Will someone clear something up for me?...

People are talking about the KG trade and how we would only have one MLE to sign a free agent which potentially causes a dillemma(sp?) at PG and C.

But isn't it true if the Maloofs wouldn't mind paying the luxury tax then we could fill both spots?

No, they still have to abide by the salary cap. Once the MLE is used they can only sign players to the minimum contract based on their experience or the bi-annual/million dollar exception (currently this is just under 1.7 million and can only be used once every other season, did we use this last season?).

Yup if the Maloofs are willing to pay the freight they can still sign more guys... I expect they will go a little extra one way or another this year should the mythical KG deal go down they might be foreced to go a lot over at least for the year.

Nope. You only get the single MLE every year. There is also an LLE of about half the MLE's vlaue, or at least was before the last CBA this past summer. But its hard to sign much of anybody of significance with that, so normally its bit players, old creaky vets, guys to fill out your roster.

Now you can still retain your OWN free agents while also using the MLE. So if it were the Bibby version of that trade, you could resign Bonzi and still also use the MLE. But its still only a single MLE ($5mil or whatever).

Of course what is being inored is the very simple route -- make another trade. Or two. Or whatever it takes. Team was in full fledged transition last year. Now there's a new coach as well. If you made a deal for KG, yet more turnover. So might as well close the deal with another move or two and then settle in. Approach the summer like the one back in '98 when a whole new team emerged.

Thanks everyone. Now one more.

So if we wanted to get a guy like Pryzbilla, who could be offered more than the MLE from another team, how could we do it?

The only things we could do would be to either offer him the MLE and hope he takes it or do a sign-and-trade. That means he would sign a contract with the Blazers and then we would trade players whose salaries match Pryzbilla's in order to get get him.

I have this site bookmarked for any type of inquiry regarding the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which includes salary cap explanations, etc. It's a great reference...

The blazers can't S&T Joel because they don't have his bird rights. Atleast that's what I've heard from blazer fans.

Well, I think technically they could, but they would have to use their MLE which would make no sense unless a team was willing to compensate them for something they wanted to be nice, or maybe cut some salary in the process.
