Players that I would target with the 9th pick:

The difference is Bamba has like a an unreal wingspan and is a true 7 footer. If Jones weren't in the tweener range Bagley is in and the size of Bamba he might be a top 5 pick.
Bamba is no where near the athlete that Kai Jones is. I don't know how good Jones will be, but I would bet that he will have a better career than Bamba.

I still really believe in Bamba's upside. He needs to stay healthy and get starters minutes. His production right now is at a good clip, at around a Mutombo level with better scoring.
The issue with Bamba is his lateral agility, which these playoffs has shown is a necessity for a defense-forward big man in the modern game. Gobert has all that wingspan and was getting absolutely murdered by the Clippers the second they went small.

I haven't watched much of Bamba recently so I'm not sure if he's gotten better in that area but I remember him possessing your typical classic big man gait.

All true, but Bamba does have 3 point shooting potential that could put him in a Brook Lopez category as a 3 point threat on offense to make up for some of it.

I watched the vid from 45m on. Give him props for being willing to take a position on players. My thoughts: he loves Bouknight (that's a plus; I really think Bouknight may go top 5). Also loves Jalen Johnson (my thoughts: it's legal in CA. LOLZZZ. If Bouknight and Barnes are not there, the Kings should take him). Not high on Barnes, which is a damn headscratcher. Hes not really high on Moody or Wagner (I understand why). Sees Kispert as a high level role player (sure at 18; no at 9).
I've feel like I've been seeing and hearing a lot of people recently talking about Bouknight being top 5 on their big boards. He and Barnes seem to keep jumping up people's boards, which leaves me wondering how far Kuminga will fall. Probably not to 9, so won't necessarily matter, but picks 5-14 could be really intriguing.

I have narrowed it down to 10 players that could possibly be our ninth pick. I realize that's quite a few considering that normally a pick in the lottery would be down to maybe two or three players. But this is an unusual draft in that the talent runs deep into the first rd. If you were to take a look at all the mock drafts out there you'll see a player going at number 9 or 10 on one mock, and the same player going at 18 or 19 in another one. I've seen Ayo Dosunmu in the mid to late teens, and I saw one mock that had him at 30. I think he's talented enough to be a lottery pick, but there are only 14 of them.

Anyway, my ten choices are as follows, and I have them in the order I like them:

1. Moses Moody
2. Jalen Johnson
3. Corey Kispert
4. Kai Jones
5. Franz Wagner
6. Usman Garuba
7. Isaiah Jackson
8. Davion Mitchell
9. Jaden Springer
10. Tre Mann

Obviously if Scottie Barnes or Keon Johnson should slide down to us, they would have to be considered. But I think both will be gone by then, and it's possible that my number one pick, Moody will be gone as well, but I'm hopeful he won't. So without further ado:

Moses Moody: SG/SF, 6'6", 185 Lb's, 7'0" Wingspan, Freshman, 18.6 years old, Arkansas.
32.8 mpg - 17.0 ppg - 43.3% fgp - 37.1% 3pp - 82.8% ftp - 5.8 rpg - 1.8 apg - 1.1 stl's

Moody is one of my favorite players in the draft, and he was fun to watch. He's an excellent athlete who is projected by most scouts as a 3 and D player. Moody is the type of player that fits in on just about every team, but is a perfect fit on the Kings. Number one, he defends. He projects to be a lock down defender. He has great length which allows him to play and defend three positions. He has excellent BBIQ. He seldom forces things and takes what's there. Sometimes at the end of the game you'll look at the box score and he'll have 25 pt's, and you can't remember him scoring that many times.

He's a good passer and at times was the primary ball handler for the Vol's. He was in fact, the primary everything for his team. He's a good shooter and has an effortless looking jump shot. While 37.1% is very respectable, for a 20 game period from Dec 3rd to Feb 13th, he shot right at 40%. Moody is a player that I think will be a better offensive player in the NBA than he was in college. He was the primary scorer at Arkansas, and if someone else had been able to score, Moody would have probably averaged 7 assists a game. Toward the last part of the season, and in the tournament, every team he played had their defense set to stop him from scoring. As a result some of his percentages took a dive.

Moody won't have that problem in the NBA, or on a team like the Kings, where he might be the 3rd or 4th option. He won't see many doubles like he did at Arkansas. Also, they have that testy defensive 3 second rule in the lane, and Moody loves to attack the basket. He also has a deadly mid-range game with pullup step backs, and floaters. As you note by his almost 6 boards a game, he's an excellent rebounder. Moody plays with an intensity you'll love. He probably needs to add some muscle, and tweak his ball handling a tad, but overall, he's ready to step on an NBA floor and contribute. He's a tough kid, and a workaholic. To me, he's a can't miss prospect, and hey, at still 18 years of age, he might grow another inch or two.

