Will Brockman be signed?

So I get this message on my facebook wall about "Rookie Portraits," from the Kings. Notice that Brockman is missing from the pictures:

(edit: link would not work. Grrr.....)

Is this a sign? Does the King's FO really hate rebounding that much? Dude hustles, and he could be had for a bag of dirty potato chips. What's going on here?

They clearly need more frontcourt help, especially if May is ineffective or Thompson/Hawes gets injured.

It's possible the FO's thinking is that they can find a better scrub in training camp. I guess Brockman will have to battle for his spot...

I think Brockman was one of the most intriguing prospects in ALL of the summer league. I hope we give him a contract... Anybody that can rebound like he has in college and the VSL needs a chance... especially on the Kings.

Since we drafted him i assume we have his right. How long can we wait until another team can make him an offer?

I certainly hope he's signed if not what a waste of a near 1st round pick since we originally had pick 31. I know Geoff Petrie has a pretty sordid past in regards to his complete and utter wastefulness of 2nd round picks, but this would be over the top. We still need another player to be signed, why not Brockman?

We don't have to sign him if he plays in Europe. We would have to renounce his rights if he were to sign w/ another NBA team. I think the kings have until the 1st day of the season to sign him or he is automatically a FA.

i think the kings should sign him, hes a preety good player from what i saw at the summer league, suits perfect to the kings.

Immediately after we drafted him, I questioned the FO's motives, since we knew that Hawes had really wanted him, but that a stubby PF (as opposed to a real PF/C) wasn't really something that we needed. I assumed that he wouldn't be around past the end of October, since he seemed very like the sort of prospect that our FO wouldn't value.

He turned out to be a pleasant surprise, playing about as well in Summer League as he did in college. We DO need more rebounding, even if he's not the ideal person to be delivering it.

I like him, but I still won't be surprised at all if we dump him by the end of the preseason. Kings who weren't first round picks can rarely expect anything different.

(And yes, it will be a total waste. There were several very good players we could have had with that pick.)

Well if we dump Brockman, which I hope we don't, just for fun, if nothing else, then Sergio ends up being that pick.

The Kings own his rights at least until the day before season starts (I think). As a 2nd rounder no need to sign him until they see him in pre-season camp. If they don't sign him before the season starts and renounce their rights to him he becomes an UFA. But I think it is 99.9% the sign him. ;)

According to question #42 in "Larry Coon's FAQ about the CBA," the Kings hold his rights until the next draft where if still unsigned at that point he can re-enter the draft. If he signs with a non-nba professional team, the Kings retain his rights longer.

AHH HAH!!! thanks. I like correct to the point stuff. :p

I like his style of play. Its funny, I dont want us to sign a player i like because i dont want our backup bigmen to be May and Brockman. The fact that May already has a spot on the team makes me not want to see Brockman signed, even though i like him. Our reserve bigs would be 6'8 and 6'7. No can do.

Question 98 of the Coon's FAQ, states:
September 6Second round draft picks become free agents if not given a required tender

So, the Kings have until Sept 6th to make Brockman a contract offer. If he refuses to sign, he can reenter next yrs draft as long as he doesn't play professional basketball until then. If he plays Pro basketball other than with the Kings, then the Kings retains his rights for 1yr after that contract expires as long as he doesn't enter into another contract.

I wonder what constitutes "required tender?"

Somewhere, some time ago, I thought I had read that they were close in their negotiations but when I went to try and find where I had read that I was unsuccesful. I had presumed that a contract possibly wasn't being signed simply to keep roster spots open in case of some trade where the Kings are taking back more players than sending out. Who knows?

Brockman is going to come in and knock H%$# out of Kenyon Martin and the other bad boys in the league. I hope he is up to the task. The toughness level from College to the NBA is a big jump.

While on this topic of hard nosed play how many HARD picks is Lakers PG Derek Fisher going to see this year? With the way he clocked Scola in the playoffs, he has his coming!

Jon Brockman has really shown me something this summer, I think he will be signed...he all of a sudden reminds me alot of Mark Olberding, and that's fine with me! Lots of hustle for sure! Wreck'em!

Straight from Wikipedia:

Mark Allen Olberding (born April 21, 1956, in Melrose, Minnesota) is an American former professional basketball player.

A 6'8" forward from the University of Minnesota, Olberding played 12 seasons (1975–1987) in the American Basketball Association and National Basketball Association as a member of the San Diego Sails (1975-76), San Antonio Spurs (1975-82), Chicago Bulls (1982-83), Kansas City Kings (1983-85), and Sacramento Kings (1985-87). He had his best seasons with the Spurs, for whom he played 536 games. One of the highlights of his career occurred on January 21, 1977, when he made 10 field goals without missing in a game against the Boston Celtics. In the 1987-88 season, he played professionally in Italy for Benetton Treviso.

During the 1980s, Spurs teammates Olberding, George Johnson, Dave Corzine, Kevin Restani, Paul Griffin, and Reggie Johnson earned the nickname "The Bruise Brothers" for their physical style of play.

Olberding currently lives in San Antonio and coaches at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Exactly, and whether or not he's 6'7", he's going to go out there and rebound better than just about any 7 footer he goes against. It's funny, Brockman isn't really the type that goes out of his way to pull out a hard foul, it's just that he's so strong it just kind of happens. Brings back memories of that vicious foul on Jamel Horne of Arizona! Just completely clotheslined the guy out of mid air. I want Brockman just because he's a perfect "enforcer" type, something we've needed for a long time.

Pretty good comparison, but Brockman reminds me more of Dennis Rodman the way he gets offensive rebounds for his teammates rather than himself.

I have absolutely no proof of any kind, but I'm pretty sure I heard that Brockman signed. It was during Summer League. Before one of the games, possibly the first one he signed a contract and they had him on KHTK talking to him about if it felt good to get the contract part behind him.

Will hunt for this...

http://www.nba.com/kings/roster/

Still lists him as unsigned. Gotta trust the team page when it comes to the roster.

Semantics, when someone goes out there and can get you extra possessions you are a TRUE REBOUNDER, no matter what you want to call it.

Hardly semantics -- its like saying that Brain Cardinal reminds you of Larry Bird because they could both shoot. The value of those traits is largely a matter of degree.

Westphal spoke of him at the X's and O's dinner as if he were/is part of the roster. He seemed to think the kid has a knack for the ball and that we would no doubt need him (barring some other signing) due to our lack of bigs/rebounders.

On a side note, I REALLY like Westphal, even more so after listening to him speak.

I read a post on another site about the dinner. It was pretty informative. I've been reluctant to post anything from there for fear of violation. But if you were there it would be appreciated by myself and I'm sure others if you could give a short critique of what was said.:)
