Just watched a couple videos on Nik Stauskas. Man, I think the kid is going to be a great shooter, but he's so slow!! I just have a hard time seeing him guard a 2 guard in the NBA. His defense is already abysmal as it is in college. I think he's going to be another Jimmer bust, unfortunately. You can tell he works hard and has the confidence intangible; however, I don't think he will keep that confidence for too long--much like Jimmer. Once it goes downhill, it goes downnnn. The only reason I think someone like Saric (with no athleticism) can make it in the league is because of the potential of his size. He can put some weight on and he's got good footwork on defense. It will make him manageable on defense; however, your main prospect with him is his offensive upside.
I think as long as a player can handle his weight on defense and make himself a respectable defender, then you go for him if it's the offensive upside you're looking for. Nik Stauskas just doesn't seem to be able to handle his own against NBA guards on the defensive end. I have no doubt he'd be a good shooter (like Jimmer) but he's too slow man. He'd definitely be a third string guy coming into the NBA. We need something far superior to what Nik can offer.
I'm ok with any of these picks: Wiggins, Embiid, Parker, Exum, Randle, Saric, Vonleh, and Nurkic. Anything else, trade your pick.
Smart and Gordan are great freak athletes and have outstanding body length measurements (if Gordan plays SF in the NBA); however, I think they won't truly "find themselves" in our league until the 3rd or 4th season in the NBA. Cousins would be long gone by then, unfortunately and then the whole rebuilding process commences...again. Smart and Cousins are too hot-headed to be on the same team. You draft a neutral personality if you want Cousins to stay. We need a player who will help Cousins keep his temperament down, not motivate him to get worse with anger. I think IT has had enough of a bad influence with regards to that aspect but has somewhat worked on it/his ego. Smart seems set in his way. I wouldn't take him also because of his horrendous shot. In no time soon will his shot become any better than it is right now which is ugly as hell. I think having a PG that can't hit the 3 is a huge handicap. One of the big reasons why John Wall isn't a superstar is because of his lack of outside game that would propel him to the top. It adds a whole new dimension to a player's game. Especially when you have guys double teaming Cousins down low in the post. You need a player who can knock that open 3 down. Second, he's not a pass first guard and his playmaking skills aren't that great. So, a Tony Parker in the coming is nowhere to be found which means that he has no excuse for his lack of shot making. The only reason why I believe he will make it in this league is his demeanor on defense and how he portrays himself as a hard worker. I think he'll be a 15-5-5 guy in his first season. I think he'll be at best a 22-5-5 guy which sounds great but he's a stat filler and that's what he does best. However, he's not the guy you want on a team with Cousins. One of the worst complimentary players in the draft.
Moving on to Gordan, I think he has all the skills to be a solid 3-4 forward in the league; however, I think it'll take him a couple years to develop and his upside isn't really worth taking that time. His jumper is nowhere near what it should be despite showing gradual improvement after college. I think his defense and athleticism will always make him a key role player much like Derrick Williams but that's my point exactly....WE ALREADY HAVE D. WILL. Why draft an identical clone of him. The only difference is Gordan plays great defense and can guard both SF and PF. That's great however his shot is worse than D. Will's... At this point he's not a 2 way player nor can he guard any of the starting PF's in the league. Thus, he's obsolete for me. I'm not looking for a ROY player. I'm not even looking for a player to hit his prime in his first season, obviously. I'm not one of those guys who's like "I want a WIN NOW team"...I'm just asking for a player to be mostly developed by his 2nd or 3rd year in the league. A player you can rely on in the playoffs who won't choke.
I think that's one of the main reasons why I like European/foreign players. Despite being young, Saric and Nurkic are far more mature than anyone else in the lottery. They've got a good head on their shoulders and their BBIQ is very high. Like the Spurs, you want to surround yourself with these types of players. Miami wouldn't be as good as they are if they didn't have one of the smartest basketball players in NBA history--LeBron James...
I think we're currently missing that smart glue on this team. Cousins has the potential for it; however, his temperament and personality causes him to make irrational decisions at times. You need a player who is calm down the stretch and can make the proper decisions throughout the game. Look at the Spurs team again. A 12 man roster comprised of players who know their role, don't try to go outside their comfort zone, listen to their coach and follow the playbook. This equates to a high BBIQ for me and a player who will ultimately help down the road. I think it's a huge plus that Saric has incredible offensive upside due to his intelligence and footwork and Nurkic's European white man athleticism will definitely help him transform into a player similar to Vucevic/Kanter/Jonas V.
Randle is a player I like also because of his size, game style and work ethic.