Watched Kispert in the finals - no way, no how. If the Kings pick Kispert, well, it will just be Kangz. The Kings dont need another shooter who can't/won't play defense. I didn't think Moody was an excellent athlete either. Willing to go with the pick though- he seems crafty. Kai Jones would be ok as a swing too. I like Wagner as a "safe" pick - aka higher floor, lower ceiling. HIs defense is superior to Kispert. Johnson would be fine too

I haven't watched him play until the tournament and as soon as you mentioned that he was a good defender, I was on board. Out of the ten prospects you mentioned, how many of them are good defenders? Also, didn't he go to Arkansas? not Tennessee
This is why I like Wagner - he's already keyed in on defense. No need to motivate - he's already branded for defense - love his shadowing and itch to try to block.

I don’t see Hayward. I thought Luka would be Hayward from day one, because of his handles. I don’t see that type of handle on Wagner and don’t think he ever will develop those types of handle.

Wagner is right side dominant. He’s not Bagley, who is a one armed player, but 90% of Wagner’s drives and finishes are on his right hand. Because he is a one sided player, he doesn’t have the zig n zagging that the other two players do. I do like his game speed though, where he’s able to use an elongated step plus a hang dribble to either pass or pivot and go for a lay up on drives. My bet, he ends up playing like Joe Ingles.
Joe Ingles isn't a bad pick at 9th. I like Wagner, and wouldn't mind the Kings drafting him at all. Sold on his defense. He may not be a top athlete - but he appears to be a hard worker on defense. He immediately fills in depth at 3 behind Barnes and frontline.

The games that I watched Wagner closely, he just didn't pop. Watching more film on him recently have me seeing more of his talent and I now project him to be a Joe Ingles type. I don't see the handles that Hayward or Luka has. The main difference between Giddey and Wagoner is their handle, which is why I project him higher. Wagoner the better defender (elite? I don't see that) while Giddey the more multi-faceted offensive threat.

As for Kispert, I've seen him about 6 times. Against WCC and against high level D1 athletes. Against the WCC, Gonzaga pretty much ran through everyone. Better athletes, a ton of spacing, because opposing WCC teams were scrambling to deal with the stache, Ayai, and Suggs. Against UCLA and Baylor, he couldn't get his shot off and was targeted on defense (especially by UCLA). He's essentially Jason Kapono and should be a second rounder. Some mocks have rightfully dropped him into the mid/late teens. Should be lower. I think Juzang and Jaquez are better long term prospects than Kispert--and I think Juzang and Jaquez will end up being something like what Andres Nocioni was (that is, average, at best, NBA wings).

As for Donsumu, he's plug and play from day 1 and should be drafted ahead of Kispert. Like a full round ahead. Being an older player is a concern, but if the Kings can get two solid contracts from a late first that would still be levels greater than what they've gotten from Bags and other high lotto picks.
Yep, I watched Kispert in the last 2 Final 4 games - he's a late first rounder at best. Kings picking him would not make my day.

I have a hunch that Keon Johnson might be the guy the Kings select - if the team keeps the pick and K.J. is still there.
I hope not. I'm not real high on Keon Johnson. I think he will be a good defender, but has a long way to go on offense to be a good NBA player. I think he will be one of the guys who slides on draft day.

Kuminga would be excellent and a gift from the basketball deities. Mobley would be the ideal player for the Kings in the draft for positional need.

Keon Johnson might be the best athlete in the draft, but yes, that's certainly not everything. 41.5" vertical leap - is elite, edges Fox.

I get the love for KJ, but he scares me. And from reports, he scares other GMs as well. Dude has the widest range of opinions, per the draftx guys and some of the Athletic guys. If he hits, he's elite. Dude has sudden, game changing athleticism--Baron Davis, DRose, Anthony Edwards type of athleticism. The reason why I wouldn't consider him at 9 is his handles. He's straight line. Beats players with his athleticism. He needs to develop above average handles to become elite. Right now, it's probably two ticks below average (where Benny Mac has been since he's entered the league). I said this in another post some time ago, but I tend overweight handles (including game speed, real time innovation while dribbling) and underweight shooting (most players can improve their shooting; not elite, but improve). Handles, IMO, is much harder to improve.

There is no doubt that he is a great athlete, and he uses it to his advantage on defense. On offense, he is not a good outside shooter. His handles need a lot of work and he isn't all that good at creating for others. He is a project that you hope develops in the next few years. Honestly, I would rather take my chances with his teammate Jaden Springer than with Johnson. Now I'm not advocating that we pick Springer wih the 9th pick, but I do think he will have the bettet NBA career.

And he's a gift I don't expect the Kings to be granted, but it's not outside of the realm of possibility. If Barnes and Bouknight push Kuminga out of the top 6, and the Warriors pass on him for a player ready to produce for them now, all it would take is one team (Orlando) to pass on him (again) for him to be there at 9.

I'm going to go wake up from my dream now.

The Athletics most recent mock from this morning. Jalen Johnson is still my guy. His passing and ability to facilitate the offense as a point forward coupled with Fox and Hali would be nice. Also intrigued by Giddey (see above) and Bouknights scoring ability and ball handling.

9. Sacramento Kings – Kai Jones, C, Texas, 20 years old

No change here. I’m still very high on Jones and think he’s a perfect fit here.

