Official PDA live radio thread

maybe have STH request their $$ back for the rest of the season? will that get their attention?
Many of mine have been distributed to partners - or else I would. I only have about 9 games left - all for sale below face value - with less than zero market interest. Should be chilling for FO but they are stubborn

Wow! 45 min after the interview sitting here with bajaden I now know what a 6 cup of coffee bing geels like! knees are tired from the jerking, conspiracy theories expounded, emotions run rampant, and a bit of reality has set in while the caffine high progresses to a hangover. What did I learn?

1. PDA admitted he screwed up on the Malone firing PR. ok
2. PDA did not (in the last 45 min at least) say what was THE PLAN for the Kings moving forward or if the FO even had one. not good.
3. Corbin coaching summer league and winning that championship with an open style of play may have been Malone's undoing (kudos to Uncia03 for hitting that nail on the head earlier in this thread).
4. The 5-1 and 9-6 start were a big false sense of accomplishment for a Kings Fan base soured on 8 years of a team gone down in the dumps. Historically, many lower echelon teams do well in the first 5-10 games of a season until the good teams they beat get their games going and climb all over the lower teams as they should.
5. Instant gratification sets in from the good but not entirely realistic start, and when the reality sets in on the Kings lack of a productive bench, lack of consistant play, conspiracy theories become major headlines and a fan base emulates the fireworks factory in Columbia in yesterdays news. But do we know Malone was to blame for this? didn't find out but it was casually insinuated.
6. PDA did not answer enough questions with definitive information, some because he could not and others he would not considering item 5 above and yet others with info we didn't want to hear. I thought "Jerry" asked the best direct question of the hour.e
7. Getting the Kings back on the right track will take time if the summer leagu play was the rfernce point. Nothing happens instantly progress takes time.

now I need a nap.

PDA admitted today that he botched his one press conference after the Malone firing, which has thrown gasoline onto the fan reaction to the tailspin created by the front office and ownership. The media was digging at PDA's presser, but nobody was hostile and based upon a national standard they didn't challenge much of what PDA said.

When Grant comes onto the radio and demands answers, you can safely assume that many the local media and perhaps some regional reporters are ready to ask PDA hard questions and actually follow up on and challenge answers that are pure spin -- if PDA was going to make himself available to the press. But he's not.

So instead of doing that, PDA chose a format that was hosted and moderated by a member of the media that's still in his corner. Because the follow up questions were going to be very limited, he could attempt to prepare and firmly stick to designated talking points. With optimum circumstances to repair the damage he's inflected, but he botched today as well. He both couldn't stick to the script and came off as evasive and condescending when he did.

Perhaps the locker room will gel, the Kings will win more often, and the water will get cool enough that PDA won't have everybody hating his guts. If this doesn't get better soon and you start to see sporadic booing after bad play or prolonged bad runs of play in losses on this home stand, the local media and fans are going to crush this guy.

Viveck already hired one coach before his GM. At this pace, PDA might be out when the season ends. I wouldn't hold my breath for a coaching change.

I woke up this morning to NO POWER. I had no power until about 20 minutes ago. I've spent that time trying to catch up on Twitter before I came here. As I read the comments, I knew I had to read our thread to get a better idea. (Twitter is NOT great for trying to catch up on stuff.)

When Dave tweeted the link, I started listening to the broadcast. Unfortunately (or maybe fortuitously) that doesn't seem to want to work either. I'm getting the idea the cosmos does not want me to hear PDA...)

Anyway, I'm reading this thread right now. I may have questions about some of your earlier posts so please forgive me if it seems like I'm bringing up stuff that's already been covered. Right now my first reaction is I feel like I got a shiny new bike at the beginning of the year that was stolen a couple of weeks ago. It was returned, but the front wheel is badly bent, the seat is missing, there are spokes kicked out of the wheels and the back tire is flat. I want to get a new bike or at least get this one fixed, but PDA has just told me it's fine and I shouldn't worry about it.

I have been mad as a Kings fan before (February 2005 comes to mind). I've been disgusted as Kings fan (the WCF come to mind). I do not think, however, I have ever felt so lost and defeated. :(

I got an email a couple weeks ago explaining that I could buy the rest of the season at basically 50% off, on top of heavily discounting the rest of December (40% off). I knew at that moment that this FO was throwing the season down the drain. You don't truly expect to win, and then lower the price of entry. Maybe I'm wrong.

Your bicycle analogy is pretty spot on. I bet PDA would even tell you that it wasn't working right before it was stolen too.

If defense slows down the game, I'd imagine they'll have extra energy to push through the closing minutes of a game. Frantically running up and down the court doesnt seem conducive to finishing strong.
Just because the game slows down does not mean you're not working hard. This is where conditioning comes into play from practice.

