Kings trade JT, Nik and Landry to Sixers (renamed)

The Lakers have whiffed on all their big plans. No LMA. No Love. So now what are they going to do??? they are going to say "Hey Vlade, you asked for it - you got it... Clarkson, Randle, Russell, two top 10 protected future firsts... was there anything else???". And Vlade is going to swallow hard - and do it.

Because one of his best friends in the league is on our team... because he'll be playing with, according to him, the best young player in the game, because he wants to be here and sees a future. He didn't have that in Boston towards the end or even in Dallas.

Rondo is a hard headed winner. He doesn't play for a paycheck, but plays, like Cuz, to win. For players like that, fit, leadership, proper usage, and team-wide buy in toward a common goal are key. To me, he is an excellent candidate to pull a Rudy Gay and all the sudden come back to form, and better, when in the right situation. HE WANTS TO BE HERE.
So, on a team that says they need better three point shooting, were going to sign a player thats a bad three point shooter. Well Done!

Reading Dave's tweets, I get a sense of disappointment. I also get the sense that we may be shooting ourselves in the foot with Rondo. Just agree on 8-9 million with incentives to reach 10 (more $$ if you average 1.5 steals per game etc.). Cousins has openly said he believes Rondo is the best PG in the game (he isn't, but he still can pass that rock) and Rudy has been pitching for him. You sign him, all of a sudden we look like this:

PG: Rondo/Collison/Ray
SG: Ben/Nik <---- still a major weakness unless Ben's neurons finally decide they have a purpose
SF: Rudy/Omri
PF: WCS/JT/Landry (WCS will be starting at some point this season)
C: Cousins/JT

That is a solid starting 5, though shooting is suspect especially if Ben proceeds to brick open kick-outs like he has his entire career thus far. We are also 8 deep with Collison-JT-Omri on the bench and who knows, some low-key free agents/trades and we can be 9-10 deep. That's something to work with regardless and it looks loads better than last season.

In order for PHX to get into the Aldridge sweepstakes they will not need to clear considerable cap space. No room right now.

We can absorb quite a bit of Bledsoes Contract. Trade Nik for Bledsoe?
Aldridge would have to tell them I'm signing before they even think of moving Bledsoe.

We know that simply adding WCS is not going to turn our sorry 29 win team into a playoff team. So either we waste our last years with Boogie and watch him walk (or force his way out), or we try and build a team around him. Could things go south with Rondo? No doubt. But things will be much worse if Cousins leaves. We are talking complete rebuild again. I think you absolutely have to gamble to build a winner around Cousins.
What if, signing Rondo ends up hastening Cousins departure because he can't get along with him. Look, if we sign Rondo, I'll be on board and pray I'm dead wrong about the outcome. But his signing scares me, and I'm not sure I see the need.

Since the FA wings are disappearing from the market overnight, has anyone thought about the possibility of trading with Toronto for Terrence Ross? There's been a lot of buzz since the playoffs about the Raptors looking to trade him and giving DeMarre Carroll $15 million a year seems to back up that intention. They have cap space and they need shooting and frontcourt depth so maybe we could do a Stauskas/Thompson for Ross deal where they absorb the cap hit on Thompson and swap out Ross for a SG with elite 3pt potential to backup DeRozan?
If Stauskas has elite three point potential, then why don't we just keep him?

This is the downside of laughing at the Lakers for striking out on the big FA's (Jordan, Love, Aldridge, etc) is that now the Cousins/Lakers rumors will be coming hard again

I just want to say if that article is true and Rondo is with the program in Sacramento AND the Kings can stay mostly healthy. The Kings make the Playoffs next season.

Nobody else in the league is giving Rondo 8, let alone 10. They Kings would be bidding against themselves. If Rondo wants to sign for 7.5 with a player option for 10 on the second year, it's not a great bet but fine. Giving him 10 on the first year because his agent is claiming that he's got an offer of 9.25 from another team and all things being equal he'd go there. Call his bluff.

Rondo is taking risk as well with this contract. That's why he wants 10 for this year. If he plays like crap again this year, he's playing for peanuts the rest of his career and his agents are trying to get a desprate team with a rookie front office to bid against itself.
I'm fine with that, but I want the option to be a team option. The last thing I want is to be stuck with a player for two or three years that doesn't fit. I'm done with having players like Landry or whomever sitting on the bench and getting paid for nothing. Personally, I don't want to sign Rondo, but if I were it would be a one year deal for under 7 mil. If he doesn't want that, fine, see ya!

These kinds of obscenely-overpaid contracts are changing the entire landscape of the NBA roster game.

Rookie deals are now WAY more advantageous, if middling vet talent gets over $10 million a year now.

There may be room now for a Billy Beane-esque rookie-centric GM to stock up completely on rookies on the gamble that some will become good, and others will simply put up OK numbers (comparable to these overpaid vets).
Maybe the 76ers have the right idea after all?

What I don't get is - how are these other teams managing to pay these guys so much? For example, it's not like the Nets had a cheap roster last year, but they somehow can find $20 million a year for BLopez?

For real

im not understanding how the Cavs can give Love & Thompson a combined 190m, still be able to pay Kyrie, still be able to give LeBron a new contract, and then still fill out the rest of the roster

It seems more than just something pertaining to Rondo. I don't think not signing Rondo brings more drama. Has to be something we're doing. Trade?

The amount of overpaying going on is far beyond what I imagined. I knew to expect that players weren't even going to look in our direction but damn, poopoo hurts to see us just sitting there with no serious talks going on.
not really. If people want to all get the $15mil deals to roleplayers out of their systems, I'll cheerfully pick through what figures to be a big stack of guys left over afterward. Not enough teams have that kind of cap room for this pace to keep up. So I'm all for letting other teams burn the alcohol off the top here, and then trying to slip in with some reasonable deals.

Can we ever just do something smoothly? Ever? EVER?

I'd say the first is smoke but no fire (yet?) on Rondo.

The prediction of more drama coming, tired of what's going on with the Kings, and flat out getting off twitter for a while (logging off) would suggest something else brewing. Perhaps something went down inside with the Kings. Or he's aware of another story coming up because the Kings have been contacted about it.

We'll see. But, when a twitter addicted cheerleader logs off and says buckle up for more drama, it appears another bump in the road may be upcoming.

I'm not sure about the relationships between the parties but there was also this:
