I mean who would you have picked on last year's draft: JT or Anthony Randolph? They were 12th and 14th pick in the draft.
I mean certainly JT has a better offensive game right now and is a better rebounder but keep in mind that Randolph is good 3 years younger than JT and already is a better defender out of the two and overall seems like a player with a sky high potential...

Easy decision. I didn't like Randolph at the time, and I haven't seen anything from him yet that would make me change my mind.

Of course at the time I wasn't thinking Thompson. I was more thinking that it was an 11-player draft and all 11 of them got nabbed right in front of us. Now after a year, it looks to me that Thompson was the BPA.

I liked Randolph more back then and I still think he's going to be the better player. His attitude is the only thing that might hold him back, Nelson being such a crappy coach may skew the data on that one though.

Are we going by then or now? Because at the time, I knew nothing about JT and Randolph as a lottery pick. So, back then I certainly wanted Randolph. Now? JT all the way. In 5 years - JT all the way.

Imagine a starting lineup where someone had to drive past Kevin Martin near the baseline and then get met by Randolph underneath the hoop!

JT....Although I think AR has a way higher ceiling.

I would love to have Randolph on the Kings however, its just that the kid seriously needs to put on some weight or he's going to get injured all the time with his play style. He is pretty beastly considering he's listed at 6' 10 205 lbs. Great rebounder and shot blocker. Nasty dunker.

We should have tried to ship Greene and our Houstin pick to GS for him when he was deep in the dog house. That franchise is so messed up they might have bitten on that trade!

randolph has serious game.... but he's just too skinny... if he adds a lil size he could be a more athletic odom/harrington/jamison type of player. but i would have to go with thompson. if we could somehow have both that would be nice. if we could trade greene for randolph i would in a heartbeat.

He definitely needs to add weight, but I think he's surprisingly strong for his frame. It doesn't stop him from aggressively attacking the basket, blocking shots, and grabbing rebounds.

I believe that I stated many times before the draft that I wanted the Kings to draft Thompson. I have no reason to change my mind now. The knock on Randolph in college and at the pre-draft workouts was that he didn't seem to have the commitment one would expect. He's done nothing to change that perception since then. He's a very talented player, who may end up having a very average career. If he gets his head on straight, he could turn out to be a great player. His call..

Agreed. AR is a good dunker, very athletic and can block shots, but he is very raw and he's already butted heads with Warrior's management several times this year and fired his agent who would not demand more playing time for him. Not a great sign for a player with the poor reputation you mentioned. And make no mistake, Randolph has a lot of work to do if he will ever be a true impact player.

I don't believe Randolph can be a 4 in the NBA. He's too skinney and doesn't have a frame condusive to adding much weight. That means he needs to improve his jumper greatly and still needs to ad some weight even as a 3. His handles are good for his size, but need a lot of work to be able to create his own shot. He's terrible finishing off the dribble right now. I have seen him airball layups or clank them off the top of the backboard.

Randolph has some solid base skills, so if he becomes a hard worker, it's possible he could become a better player than JT. However, with JT's combination of size, strength, skill and reported work ethic, I'd bet money on JT being the better player of the two five years from now and beyond.

At the time, I wanted Randolph, but wasn't very let down to get JT, I felt like Geoff had the right general idea. At the time, I wanted Randolph because he had the things I like about JT, plus an established rep as a shotblocker.

Now, in retrospect, I don't know for sure. Randolph's numbers are, overall, better, but I've loved JT's work ethic. Given the opportunity to trade, straight across, I'd have to get a much better idea of the personalities involved. Randolph could be the better player, I think, if he wants to. But does he want it enough?