Is that really all PDA said? "Come on." For real? Real compelling argument right there PDA, sign me up for season tickets right now....wow, how extremely delusional and shortsighted of a response that is.
They really underestimated the kings fans, PDA came out and made himself look like a D-bag today. PDA and his boy toy keith Brooks need to go

What I got on the interview today is a guy who is way over his head as GM and should step down before damaging the team even more, the fans, players and the media do not respect PDA, he is better fit as a assistant somewhere not the front man, he cannot handle the heat and it showed.

True. But honestly it isn't even just Gay and Cousins. Jason Thompson is a post defender and rebounder. I know D'Alessandro has been trying to trade him (and I'm guessing that was a point of contention between he and Malone) but he's the starting PF and not suited for transition unless he's playing center really. Landry is not only not a transition guy, he's not a passer. He's on the squad for two more seasons after this one (and PDA signed him) and not suited for that kind of game.

Even McLemore and Collison aren't ideal for run-and-gun. DC can absolutely push the pace and attack the basket but he's a poor 3pt shooter considering our GM said he wants more treys attempted and it's part of creating spacing on breaks to drift to the 3point line. And with Ben, he's finally showing himself to be a potentially very good 3 and D guy who CAN elevate and score on fast breaks. But I don't want him attacking in the open court with the ball in his hands - he's too shaky with his handle and decision making. Stauskas has both of those things but right now can't finish at all and still doesn't have confidence in his shot. Reggie Evans? Not a fast break machine. Ray McCallum? Nope. Omri Casspi definitely attacks the basket and goes end to end and DWill probably is best in transition but are you really looking to build an offense that features two backup SFs only signed through this year?

After the broadcast someone asked about Malone establishing an identity and the Kings now back to looking like last year and the year before and the year before. And Pete's answer was essentially, "I love that Mike established that identity. And we'll get back to it, but we want to add much improved offense on top of that". Wow. My guess is we get neither. And at this point I don't expect us to improve on last year's 28 wins despite the hot start.
The point I'm trying to make is that the biggest acquisition in PDA's tenure - Rudy Gay - does not fit the running style. It's one thing to inherit Jason Thompson, a player not congruent with the running style . It's an entirely different thing to trade several players for a key guy in your running offense when he's not suited for the running style. This is where there is a total disconnect between the reality of the player and the vision he has for the team. At least with Collison, he got some of what was needed (he is fast), although a good case could be made that IT would be better in that style. Certainly, the FO in Phoenix thought IT would be a good fit in their running style. Again, there's a disconnect.

For me, the odd thing is that I agree with PDA about the ultimate goal moving the ball and having motion in the offense. I've long been a proponent of doing something similar to SA. But I completely disagree that we have the players to run that offense. I think Malone also didn't believe that the players he had were suited to have a running offense and that's where he and PDA butted heads. PDA didn't want to hear that the players he got for Malone couldn't run the running offense; Malone didn't want to hear the unrealistic expectations PDA had for the roster he put together.

^spot on with the Bike analogy.

Here's some cliffs for you:
-Corbin is our guy the rest of the season "And hopefully for a long time"
-Pete said 100 times "i'm not new at this, i know what im doing" and added some aawkward laughs in. It came off as very condescending towards the fans that have been questioning the FO
-He brought up the new arena 50 times, when NOBODY ever asked about it
-He of course added that Derrick Williams is playing well
-He says they loved what happened in Summer league, the style of play. Malone wasn't providing that
-He thinks the team in it's current condition, with the current coach, can win this season
-DMC still being at 60% health is holding the team back from that winning happening

Your bicycle analogy is pretty spot on. I bet PDA would even tell you that it wasn't working right before it was stolen too.
He's been fixing bikes for 17 years, what's happening with your bike is fine, totally normal, and part of an awesome plan that will meet all of your short and long term goals for that bike. No, you can't hear anything about the plans for your bike.

PDA can't give you answers, because there are none. We keep wanting him to give specifics, but he's never going to answer directly because it would reveal...........there are no good reasons for what's going on.

Basically what PDA said was:

1. Malone didn't respect me so I fired him.
2. I won't give you data points because if I did, you could use them against me. They are mines alone to use against Malone.
3. You fans are ungrateful. We're building you an arena.
4. I've lived in better places than this and fans there didn't act this way. You guys need to get a life.
5. I want to win with style to match our shiny arena.
6. I'm insecure so I'll keep telling you how I'm NOT an idiot and how many years I've been doing this.
7. I'm not allowed to hire a new coach yet, so Corbin is our guy.

