Will the Kings lose their first round draft pick if they keep this up?
Absolute ludicrous that we ever traded away this thing--top 13 protected or not. I have a bad feeling we'll be cutting it close since we signed Rudy Gay.
Again, to me, worst decision ever made. Sure Gay is worthy for the next couple years but then what? Also, his price tag...
I don't know what the Kings are doing but we're on course to losing a good draft pick and still being a non playoff team.
Face it, with this team, there's no way we'll be playoff contenders.

The only reason we beat the heat was because they stepped off the gas pedal too early and Ray-Ray & Wade weren't on court. Lebron played half-assed, did not care one bit.
This was a fluke win and a game driven by the incredible fans.
Otherwise, we are not doing anything good for the future. Our defense is still horrible and bench is inefficient. We have no consistency. We need an impact player and that would have been a top 5 draft pick had it not been for the arrival of Rudy Gay. Now, we're not the worst team in the league, but we're not playoff contender either. THE WORST if you ask me. Especially this year with the blockbuster draft arriving.
Anyhow, I'll let the rest of you enjoy this "win" LOL

Wow...it was just one win. You do realize we are tied for the 6th worst record in the league with a ton of games to go, right? We aren't going to make the playoffs and there's no way in hell we are going to finish out of the bottom 12. And we didn't "sign" Rudy Gay, we traded for him. This thread sucks.

Not exactly the best time to be bringing this ish up, dude.

territory, man. Simmer down a bit.

I believe our pick is only top 10 protected this year. Either way tanking should not occur. They should not allow protected picks as it encourages it. I like the idea of a draft that is not based on record.

Good morning to you too sunshine.

Having been at the game last night the furthest thing from my mind during overtime was hoping the Kings would lose to ensure a better draft pick.

This team will not make the playoffs, it will receive a lottery pick and it will have a chance to draft a good player. And whether or not the Kings make strides toward improving will be determined by the acumen of the front office and not if they beat or lose to the Heat in December.

Enjoy the ride.

In order to lose the pick we have to finish 13th -- 12 other teams have to be worse. Right now the 13th worst team is Detroit at 14-17 .452. That's a 37 win pace. We're currently 9-19. In order for us to pass the Pistons and win 38, we'd have to go 29-25 in our remaining 54 games, a .537 pace, or roughly a 44 win pace (ironically a pace that would still have us miss the playoffs in the West, but actually be the 4th seed in the East).

Unlike many here I would not 100% rule such a thing out with another move or two by the front office and continued Boogie beasting, but it would mean we were playing some pretty damn good ball. In short we can't lose that pick at this point without ending the season on such a run as to have real hope for the future anyway. There is no way to back into losing the pick now. If we lose it, its because we flat out become a good, winning team for the final 2/3 of the year.

You know, I get that we are not a great team right now. But I for one am tired of trying to live off draft picks. I mean if it happens it happens but I hate the mentality of purposely trying to lose to gamble on a draft pick. We have been living with that for 5 seasons now it seems like.

First of all the tenor of this thread doesn't make sense at all.
The NBA is all about dominant star players. If you look at all the other 'bad' teams out there none of them have a guy who has the potential to dominate for the next decade in the way that Demarcus Cousins can. If you are in the middle of the pack of 'bad' teams, the team with the biggest star is the team with the most hope for the future provided that the FO is smart and does the right things.
So being bad this year isn't all doom and gloom because we've got the best piece out of all of them to build on.
I would certainly take Cousins any of the other 'bad' teams stars like Kyrie, Sanders, MCW, Olidipo, Carmelo, Marc Gasol, Favors, Love, ect.

Now on to the actual reason for responding, and it's something that I mentioned earlier but I think really bears repeating.

Unless we go on an absolute tear there is no way that we'll lose our draft pick. And the simple reason is because their are 2 basketball conferences and that means that 8 Eastern Conference teams have to make the play-offs which means that no matter what our record is, only 7 teams from the East can be ahead of us in the lottery.
So what does that mean for the Kings?

