Wow. Keith Smart doesn't believe in roles.

Well, that's a problem.

I question just what the hell he learned from Popovich. Doesn't believe in defining roles at all, yet Pop has clear cut roles and if you don't buy in, he sits you then ships you off, and that's if you actually agreed to fill the role he had for you in the first place before he signed you.

All you have to do is listen to him talk for a minute and a half and it's clear he doesn't know what he's doing. Guys who've been in the league a while know what their strengths are? Yes because they have coaches who, at one point, told them what to do! He just convinced me that the team would be better off without a coach, which it probably would be if this is his attitude.

The fact that Theus was our best coach since RA, and that Wesphal is middle of the pack, is quite depressing.

Interesting that Theus just signed as Lakers D-League head coach. Musselman was head coach of the Los Angeles D-Fenders last season but accepted an assistant coach job at Arizona State. I know that Theus was considered for couple college Div 1 head coaching jobs (UNLV, Illinois, etc.) before going back to pro level which apparently he prefers. Maybe we'll see Reggie on the Lakers bench as an assistant at some point. As Lakers head coach - he'd surely love that after D'Antoni has his chance at greatness in LaLa land.

Don't know what Westphal and Natt are up to - if anything.

I'm going to take a slightly different approach. I didn't disagree with any of the individual things he said. All those things were true. Rebounders should rebound. Players should play to their strengths. However, I don't think he really addressed the question that was being asked, and I find that disturbing. I think the reporter, and everyone on this fourm know what the reporter was asking. And if Smart didn't, its unbelievable, and if he did, then he was just doing a snow job to cover up his inability to put people in their proper roles. Personally I'm tired of his BS. He's done some good things, but the most important thing is coaching the team, and so far, thats been a failure.

Kenny Natt was hired by the sports ministry of India to coach their national Team. Last I heard he was still helping the Basketball Federation of India(BFI) in developing the talent and promoting the game of Basketball in the Cricket crazy nation. Recently, He has been appointed the director of the IMG Academies’ basketball program. The Indians (BFI) probably sent him to IMG to help develop their own potential version of Yao Ming. 16 year old Satnam Bhamra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpZoQPxxdUg) Who is currently training at IMG in Florida.

Man, that should be against international law -- a billion people in that market, and now the NBA is going to lose them all forever.

I actually really liked Reggie Theus. I wish we had given him some additional time to work with the team. In all honesty, I saw a lot of great qualities in that guy when he gave his post game comments. I actually thought he sounded like a young Phil Jackson at times because he came across sounding like he really knew what the heck he was talking about. And I also honestly feel that most of the roster at that time related to his coaching style. And I also do believe that we could have been a playoff team, and a very good one, under his leadership...

MuscleWoman probably has to be the worst coach we have had. Natt was surprisingly even better than him, to be honest with you.

Westphal is a close 2nd behind Theus, but the thing that killed him was his coaching philosophy was so in the 90's, when it worked for him. That stuff don't work in today's NBA.

So my list looks like...

Theus
Westphal
Smart
Natt
MuscleWoman

And remember the reason given that Theus was fired is because he refused to fire his assistant coach Chuck Person - as apparently Maloofs wanted. Ironically, Person was quickly hired by Phil Jackson for his "defense minded coaching style" and close relationship with Ron Artest. Then Mike Brown retained Person and guess what - "The Rifleman" is still on Lakers bench with new coach Mike D'Antoni.

I do not remember all of that, honestly. But I wouldn't be surprised, seeing that we are owned by the Brothers MaGoofballs...

Smart may have a caffeine problem or something related to it. He talks a lot without answering the questions directly. He seems to believe that his players haven't bought into his system yet. We are all wondering what that system is. He thinks the players need to play together for awhile so they can "gel." This is the kind of talk you get from parents of players in middle school that don' know bball. Smart is sincere, players seem to like him, but he is probably a below average coach. He is destined to change teams a lot and will eventually fade away. He is not much of a motivator compared to say Popovich, Karl, or Sloan.

I think people like Larry Bird or Jerry Sloan have tremendous mental toughness that comes across to NBA players. They are big, strong, grown men that need to be pushed, but respected at the same time. It is a tough line to walk.
