I can’t imagine Voinea’s goal was ever to legitimately get the bronze outright. Well, except as a longshot backup plan if Chiles’ score was allowed to stand so Romania still had a chance to grab hardware. MAYBE as a wild gambit on the off chance the IOC announced “Screw it; all three of you get medals. Everyone can shut up now.”
To me, Voinea, or perhaps more accurately her domineering former gymnast mother, excessively complaining online about how the judges wronged her was part of a coordinated effort to strip Chiles of her medal and give it to Barbuso.
Reason being, whether she was truly out of bounds or not, she didn’t challenge it in real time at the meet, probably (if her team even realized the call was questionable, because her teammate was inline to get bronze at the time. But suddenly when the American is boosted into the spot, crushing the soul of that same teammate for the world to see, and a day or two passed, THEN that out of bounds call was a scandal! A scandal to add more fuel to the fire that the judges had wronged Romania, specifically in favor of the evil Americans, and the IOC needed to give Romania and their gloriously rich gymnastics history something to make up for it.
