I have no idea what Petrie will do. But if Cousins drops into our laps, I'll gladly leave that decision up to him. And if he passes, then I'll assume he had good reasons to do so. By the same token, if he drafts Cousins, I'll assume that he comfortable that he can fit in.

Sums it up perfectly for me

Can't say before Cousins works out for us. No matter how any of us feel right now, his workout with Petrie and the coaching staff will be the deciding factor. If Cousins comes in and just dominates, with both size and skill, which he's capable of doing, and comes across as an honest 19 year old who admits he has maturing to do,and seems sincere, I don't see how Petrie passes on him.

If Cousins comes in and doesn't impress, seems out of shape, and immature, or some combination of those factors, maybe Petrie passes.

But Petrie did handpick Westphal, and wanted a coach who he knew he would be a good fit for a young, rebuilding team, and for developing players. Petrie's confidence in Westphal and his staffs ability to develop a potentially immature player with a bit of an attitude, but star written all over him. If Petrie is confident in Westphal, which I have no reason to believe he isn't, than I think taking Cousins is less of a risk than if we had Theus or Muss coaching the team.

I didn't vote because the poll reaks of bias. The best option is "reluctantly drafts Cousins"?

I dont recall ever hearing so much negative stuff about a high lottery pick prior to getting drafted. It might be because i havent always come to this site. It might be because Cousins really is from another planet. Alien or no, Cousins is the real deal on the basketball court.

Cousins will be Al Jefferson part deux, at the worst. Physically, he certainly has some issues, between what might be potential conditioning issues and his lack of leaping ability (27" vert) and overall speed, but he has a condor's wingspan, decent enough lateral quickness and decent shotblocking instincts, so defensively he shouldn't be bad--in fact I project him to be average in the NBA here, and he can play both PF and C effectively. Offensively we've already covered it, and suffice to say he'll be elite in this level. Can't see how his pre-draft measurements will drop him out of the top 4, but it confirms my suspicions that his peak will be very good star rather than all-out superstar.

But let me put it this way: I wouldn't blame him if he passed on Cousins for someone like...say, Derrick Favors. There's a reason the Spurs want him, and as a preacher of physical tools, I agree: he's much more physically appealing. Offensively he's definitely not as skilled as Cousins, but he definitely imposes his athleticism--he's finishes well around the rim, gobbles up tons of offensive rebounds (and above average rebounding ability) and will deflect very well on both ends (in particular a very good shotblocker). And he's fit to continue this in the NBA, as his physical tools put him over the top--he has extremely good leaping ability, a great base with good strength at 6'10" 245, very good conditioning, and elite end to end speed (watch out for him in transition). He also has a contour's wingspan and can play center at spurts, and it doesn't hurt he's the youngest player in this draft class. There's much more upside with Favors than Cousins by virtue of his athleticism, and while there are definitely some flaws (turnover prone, black hole?, little range, doesn't get to the line all that well) he's not unlike Amare Stoudemire in many respects, and as a secondary elite player to a primary elite player, or to a very good PG who can run with him, he's built to thrive in the NBA.

It's too bad we dropped to 5 then eh?

...Oh lord I'm bitter.

Honestly, if Petrie passes on Cuz then one of two things need to happen for me to find forgiveness in my heart:

1. Cuz needs to bust out of the league.
-and/or-
2. Whoever GP picked in his stead becomes a stud of the highest order.

I was hoping Monroe would stay out of this draft. He screams GP big to me. And I honestly think last years "toughness draft" was an anomoly moreso than a new direction.

Well, as much as I hate to admit it, I can totally see Minny taking Wesley Johnson 4th overall. And then, when I'm all excited about our pick, I can totally see Petrie passing on Cousins for some unknown reason

Ugh i agree. I just dont know why i feel that way. Probably because Petrie doesn't always go for the popular pick.

Petrie tends to look at a player's skills more than their athleticism, which is why he doesn't always take the popular choice. However, the questions about Cousins aren't based on his skills, but on his maturity level. He has the skills to be a top center in the NBA, which is why I don't think Petrie would pass on him if he is there.

Haha ... I, personally, would rather go somewhere where I could be happy, and I imagine I would have enough confidence in myself that I would believe I could get that big pay raise. Also its not like they are making minimum wage :P

The difference between 3-5th pick in salary is nothing compared to landing in the right spot so you can develop your game, have good coaches, and fit into a team that needs your style. That is by far more important to these guys, and they know. It Tyreke WANTED to be in Sac and so did his crew. You gotta think these guys can exert some influence over where they end up, slightly under performing in workouts, saying a slightly weird thing in interviews, etc. It's SO much better to end up on the team that you belong on rather than the salary difference of a few slots in the draft.
