Rudy Gay to play at the 4?

Chill guys. With some reports saying they'd like to move Cuz to PF it's pretty clear what the FO is doing. We're gonna have a 5 PF lineup!

I'm gonna give the coach w/ Karl support to try different things. Clearly the combinations that we have used just don't work. Chill folks.
I remember the beggining of the season was overpowering guys was working just fine. Why is the solution with this FO always to go small?

It's not like I think karl is suggesting Rudy is going to play the majority of his minutes at pf. I'd hust like to see any person associated with this team, new and old, acknowledge the one advantage we have with power players.

Please, no.

Can we just be a normal team for once?
Sorry, no. That's a fireable offense in these parts. Because we is REAL smarts you know? That's how cum we're gonna miss the playoffs for a decade straight -- we're 3 steps ahead man! Maybe 10 steps! We're so far ahead we just skipped the entire playoff era entirely, and are straight back to the lottery. Woot!

i'm no fan of rudy at the 4 as any kind of long term strategy, but honestly, i have no problem with karl using the rest of the season as an opportunity to discover the flexibilities and limitations of his roster. winning went out the door in mid-december, and training camp 2015 is a ways off, as is the hiring of a permanent assistant coaching staff. karl might as well use this time to find out that playing rudy at PF is likely not how he'll be best utilized in the future...

Maaaaybe, we're trading JT without getting a PF in return?

Karl has to work with what he got. Last time he coached he led a team of nobodies + Lawson to 57 wins in the west.

Do I like the idea? No. But if anyone can make it work, it's Karl.

Now, here's to hoping PDA gets us another PF in the off-season!

I don't even know what that's supposed to mean.

If it means for 5 mins per half he'll run out Omri/Rudy/JT together, not really a problem with our current roster. We're pretty limited as soon as Cuz hits the bench. But if it means something else, I'll be asking some questions. We actually should be running more and trying to get easy baskets when Cuz is on the bench with our current roster and Rudy/Omri could get up and down for a few mins each half.

Either way, rumors suggest we're looking for a new starting PF so I'm waiting to see who that's going to be. I've heard a defensive shotblocker, also heard a stretch 4 but whomever we acquire will tell us a fair amount of our direction going forward.

I'm not too against this idea, it would be a matchup nightmare for other teams and as long as Gay knows how not to leave bigs wide open in pick and roll situations this team will be fine defensively until they meet Randolph and Gasol that is.

The last deadline or two has left me dead inside. I'll believe a trade is coming when I see it. Getting rid of Sessions or any piece of the PF glut would fantastic but if a team is really interested in any of that I'll believe that when I see it too.

If Gay is going to play PF then that tells me moving those movable pieces for a real stretch 4 isn't going to happen. That should tell you how badly valued those pieces are.

You would think the advanced stats guys would have noticed the ranking for our starting 5 and looked somewhere else to try to fix things with experiments.

I don't see the matchup nightmare. Gay isn't really a quick 3 so he won't have that advantage of some small ball 4's. He doesn't shoot exceptionally well from outside so he's not really a stretch 4. He's not a tough and versatile defender.

He's at his best when he can overpower 3's. He loses most of his advantages playing the 4.

The way I understood it is he might play Rudy at the 4 a bit more than he was before. Against some teams for limited minutes to stretch productivity for the current bench, etc.? Sure. More than that, no thanks.

I think he is looking at the talent his first day at coach and seeing what he can do to maximize the overall effectiveness of the team. But like Brick said, going back to what was winning you games at the beginning of the season might be a darn good way to start.

I have a feeling that Karl is tending towards Denver Karl and not Seattle Karl, and I don't know that the implications are great for DMC. I guess we will see where this all leads soon enough.

And please everyone Karl is not going to have Rudy guarding Randolph when we have Thompson available.

This will be a pick and choose situation.
But why can't they ever pick and choose to play to our best guy's strengths. It's always go small. Play versatile ball. Positionless basketball. The only responses to questions about our size and smash mouth advantages are that our guys can also play fast. From day one that was the message and regardless of what happens on the court, they just continue to spout the same stuff.

I liked your post because of the first two paragraphs. I do not agree with the third. I think what we'll see is Sacramento Karl. If nothing else, George Karl has shown over the years he can adjust to the situation. I have every faith that he will be great with and for DMC. The great coaches find a way to get the most out of the great players.
