Iverson

The Grizzlies announced Monday in a statement that the team has ended its one-year contract with the 10-time All-Star and former league MVP in what it called a mutual agreement. Iverson is expected to be placed on waivers by 6 p.m. ET Monday, a league source told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan.
Under the agreement, Iverson will receive only a fraction of the $3 million he was scheduled to earn. If he clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday night.

I wonder what the "personal" reasons were? I also wonder if he will play NBA ball again... one would assume someone would like to pick him up...

i hope no other team signs him..

"Immediately, Iverson began talking about his distaste for coming off the bench and being on a rebuilding team filled with youth from Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo to recent draft picks Hasheem Thabeet and DeMarre Carroll." from ESPN

he didn't know he was coming off the bench and playing with youth? why the heck did he sign w/ the team? privileged ppl getting paid ridiculous amounts of money to play ball complaining.... hope his fate is the same as i need to feed my family sprewell.

Wow, what a shocker  ….Maybe New York can sign him or as I said in another thread, the Bobcats could take him.

It would be embarrassing if some team picked him up. He’s not a leader, he’s selfish and he isn’t willing to come off the bench as energy guy (a different type of leader). And it seems he holds himself higher than any of his other teammates.

I might not like how he acts but, if something was happening in his personal life, I hope everything is ok.

i hope no other team signs him..

I read a ESPN article about him a while ago and he said that his goal was to win a championship this year and anything short of that would be pointless...I guess he forgot to look at the roster before he signed on the dotted line.

Na he probably thought that he could carry the grizzlies to the finals and win a championship. But they benched him, so all hope of that was lost

Well I was glad when the Grizz benched him in the recent game with the Kings. AI may be getting old for the NBA but he was starting to heat up in that game:)

lol...I got in such a hurry to FINALLY scoop everyone here, i forgot to take the CAPS off when typing "yAHOO" . My apologies to my fellow Kings brotherhood! :p
I wasn't criticizing the caps. I was thinking it looked like a Grizz fan might be yelling Yahoo, we got rid of AI! ;)

Don't mean to interrupt the Iverson hatefest. But he's always been one of my favorite players, hope he latches on to a contender and gets a chance at a ring.

According to the latest wiretaps he is willing to come off the bench for a contender, he doesn't want to retire yet.

What contender would want AI on their team? Wasn't Detroit considered to be a "contender"?

Especially if things like this were happening:

Yahoo said:
...Sources say Iverson started to speak louder and louder about how he had played for one dumb bleeping coach in Detroit a year ago, and now had come to play for another dumb bleeping coach in Memphis. He never dared speak this way on the Detroit Pistons’ bus because he feared team president Joe Dumars and respected the championship players on board.
...
Just a year ago, Pistons teammates listened to Iverson proclaim on the team bus that he was still one of the three best players in the sport – Kobe, LeBron and me, Iverson said – and probably not in that order. Eventually, Dumars shipped him out.

It's just sad to see how a player of his caliber, can fall so fast because his ego is too big for his own good.

Wouldn't that be apropos??

And I hope such a self-centered, selfish player never gets a ring. I hope no NBA team ever signs him again. (That probably will happen, though.) It would restore a little of my faith in the idea that sometimes people do get what they deserve.

You're probably right...They should fire the Grizzlies coach right away. lol

I totally and completely agree with you. Players like him don't deserve to win any rings.

While not disputing any of the anti-Iverson sentiment, I will say that he was right about both coaches. One has already been fired, Lionel Hollins certainly could be -- Hollins is 33-80 as a coach in his career. Of course his wonderful lead assistant is Johnny Davis, who's career head coaching recorrd is 73-144. SO maybe Hollins has made himself safe just by making sure that he has nobody competent on his staff either.

Chatting with the Big Cheese

I thought this was pretty interesting. It's an interview with the Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley in which he explains exactly what happened with Iverson from his point of view. There's still some parts that don't make a lot of sense (why did Iverson get upset so quickly, why did he announce his retirement) but it does sortof explain why Memphis waived him. And clearly Lionel must have said or done something which set him off.
