 more games than us here on out and seattle just 1 we could get the 5th seed.

EDIT** heh found somethign cool. Was forthe 2006 draft.. a calculator w/ a simulator on the picks. you can run it twenty times or whtever.

I looked through this thread (not very well though)...

Anyone have out top 3 changed in % if we finished 6th/7th/8th/9th/10th? I am assuming we will be one of the above, probally 8th if I had to guess....

It's up to management to make the call to play the youngins. Anybody who is unhappy with the situation should contact management and offer your opinion on the matter.

If you scroll down to almost the bottom of the following URL, there's a nice chart for the 2006 draft, the same odds apply this year. When you're as late as 8th, you have a very poor chance of getting in the top 3, an excellent chance of going 8th, a poor chance of going 9th, and an extremely remote chance of going 10th.

#6/#7/#8 I like our chances at getting a top three pick!!! I ran lot of those simulations and out of 20 it seemed at least 2 or 3 times out of the 20 we would get a top 3 pick. :) I like those odds.

GO CHARLOTTE! GO WALLACE! Boy's almost got himself a triple double after a HUGE night last night when they beat the Wiz. Playing the Wiz again tonight, they've got about one minute and 7 points between back to back upsets. Wallace is turning into a huge player. Love it.

Yeah, Charlotte won! Next up: Philly vs. NY, a 2-point game at the start of the 4th. NY is close to catching up with us, but we're also close to passing up Philly. GO '6ERS (I think)! Seattle and NO/OKC are also very close, early in the 3rd. NO will never catch up with us, but tonight could be the night when we pass up Seattle. GO SONICS!

More amazing things about thast game were 1) Antonio Daniels coming back from the dead to notch 18pts 17ast, abd 2) Walter Hermann, who I thought was scrub city earlier this year, just continuing to blossom bigtime.

Philly just wost to the Knicks, so if we lin tonight, we will tie Philly and keep our lead on NY.

NO/OKC has a 5-point lead on Seattle with 3 minutes to play, so that one may not go our way. Come on, Sonics! You can do it!

EDIT: Sonics got a lin in OT, so the Kings really need a lin tonight. Tying Philly and approaching Charlotte are still victories we could barely have hoped for a few weeks ago, and Seattle will have more chances yet to wose.

And Portland now with the woss to tie us in wosses. 6th place is now within reach. This could be a good night if we don't go and pull off a silly little upset.

Great night in terms of the lottery! We moved into a 8th/9th tie with Philly, and, quite unexpectedly, Portland wost to Utah, putting us into a tie with them as well! So we went from 9th to 7th/8th/9th tonight. A relative gain of only one game and we'll be all alone in 6th, and even 5th might be possible! :D

Lets hope the Bobcats, Sixers, and Blazers keep winning. Then hopefully we can lin against Utah(who should be mad they lost to a depleted Portland team) and those teams can get some confidence/winning momentum going.

Hmmm, I guess it's time for another lottery rundown.

#1: Memphis 19-57
#2: Boston 23-51
#3: Milwaukee 26-48
#4: Atlanta 27-48
#5: Charlotte 30-46
#6: Seattle 30-45
#7/#8/#9: Philly/Portland/Sacramento 30-44
#10/#11: Minnesota/NY 31-43
#12: Indiana 32-42
(Orlando, NJ, NO/OKC and Golden State have 34-36 wins, and are out of luck.)
