Yi Jianlian

You gotta be kidding me! Yi, still around at #10? If that was so and GP did not pick him, I would seriously reconsider my loyalties. Unless Portland puts some crazy plan forth to get Conley that upsets the order, I see Yi in the top 5.

As a message board, you guys do not want to get Yi. When we got Yao, we got inundated with YOF's (Yao-Only-Fans). There are literally thousands of them and all they do is post about how Yao doesn't get enough touches or how T-Mac should defer to Yao more. Having Yao is obiously worth it, but I'm not so sure that Yi is. If you guys take Yi, you can count on getting your own set of YOF's.

I hear that! We had Sean Chen try out for the Kings a couple of years ago and the board was nearly drowned in Chen fans.

;)

These are the Peja/Vlade/Hedo Kings. Believe me, we've been there done that. ;)

Heck, even Reef came with his own (2 or 3) fans. Comes with the territory.

Ah but the potential territory in the case of Yi runs in the BILLIONS!!!

;)

I'm sure those guys came with a lot of fans, but Yi has literally millions of fans in China. He may be more popular than Yao is over there.

Haha 1 or 2 of those guys were insane. I remember one of them was like "and you should trade Miller because he doesn't compliment Reef with his bad D. You should trade Artest because he gets too many of Reef's touches, same with Bibby. You should trade Martin so Reef can get some guys who will help Reef win NOW." It was hilarious.

I'd be willing to learn chinese if he's as good as Yao...

There's been tons written about Yi and how he is a very different player than Yao. I'll stick to the positives. He is said to be 19 years old, although he is mature for his age. He's 7 feet tall which is 5-6 inches shorter than Yao but is more mobile. Some say he reminds them (slightly) of Dirk N. when he was 19 and quite raw. Does not post very well at this point, but can dribble decent for his size and can pull up and shoot in transition. Yi is an excellent shooter from mid-range and can score from the three point line. He's a very good free throw shooter as is Yao. Yi is not a project, but like Yao and Dirk when they first entered the NBA, he still needs time to improve on aspects of his game. I predict he will go somewhere around pick 5-8 in the upcoming NBA draft. I don't think the Chinese government is going to interfere much if at all as far as a team (destination) selecting him. Reportedly, there are over 100 players in China between 17-21 who are at least 7 feet playing basketball at various levels - so more Yao's and Yi's bound for the NBA would seem highly likely.

He seems to come with baggage with the goverment thing and the fact that he is listed as 22 in some places. Everybody keeps saying he isn't a center. At 7 feet tall why?? He is good for a 19 year old but, is behind as a 22 year old.

Why is he behind as a 22 year old?! He is FAR more advanced and a MUCH better prospect than Noah yet many people would be happy if we did end up with Noah.

As for this baggage thing, I don't see Houston having any problems with Yao and he is by far a bigger name in China.

yi is 7 feet tall, but he was listed as 225(?) and recently weighed in at 240. in comparison, vlade was about 265 (listed...) and webb at 6'10" 245. dirk is 7', and 245. translation... yi is a skinny kid. a 7 footer doenst dictate playing the 5. dirk plays the 4, duncan plays the 4.

for positions... its not about size that dictates what position you play, its relative skill set, and quickness that designates how small of a position that you can play. size at positions is never a bad thing as long as they can guard that position. yi is quick, and mobile. he will get banged around by all 5s, and most 4s. hes not quick enough to play the 3. he has size, and indications that he can fill out with 5-10 pounds of upper body strength. thats why hes a 4.

Vlade came into the NBA at age 19 with the Lakers. I know he didn't weigh anywhere near 265 at that time. Yi is skinny if you like, but not a skinny rail. His overall physique may be better (more proportional) than Yao who is relatively skinny waist up, but with huge hulking tree trunk legs. Also, it's been reported in pre-draft workouts scouts were impressed with Yi's apparent better than expected stamina, quickness and speed compared to Yao.

it will also be noted that at the end of his career... 265 might have been a stretch as well :p. agreed. yi is not a rail. in fact, i read here that scouts were impressed with his core strength. at 240 and 7, its much better than a brenden wright at 6'10 and 220, but my point was that yi does not have the skill set, the banging ability, the bulk, to play the 5. nor would you want him to play the 5, when he would match up better at the 4, and still be quick enough to take most prototypical 4s to the basket (this is assumption of course), while still having to play him up honest because of his range. if he develops, his game creates mismatches ala dirk, and it would be a waste to stick him at the 5.

YJL is 22 not 19.

I think Yi coming to the Kings would be a great thing. First off I'm sure the Maloofs would love it as TONS of money will come rolling in as it did with Yao. But more importantly from our perspective is that he would definitely bring a unique offensive element to the team. Imagine a 2-3-4 of Martin, Garcia, and Yi, very difficult to defend just because of their unique styles of play. I hope the Kings dump the defensive focus and go back with the offense, not to say they can't defend at all but you gotta be on one side of the fence. That being said though it is hard to imagine Yi not having a deal in place before the draft to be picked higher, probably the top 5 really.

And that was only fans from Taiwan...

(Ok, I'm guessing no one got the joke... see.... Sean Chen is from Taiwan... and you know.... China and Taiwan are... like....... err... nevermind.... :p)

Apparently Petrie is going to go watch him work out in LA, so in the highly unlikely event that he drops to #10, Petrie might be expected to pick him.

If Petrie is impressed by seeing a guy work out against furniture, anyway... when he worked out of Chicago and Boston, he wouldn't work out against any humans, they had to watch him play versus a chair and a couch.

Yi is working out in LA? For the 14th (Clippers) and/or 19th (Lakers) picks? It seems inconceivable that he could fall that far, and the only way for those teams to trade up to get a top ten pick would seem to be with Bryant (not gonna happen), Brand (not gonna happen) or Bynum. Would any team between 3 and 9 be interested enough in Bynum to swap a pick for him with Yi et al. on the board?

Yi is living in LA right now and his agent is holding private workouts -- teams have to come to him. He also is limiting the workouts to approved teams -- since Petrie is going down there it must mean we're on the approved list.

Ah, that makes more sense.

then of the teams in the top 10, chicago poses the problem, since they are supposed to be very high on Yi. boston is hard to gauge; they may not want to draft yi and go for an american blue chipper from NCAA, or trade that pick altogether for proven vets to team with pierce.
