2006 Vegas Summer League (merged)

Amazingly, I had a nice, bright Chinese-American woman for a boss a long time ago. Born, raised and educated through college here, but had a Chinese accent so thick I had trouble understanding her. Spoke Chinese at home her whole life.

As to Qunicy having A Haitian accent, my ex-inlaws lived in South Carolina. I'd go visit for a week or two and come back with a halfway decent southern accent. :D I'm sure Quincy's parents speech affected his.

Back to the topic, I think its nice to have some foreign players on the summer roster. You never know where you'll find something you need.;)

Slightly off-topic - How many of you were here when Sean Chen tried out with the Kings and actually played for them during their trip to China?

VF, the one playing with the Kings' team in China was Liu Wei. Sean Chen was a year or 2 before that, the guy who has sick hops and was dubbed "Prince of Dunk" ! :D

Sean was a 6-5 SG who played an average game and was at NBDL level maybe but was quite a ways from NBA. I think the NBA are encouraging the Kings (and others) to gradually bring in Chinese and Asia players as a marketing item and for them to gain experience in the NBA style to take back home. Did same with a Japanese PG last year in VSL.

Another example this year is Dahglas, who I believe is from Jordan. Not the first middle easterner but first from Jordan.

To be honest, the thing I remember most about Chen is the tremendous traffic the board had as soon as he was linked to the Kings. I was actually a little relieved when he was cut because we would never have been able to handle the influx of fans...

:p

i wasn't a member then but all i remember about him was when the kings played in china and they were walking out of the tunnel, he was the first one to run out while the rest of the team stayed back :D

Well, apparently I was wrong about the name of the Chinese player who actually went to China. Sean Chen was the year before. Liu Wei was the young man who got to lead the Kings out of the tunnel in front of something like 80,000 screaming Chinese fans.

:)

Well, more chance and time for the better players then. Hope they get more chances.
That's what I kind of figured the reason is. No sense in taking along players you don't think really have any chance at all with the team. I guess its possible they could be picked up to play on some other team's summer league roster that way.

Green, Benson and Blankson cut from Kings Summer League squad. (seen on Kings.com site this morning).

I know little about any of those guys, except someone on here liked Benson. But its probably for the best so that we can take longer looks at some of the higher profile guys.

This is from the VSL official site, it looks like this interview was done shortly before the draft.

Player to Watch: Quincy Douby
Quincy Douby NBA Workout

Dennis Rogers
drogers@vegassummerleague.com

TVSL's Dennis Rogers recently caught up with sharp shooting Quincy Douby at a recent NBA workout. Douby, a prolific scoring shooting guard from Rutgers, averaged 25.4 points (sixth in the nation), 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists in his junior season. The three-year player from Rutgers was named first-team all-BIG EAST and earned All-America honors from the AP (honorable mention), CollegeHoops.net (fourth team) and Collegeinsider.com. Scored a career-high 41 points against Syracuse on 15-32 shooting. He was named to the BIG EAST honor 10 times his junior season, more than any other player in the league. Douby is a terrific three point shooter with great range and has a great offensive game. He can be streaky at times, but when he is hot, he is deadly. His thin frame (6-3, 175 pounds) is not NBA ready, plus he plays more like a two guard than a point guard. Douby is projected to be picked anywhere from 20-27 in the first round of the draft.

(on his biggest strengths)
"I'm a really good shooter. When guys get double-teamed, they kick it out to me and (the shot) is automatic. I can knock that down consistently. I still have a lot to learn because I've only played organized ball for six years. I'm still developing as a player."
(on more of his strengths)
"I can slash, shoot and handle the ball. I feel like I can bring a lot to a team, and I still haven't finished developing as a player. This is only my sixth year playing organized ball, so I got a whole lot to learn still. I'm just trying to get the opportunity."
(on what he's trying to show during workouts)
"That I can handle the ball. I'm a little bit of a combo guard. I want to show that I'm a legit shooter and really good passer who can get people open shots. The best I've shot in workouts was when I was in Sacramento; I missed probably about two shots the whole workout (out of over 100). I was on fire and knocking everything down in every drill. I shot ridiculously. They told my agent they wanted to clap (during the workout)."
(on his outside shot)
"I feel mine is definitely up there with those players, especially with the way I had to shoot in games. Being the only scoring threat on my college team, I was seeing double teams, triple teams, box and ones, you name it."

New insight on why we picked him?
~~

I already know why we picked him - to have a spark combo-guard off the bench, not only sometimes to spell Bibby, but to improve our overall bench and get some shooting back on the team aside from Brad/Mike/Kevin.

I liked him at Cal, but not over the other guys we have. He is talented but is way physically underdeveloped, good hustle player though.

Indeed. I may have said something along the lines of thinking Benson would turn out to be a better NBA'er than Powe, but that's hardly lofty praise. ;)
