Aren't they just going for the more literal wizards that shoot lightning bolts out of staffs kind of thing? May as well be the unicorns.

No, I don't think that's what they were going for. Wizards were considered men of magical ability. Men who possessed astounding skills, skills that were so amazing they must be magic. How about Magic for a team name? No dumber than Wizards. Or as dumb as Wizards, depending on your point of view.

And Bullets was only the 2nd most offensive name in that town.

I really dislike any team name that doesn't end in an s, like Magic or Heat. A Kings player can say "I am a Sacramento King", but someone on Miami says "I am a Miami Heat". Sounds stupid to me

Yeah, I too was appalled by that late 80s/early 90s trend of "unique" team names (and even worse logos) that don't end in "S". When MLS made its debut it was the worst. Sporting Kansas City who used to be the Wizards initially went by the Wiz. I mean really now!!!

They actually only had 2 teams with "s" names: Rapids and MetroStars (which was a sucky name that only looks good in light of them now being named after an energy drink). Then they had the Revolution, Mutiny, Fusion, Clash (ok, I liked this for the same reason I liked Washington Bullets), Fire, Burn, Galaxy and Crew. Plus DC United which doesn't suck solely on the basis of it being a rip off of ManU. Most of those teams wisely changed their names.
