The kings were below the luxury tax threshold this season... i believe the luxury tax was a little over $60 million last year... the kings are at $54.98 million for next year, with the players under contract (not including bonzi)... the luxury tax will probably be around $60-61 million next year...

therefore, do the maloofs spend like they have in the past (i.e. 2001-2002) or do they try to keep it under the luxury tax like this year (i.e. 2005-2006)...

will they spend to keep bonzi? use the MLE? do they trade to get players but, stay under the luxury tax?

How do you think the maloofs will spend this offseason???

We won't know the luxury tax threshold for 2006-2007 until after the season is over. How can we possibly know if they're going to be over it or not?

I think what we DO know is that the Maloofs are much more inclined to reopen the purse strings now. Their comments about Bonzi have made it pretty clear they want to keep him. And I think they want to give Musselman the best possible team to go forward with.

It's not about the luxury tax per se.

true we won't know the true luxury tax for next year... but in the past, it does not change a huge amount... usually 1-2mil change if any... if the luxury tax was about $60 mil last year, it will probably be between $60-62mil next year...

my question is more to see how people feel the maloofs will spend this off season... will they spend freely like in 2001-2002 or will they try keep the purse strings tight, like in recent years....

the luxury tax seems like a good indicator of how the spending can be judged, since the maloofs have made a big deal of trying not to pay the luxury tax in the last few years....

didn't the nba change the rule on the luxury tax during the last Collective Bargaining agreement? i thought they announced the luxury tax threshold prior to the season now...

I think they will go over it - re-sign Bonzi and use the MLE. Maybe not WAY over, but over.

They have a new coach - THEIR coach - and will want to compete. I see them going for it a little more $$$-wise next year.

Not sure how the Maloof can avoid the LT and still put together a contending team. It obvious to everone that the Kings HAVE to bring in a new big man in the starting rotation. The only way to do this on the cheap is to sign and trade Bonzi, back fill with Martin and hope to shed another contract or two some how and quite frankly I don't see that hapening nor do I think it will cut it. A contneding Kings team with a nice second tire big amn up front AND Bonzi supported by a DEEP bench is the Kings best hope and that will cost money.

This is just supposition on my part but given my observations on sports for 50 years I wouldn't be surprised if guarantees were made when the Maloofs were "courting" Artest...such as "we'll spend what it takes, make the changes necessary to make us a championship caliber team", that type of thing. To keep Ron motivated I think the Maloofs need to step up with cash, personnel changes etc.

I agree that's probably their current mindset, although I don't know if they made those kinds of promises to Artest OR to Musselman. That's why I haven't voted in the poll because I don't think they're thinking about the Luxury Tax.

I think they'll give Petrie the green light (within some kind of reason) to do what he has to do to get the job done.

My personal opinion is that they will go over the luxury tax to a certain extent to which they feel comfortable with. They want to win, but they don't want to overpay for certain players. They want to make us into a championship team so they will go over the luxury tax, but not way over.

From their recent comments I'm thinking the Maloofs ARE more open to going above the Luxury Tax. It is a great question because it seems to have been their line to stay below for this season. If the same line is true for next season then it makes it hard to give Bonzi much of an offer - but if they are willing to go above, it gives many more options for GP.

well the mavs will shell out extra 30 mil
will the maloofs be outdone? i dont think so

Well, they've been letting themselves be "outdone" for years now, so we'll see. Not even sure what to say about it. If they do, what does that say about their effort the last few years? We certainly needed help as the money dried up, and so did our bench, post-02/03. Maybe they will feel the need to put money up to support "their guy" as coach. But again...not really amused by the implication.

Actually I don't think it will be that much of an issue: last season they didn't calculated luxury tax threshold. They just used a set amount of $61.7 million. According to calculations LT threshold would have been $63.7 million. I really doubt LT threshold will be lowered so I think it's safe to say that it will be around $64 million so Kings will probably be over it for only a couple of million at max.
BTW The same thing was with salary cap: 49.5 instead of 50.9 so it's safe to say that cap will be around 51 or even jump to 52 million.

I'm a spaz, I hit the wrong vote button. I think the Maloofs would LIKE to be below the lux tax, but it isn't going to happen with the salaries we already have on the books. I wish I saw them opening the purse strings like they did in 01-02, but I don't fore-see that either. I guess I'm thinking they will try to 'do what they can' without breaking the bank.

I think it was Joe( Or Gavin, The one whose done the least amount of interviews lately) last week on the Rise Guys , Said they would be over the cap this year and have no problem going more over the cap if they needed to.

I feel somewhat like this, too. I'm doubtful that the Maloofs are going to spend like 02/03 again, but I don't think they are totally adverse to paying a modest amount of luxury tax. The team's salary was huge in 02/03 and it didn't guarantee a championship. And teams with more modest team salaries like the Spurs and Pistons have won.

So many things go into a championship contending/winning team. The right mix of players/skills that has to include some major talent; the right coach; the right system; no big injuries, especially to key players; who you draw in playoff matchups; and just plain luck. Spending more money is only a part of the picture and maybe not the most important part.

Thats the vibe I have been getting from them. Good to hear!

I think it's interesting that the vast majority of responses indicate people think the Maloofs will be either at or over the tax threshold.

The whole feeling around here seems to be one of hope and optimism, at least for now. It's a nice feeling. I hope it lasts.

much better than the bad vibes of last off season, despite a couple of solid acquisitions. i'm a little irked that the kings must yet again enter a new season "in search of an identity," but as long as the right moves are made (and yes, trading for kevin garnett would be considered the "right move" ;) ), i will be a happy kings fan.

:)

Cautious optimism on my part. The Maloof seem to be doing what many owners do when they doin't like what they see but lack a clear idea of what they want to see: they flock crap on the wall and see what will stick. Not a great method BUT in this case it also means that the boys are likely willing to spring for at least one more impact player and tha is a good thing.
