I think you still go with the big monster -- they are just too rare and too potent once they hit their stride. That said, Kevin Durant has done everything possible to try to change that opinion. Helluva impressive. How about we get both? :p

Now, I like that thinking! :D

I agree. One week ago I would have answered Durant, but Oden had one heck of a weekend. Oden has gotten progressively better throughout the year. Perhaps he just feels better about the wrist, but I have seen alot more from him on the offensive end. He's going to be hard to handle on the offensive end and dominant on defense. He gets compared to guys like Shaq, Duncan, Robinson, Parish, and Olujawon, and they all have championships. One thing I noticed from him this weekend was how well he sets and then rolls off of screens already, and the fact that he can recognize and pass out of a double team. You would like to see more fire, but then he's not going to be a locker room cancer either.

Oden all the way. They'll both be starts. Durant will probably be better sooner. But with the proper development Oden's gonna be a monster

one thing that would worry me is how well our current coaching staff will do developing someone like Oden

They'd tell him that shotblocking is overrated, and then move him to the perimeter and encourage him to take jump shots.

Ok, I finally got it. Was tough with Memphis dropping so much salary this offseason, but works:

Step #1: win the lottery and get the #1, draft Oden

Step #2: Ron retires

Step #3: trade:

Mike Bibby $13.5 mil
Brad Miller $10.5 mil
Abdur-Rahim $5.8 mil
John Salmons $4.8 mil
------------
TOT: $34.2mil

for

#2 pick in the draft, approx $5.0 mil (draft Durant)
Scott Padgett approx $15.0 mil (sign and trade for max contract)
Chucky Atkins approx $15.0 mil (sign and trade for max contract)
---------
APPROX TOT: $35.0 mil

I'm not sure I've ever seen a dual sign and trade before, but its probably legal. ;)

I really couldn't care less who we get out of those 2. If we are lucky enough to get a top 2 pick and both of these lads declare for the draft, I would be stoked to get either.

If we end up with #1 pick I would suspect that Petrie would pick Durant because he would be the type of player GP likes more than Oden.

Either way, I wouldn't be fussed one bit.

Tough one. Real tough. I would have to say Greg Oden as the only real young center in the NBA is Howard and Ming.

After that 23-point, 22-rebound game last night, I'd say Chandler has to be in that list somewhere.

As for the poll, no doubt Durant could be a big-time scorer. But if you plopped Oden into the Kings' lineup as it stands today -- and I'm not advocating standing pat, please don't get me wrong -- and they're probably a 6th seed. He just solves so many of their shortcomings.

Atkins
Martin
Padgett
Durant
Oden

I like it.

It has to be Greg.
Durant is too hyped up - it will be PR disaster for a team that decides to trade first or second pick so getting both of them is just not going to happen. Kevin has many areas of weakness where he certainly can improve but is below average for an NBA wing right now: handles(Doug would probably school him and Ron I hope will ;)) and D are first that come to mind. Also forwards that like to post up will expose him badly. Those are repairable deficiences but some guys still weren't able to improve in those areas.
On the other hand Greg is doing very well on D (just watch two games of one of OSU opponents: against OSU and against any other team with good defense) and since complete recovery from his injury he looks better than any NBA centers of the past (of course comparing only their freshman seasons).

A quick note: Durant will never play power forward. He is a 2/3 at the next level, which is why his stock is so high. There are plenty of 6'9" guys who can shoot and handle a little bit, but there have not been any who could play shooting guard in the NBA since Magic.

brick,

you crack me up. dual sign and trades.. ;) you never know though.

....maybe Oden develops a Patrick Ewing jumper and Kevin McHale post moves to go along with his shot blocking and rebounding.........

......perhaps, Durant grows another 3 inches (at 18 it could happen) and packs on another 40 lbs of muscle like Karl Malone.

it would be fun to actually have to make this decision.

Yeah, I don't think there'd be any Kings fans crying if we got either one, not that there's much chance of it. But, unrealistic as this thread may be, at least it is one of very few where we can discuss draft picks without somebody saying "That guy will NEVER make it in the NBA!"

i wouldnt mind seeing either one. they are both a major improvement over what we have right now. with a new coach and either oden or durant at the pf/c position we could hit 50 wins next year. healthy and out of trouble

While I think Durant will most likely be better down the road, but you cannot pass on a big man when available that has Oden's skillset.