He's not the most exciting player or prospect but you just have a feeling he's going to be a 20-10 guy in the NBA who can get to the free throw line whenever he wants because of his strength and size. His only downside to coming to Sac is the lack of defense that he shows. He's one of the worst shot blockers for a top 5 prospect and his build. That's mostly due to him being an undersized PF. That's something that will prevent him from being a superstar IMO. I think Randle needs to work on his mid-range jumper if he wants to be a top 5 pick.
Exum is another smart international player who has good temperament and seems to be a composed individual. I think he's got a lot of upside due to his athleticism and size as a two guard player. He's definitely one of those players that you just take the risk based on his potential because of the many different things that he can offer to a team. The one thing I don't like about him is his shooting. His 3 point shooting is fairly abysmal at this level. I think he has a nice jump shot where he could improve on this. I honestly like the Westbrook/Parker comparison for him. I think he'll be a nice hybrid and definitely a player that at the end of his career might be the best one from this draft.
Wiggins is a sure fire. I think he's got the right mental fortitude and confidence to be a HOF. His upside is larger than anyone in this draft and he knows it. His work ethic has been proven since the start of the season. He had a bad last game in college but that's to be expected because there was immense pressure on him and there will be in the NBA as well but that will be fairly dispersed once he gets in the groove. I personally think that he will go #1 for a lot of teams. My only downside to his game is that he's not fully NBA ready and he's a bit like Ben Mac in that regards. I think it'll take him a second season to get in the groove. Which isn't a big deal if by some chance we draft him. I'd have him coming off the bench for Gay and playing around 25-30 mpg in his rookie season. Just letting him get a feel for the game. Then, I'd let Gay walk and we'd clear 19 million in cap space as well as having found a far superior replacement. It couldn't be a more perfect option for the Kings if Embiid is not #1 option.
Parker is another sure fire player who I think is more NBA ready than anyone else. I think he'll win ROY and be a HOF. I think he'll average easy 20ppg in his first season as well as 8 rebounds and a couple assists. I think his defense will improve as he learns the tricks of the NBA. He's a Melo player who is team oriented. There can't be better said. I like this kid a lot; however, I think his upside is just a little below Wiggins and Embiid but lets just say that he'd be the best "right now" player. However, with Gay staying (most likely), I wouldn't want to hinder Parker's progression. I also think that he needs to work a bit on his consistency. He seems to be a sensitive kid and needs to get a little "tougher" in order to fully succeed to his max. potential.
Embiid is a HOF talent and can be the best big man in the league (considering the lack of talent--besides Cousins of course). However, I strongly fear two things about him: Chronic injuries and hands. I think that he's got some weak ligaments in him and that his lack of athleticism will make him a fragile player in the future. He doesn't have that elasticity in him. I just have a big fear for some reason that he won't live up to his full potential. This is a big fear if by some chance you get the #1 pick. Otherwise, he's one of those rare big men with a high BBIQ that can bring a lot to a growing team. He's the perfect compliment PF/C to Cousins and you probably won't find a better fit due to his rim protection ability and his post presence on the offensive end. The only thing that I'd like to see him work on game wise is positioning as that will increase his hands issue but also his mid-range jumper. We'll need that considering Cousins is our main post player and I don't see that changing considering he's the most effective post player in the NBA.
Last but not least, Noah Vonleh. I think this kid has tremendous upside. He's a little shorter than what you'd want as a PF but his athleticism and reach makes him a perfect potential pick. He's got great hands, great ball handling and passing skills. He's not the best defender but you know that he can be a great one if he wanted to. I think with the right coaching staff, he could be a decent shot blocker in the league. I think his offensive upside is what most teams are looking for in this guy. He's got a great mid-range jumper. He can put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim. Most PF's will have a hard time guarding him because the kid can knock down 3's all day. I think he's got Bosh potential but for a PF. Saying that, I wouldn't mind picking him at #5. I think he'd be a little bit of a better pick for the Kings.
My top draft picks based on future outcome of the Kings:
1. Wiggins--Only here cause I think we can offload Gay and get an elite shot blocker in return + vets and a superior replacement for SF position. Win-Win
2. Embiid
3. Parker-- Love him and similar to Wiggins situation; however, I just think his upside is a little less than the top 2 choices.
4. Exum
5. Vonleh
6. Saric
7. Randle
8. Nurkic
Anything else, TRADE the damn pick for an established player in the league that is either a shot blocker/rim protector or a starting PG that is a floor general and pass first type of player.
I think we'll pick at #7 and at that point, I'd like to keep our pick and more than likely the players available will be Saric and Nurkic. I wouldn't hesitate on either. My only fear is that we go for a Nik or Smart type of player which would make me extremely disappointed in our organization.
