Why did we get Ostertag?

Yeah, I was thinking that tonight as well. But Griffin was picked up VERY late by Minnesota -- think in September. They really took a flyer on him -- guy is a borderline nut with a violent history, drug use etc. It paid off tongiht, and this was what worried me when I saw them pick him up (snagged him for one of my fantasy teams :) ) -- he is still a very talented guy, and for a team with a short bench you ahte to see them grab a guy like that for free.

In any case though, he was a hige gamble, and I'm pretty sure Minnesota only took it because of the power of KGs personality. That's a real bonus, and there are probably few other teams out there who could absorb a super-problem child like Griffin and feel like they had the leadership to contain him.

Minny took a big gamble on Griffin. Still what Brickie said is I bet correct. If Griffin gets out of line in Minny you are going to have Kevin aka Satan eyes himself Garnett to keep him in line. I love the Kings, but I'm not sure there is anyone on this team that can do the same.

Maybe Garnett will pop him one like he did the rookie(Ricky Rickert or something like that) during the Summer?Griffin would likely go postal though.;)

This guy just spent six weeks at the Betty Ford clinic earlier this year for treatment because he is an alcoholic. He's got an enormous amount of problems and if he can get through them he has a good upside but he really hasn't played in the NBA for 2 years.

Yeah this is not only NOT the guys the Kings want but despite his success last night I would not count on him being a factor in the post season. Guys like this are seldom consistant on court and there is an increasing likelyhood that circumstances of his own making will prevent him playing out the season.
 
I would have LOVED to see the Kings take a chance on a guy like Griffin (I wasn't even sure he was available). Yeah, he has issues, but I'd be willing to take a chance considering there were reasonable excuses for his implosion with Houston:

- his brother or uncle (can't remember which), with whom he was very close, was murdered
- he was suffering from undiagnosed clinical depression
- the 1st 2 led to an alcohol dependancy
- he had a gold digging GF trying to use their child as a tool to pry more cash out of him

I don't think he's a bad person; I'm not sure most people could avoid an implosion with those circumstances. He has star potential and is still young; while he really only has 2 NBA caliber skills at the moment (outside shooting and shot-blocking), they're the exact two skills needed to destroy the Kings super-slow, ground-bound bigmen. I expect him to have a pretty big impact vs. the Kings this season.

With that being said, it appears that Timberwolves are better than the Kings at every position except for SF and they have a MUCH deeper team. Scary.
Our only hope is that they don't gel well together.
 
wow the GO bashing in this thread is amazing me...

Greg is a role player...he stands out in some games and then in some games he doesn't...if you think he's sucks as a basketball player you apparently never saw him play when he was in Utah....i mean he definetly doesn't have the best hands....but i would NEVER NEVER NEVER under ANY circumstances put ANYONE in the same class as Shawn Bradley...i mean that is so inappropriate and uncalled for

I consider it a very good thing, then, that you aren't actually in control of player acquisition...

His name is Ostertag, BTW.

Had Brad not gotten into early foul trouble, as has been commented upon elsewhere, Tag most likely would not have even played last night as he simply doesn't match up with the Wolves style of play.

He's a role player; not a future starter. He'll make limited contributions but hopefully he'll make a difference when we're playing the type of game he is suited for.

I'll take Bibby over Cassell
I'll even concider Christie over Spree.
They are much deeper.
 
I am guessing that the results of this game will inspire Ostertag to do even more in the future. Ostertag means "Easter Day" auf Deutsch. The Tag has indeed been resurrected in Sacramento. It all makes sense.

He did really well tonight. He actually did well against Swift, maybe they should play him on smaller, more athletic guys more often.

Welcome back, ae77!

One more thing about Tag? Remember, this is essentially his training camp since his broken hand prevented him from doing much of anything at the beginning of the season. I think he's finally starting to feel comfortable and I think we're going to be glad we have him.