If Pete really wanted to see exciting, fast-break basketball why did he trade for Rudy Gay? Derrick Williams played his best basketball in a Kings uniform the first two weeks he was here. Then we bring in Rudy, slide Isaiah into the starting spot, and suddenly we have a "big 3" offense centered around three players looking to create their own shot. Everybody else got frozen out of the offense last year and things became increasingly stagnant and iso-based. Pete created this situation himself! How can he not be able to see this? I was complaining last year about the stagnant offense, but we only had one PG left and he's shoot-first by his own admission. Aside from Rudy and DeMarcus, nobody else could create their own shot in a half-court setting. It was a personnel problem, so you fix that by bringing in a better distributor and allowing Rudy and DeMarcus to play to their strengths.

The offense we saw the first three or four weeks of this season is the best offense we're ever going to see featuring both Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins. DeMarcus was a lefitimate MVP candidate in that system. Rudy Gay was a shoo-in for his first All-Star game. We were one of only two teams in the league with 2 top 10 scorers and we were playing effective defense as well. And that was with an ice-cold Ben McLemore starting at SG. Now that Ben is making his shots, it should have been even more effective. If Pete fired Malone because he wants to see Derrick and Darren running in the open court and connecting on alley-oops, why not just keep Vasquez and Williams in the starting lineup last year and use the 19 million you didn't spend on Rudy Gay to find a PF who can keep up with them? Even his own logic isn't internally consistent. As much as I beat the "defense first" drum -- and it's not just lip-service, that's the kind of basketball I most like to watch -- I'm willing to go along with a coherent plan if you have realistic goals and ideas about how to get there. If we've learned anything from the PDA era so far, it's that there is no consistent plan. His own personnel moves contradict each other.

What scares me is i have a feeling they are gonna do what Denver did with Carmelo, trade DMC off for parts that "fit" better for what they want to do.
Yep. Better get ready. He made it clear when he answered a question with a question "How many wins did Malone get without DeMarcus?"

Honestly, there was 1 to 2 things that made total sense.

1. He said that isolation ball is not the way to go. We did seem to have an isolation heavy offense. I seem to remember LOTS of complaining about this.
2. Because of the focus so heavily on defense, the players were not well conditioned. This seems to show in the way that we'd get off to good starts and flounder.

Look, I am as upset as the next that we got rid of Malone, but those do make at least some sense.
1. We were ISO heavy because that's our best players strength OKC is the same way. Collison isn't a strong pick and roll passer so we can't keep running that.

2. This is comical We lost leads cuse we have the worst bench in the nba nothing to do with conditioning. Maybe if those clowns kept IT on that team friendly contract we would have a bench.

3. We let Tyreke Evans walk why why why why why.

To be fair he went on to talk about building a winner that could compete at a high level, an exciting team when the arena opens etc etc

But it was his immediate response that threw me.

Yep. Better get ready. He made it clear when he answered a question with a question "How many wins did Malone get without DeMarcus?"
To further expand on this, they are setting up the narrative perfectly. Now that Malone is gone and DeMarcus is speaking out about the decision, and his body language has totally gone down hill, eventually they will have enough "reasons" to trade Boogie.

I see it similar to the York/Harbaugh situation. It will be a "mutually agreed upon" decision that they are better off parting ways.

Add in his constant reminder of talking with the players because he was an agent.

But good summary, but at least he handled the 4 on 5 bs.

he speaks like a slimy politician and it disgusts me

that whole "you populace are a bunch of imbeciles so I have to talk in shiny generic terms to make you chase the shiny red truck" talk makes me puke. Reminds me of our federal government.
He said that in the interview a law and former political background.

Needs a massive PR campaign though.

Been holding off judgment on this in a desperate attempt to maintain optimism about this team. I can't anymore.

I'm about 15 minutes into the interview. He's already said a ton of garbage:

1 - he wanted to use Demarcus "on different parts of the floor." WTF. I assumed trading Reke and acquiring Rudy was about moving Demarcus closer to the hoop and no longer requiring him to be a "stretch 5." WHICH HAS IMPROVED HIS PLAY AND EFFICIENCY. I assumed they were being smart but now I have no idea.

2- they have NO PLAN (unless it's Mullin and he's intentionally making the team worse to lower the bar for Mullin next year). I reserved judgment in the hopes that they had something good waiting in the wings. They obviously don't (and Mullin is not "something good").

3- "everyone told Vivek not to sign Demarcus." No crap dude, they wanted him to hit FA so they could sign him.

4- PDA: stop talking about your resume. It's not as impressive as you think it is.

Lot's of teams have fired successful coaches and improved afterwards because management had a specific vision or fall-back that allowed them to move forward better. It's now obvious that this is not what the organization did.

The City of Sacramento should have just bought the team outright. Getting tired of ego-driven front offices and owners who care more about themselves than winning.