Previous analysis: This is probably too high for Jones, and he’s more likely to be somewhere near the end of the lottery, but I think he’s exactly what the Sacramento Kings need. He’s top 10 on my big board, and he fills a position the Kings have struggled to fill consistently, all the way back to selecting Willie Cauley-Stein in 2015. Jones can anchor a good defensive unit for extended stretches. He’s basically Bam Adebayo in terms of his versatility and effectiveness on that end.

Offensively, he’s a guy who should be able to stretch the floor some and wreck the rim when he’s around it. He was surprisingly bad as a pick-and-roll big man this past season, turning the ball over a lot. Jones doesn’t have the best hands, so that’s where a lot of the fumbles happen for him. When he has the ball, he has the ability to drive right to the basket, but there isn’t an array of moves from him. It will be a lot of attacking a closeout defender. With Richaun Holmes hitting free agency, the Kings need a new big man.

Is a trade possible? The Kings really need to keep trying to add significant players to the mix, and they can still grab one at No. 9. Maybe packaging this pick and Buddy Hield can grab them someone to help end that playoff drought, but it’s doubtful.

This is where I'm at with Johnson. Offensively he doesn't really have anything to hang his hat on. His best offensive move right now is cutting off ball to attack the basket or get in position for a sort jumper or turnaround.

There's a lot of upside there and I like the idea of improving team defense but he's also too undersized to swing to the 3 on a team that has (for now at least) Fox, Haliburton, Hield, and Wright as it's guard rotation.

I think it's a near lock that Cunningham, Mobley, Green, Barnes, and probably Suggs will be gone before the Kings pick.

The next five guys on my draft board (roughly in order since I keep vacillating on a couple guys) are:

Jalen Johnson
James Bouknight
Franz Wagner
Jonathan Kuminga
Moses Moody

Moody and Wagner are safer picks. Neither is guaranteed to succeed in the NBA but both have two way potential that should make them good 3&D guys.

Jalen Johnson has shooting, toughness, and turnover issues (plus the questions about leaving Duke) but he was better than advertised defensively and is an important archetype in today's NBA as a big playmaker.

Bouknight is a smooth 3 level scorer who (like Johnson) should be better in the NBA than college. He's not a great fit with Fox and Haliburton (and probably necessitates a Hield trade) but I think he's too talented to pass up. He will definitely need to improve as a playmaker in the NBA but he's a good (if not overly switchable) defender. It's those last two reasons that have Jalen Johnson above him for me.

Kuminga scares me. All the physical tools but he shot poorly everywhere (39% overall, under 25% from three 62.5% from the line) except right at the basket. He passed the ball well for a big wing, was a pretty good rebounder and flashed some two way potential due to his size and speed but he's far from a sure thing. I think I'd almost rather have him be off the board than have him fall to the Kings. IMO he's the riskiest potential top 10 pick followed by Keon Johnson.

Giddy and Sengun have some really intriguing skills but also some very noticable warts.

I'm personally not high on Kai Jones or Davion Mitchell.

I do like Ziaire Williams but he's another upside play who needs significant development to both his game and body to succeed in the NBA. If the Kings were to trade for a mid to late first (maybe Bagley to OKC for #18) I'd be onboard with grabbing Williams there.

Maybe I'm missing something on Jones, but I'd take Sengun over him for sure. Much, much more offensive production (and more offensive potential as well IMO) and I don't see Jones as a defensive anchor. I'm not sure he's big enough to be a starting big.

He's switchable like Bam, but Adebayo came into the NBA 20lbs heavier and with a better frame. Jones looks more like a slightly taller Jerami Grant than Bam Adebayo - at least to me.

Also bigs with below average hands are always a red flag for me.

Kings don't need Suggs at all, and I think he's a bit overrated....I don't think he'll ever be as good as Fox. Not even sure he'll be as good as Halliburton. The Kings need a front court player. Kuminga,, Barnes, Johnson, Wagner, Jones, Moody, - any of them. Kings don't need Bouknight. - he looked ok maybe for a teens pick. Aside from Green (who won't be available and reminds me of Westbrook in tenacity), I think they should pick front court. -3 or 4.

I think the Kings greatest need is all star caliber talent. I don't care what position it's from. If they think they have a prospect who can become an all star available and don't pick them for fit or positional need, that's a bad move in my opinion.

yeah idk I am very skeptical in drafting another big but I like what I see from Jones. Then again, I liked what I saw from WCS and they said a lot of the same things about his switching ability before the draft so I am kinda skeptical to take a big if we cannot develop them properly. I’m more concerned with his attitude and personality, is he another Willie and Bagley where he is more concerned with himself or is he closer to Halliburton and Fox as a team guy who is willing to share the spotlight and do what’s best for the team

Small-ish athletes that can't shoot and don't show a great aptitude to run the show are a not something I think most GM's want to gamble on if they don't really need to gamble on that upside. For a team deeper than they should be in the lotto and starting over it might be worth the risk, but the Kings are not that team. They have a hole that has been almost an eternal bane so this is their chance. They got really lucky to come out with a chance at something useful so they better not blow it.

I think there is zero chance the Kings draft Kispert. Look at the players Monte obtained at the deadline. Harkless, Delon, TD. He’s going to get a wing who is switchable and long on D. Defense and length is a priority.
Unless he's thinking of a poor mans Buddy replacement, haha.