It means that in order to lose our draft pick we have to catapult past 5 Western conference teams in order to hit that dreaded place where we lose our draft pick and we miss out on the play-offs.
Currently that would mean that we would have to finish better than the following teams:
Utah (0 games ahead)
Memphis (3 games ahead and who will be getting back Gasol)
Lakers (4 games ahead)
New Orleans (4 games ahead)
Minnesota or Denver (5 games ahead)

You might think that 4 or 5 games isn't that much ahead of where we are until you consider the fact that we've only won 9 games out of the first 28 and we're the only team in the league who has played single-digit road games.

Now if we make another move and bring in a quality starting PG, and that PG comes in and meshes well while allowing IT to still be effective off the bench, then if there are enough games remaining we could make a run if we aren't in too deep of a hole by that time, but it would require that the Kings play probably the best stretch of basketball that we've seen in the last 8 years or so to do it.
With all the defensive issues as well as what appears to be problems getting the ball down low to Cousins against active defenses, I don't think we're quite yet capable of making such a run.

Essentially, we're another major move away from being in the position of having to worry about that draft pick, and there are no guarantees that a major move will be made with enough games left in the schedule to make the difference.

Let's put it this way, if we loose that pick this year that means DMC has turned into shaq2.0 and averages 28-15 from now on, rudy gay stays efficient something like 20-7 47% shooting, mclemore starts to get going (Beal picked up his play in January and IT gets us 20-8

Hey, if the kings actually get that good it'd be a fun ride. And they'd still have gobs of money coming after next season for a free agent. More than one way to build a team.

One victory over miami's JV team does not quite have me thinking they are about to go on a 10 game winning streak however. And that would still leave them a game UNDER .500. This hole they are in is not small. And the west is not weak. And a whole lot of road games are in our future.

Even if we make a run and are bordering .500 by the end of the year, we could still finish 10th or 11th in the West, with the way things are looking now.

To the OP and anyone else who feels the same way. Do you enjoy tonight's game against the Spurs? Tough game and miss out on the W. Ahhhggg I would rather win.

I would rather win, of course. The realistic side is that we only have 3 players on the team and a hustler in JT. Everyone else is completely irrelevant as the game tonight showed.

Do we really want another lottery pick? Assuming things go as expected we would pick around 7-10(most likely). Is that good enough to get us a superstar? doubtful, All star? maybe, solid rotation guy? most likely scenario, but that would take 3 or 4 years just to get consistent production from that pick, and we would still be trying to develop McLemore. Cousins is ready to win now, Gay is in his prime and IT has emerged as a legit top 10 PG, would we be able to trade this pick on draft day to get us some vets that can contribute right away?

Not this year in the loaded draft. 7-10 still nets you a Willie Caulie-Stein or an Aaron Gordon, two guys who'd probably be top three picks in most other drafts.

This draft is highly unpredictable and the Kings could definitely get a good player out of it. If not a potential all-star. I'm thinking the top 3 will be something like Wiggins, Randle, Parker
Then you have Embiid, Gordon, Smart, Exum and all those other potential all-star caliber players.
In my opinion, Exum would be the best 7-10 pick from that draft. An extremely versatile guard who can def switch between pg-sg roles and is a good defender.

If you replaced 'lose draft pick' with 'lose top draft pick' it could be a reasonable concern depending on the direction you would like to see the franchise go and how much value you place on the top picks in this years draft. When you look at the standings and see only the bucks with less wins it does cross your mind that a conservative approach to winning could be employed, whether one agrees with it or not

I wouldn't really worry about losing 'top draft pick'. First lottery never liked Kings, so hoping is really setting up yourself for disappointing. ;)
Second Kings will still have a shot at WCS or at least Noah Vonleh to get their defensive big which might just be enough for this team to start knocking heads.
