Who Gets the Minutes?

Kingster

Hall of Famer
I'm betting that Thompson averages 10 minutes a game next year. Hawes maybe averages 15 minutes a game. Miller and Miki still get the vast amount of minutes. Maybe Sheldon plays every now and more if somebody gets injured. (Of course, KT will be sitting all the while on the bench smirking). Reggie wants to go the playoffs next year, right? So do really think that Thompson and Hawes are going to be getting 30+ minutes a game? 20+ minutes a game? I think Reggie plays Miller and Miki like mules until the last game that we are officially out the playoffs next year. How many minutes do you think Thompson and Hawes average next year?

i hope thompson and hawes get a lot of minutes to try and improve, but i doubt they will get much minutes with miller and moore.

Well if we get rid of one of Miller or Moore.. that frees up so much more time for the youngsters..(Hawes, Thompson, Williams)

Hawes could split the time at Center with the remaining vet...and
Thompson and Williams could battle it out for minutes at PF...

honestly tho im sure most would agree with me that we want to see Hawes and Thompson eventually starting together next year. Which is IMO best case scenario.

Reggie doesn't seem to like developing players much, so I suppose it depends on how hard Geoff and the Maloofs lean on him. I'm not expecting them to get as many minutes as they would elsewhere, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I'd almost bet you'll be proven wrong. Reggie did pretty good developing players at New Mexico, and I think he's going to be very happy to be able to do so again with a nice group of young players.

I strongly suspect we're going to see some interesting player movement once July gets here.

The Maloofs may not have wanted to "rebuild" but we're in rebuild mode now, and I think they've given Petrie the green light to get it done.

your righ VF not sure who if anybody decent is coming but, I am willing to bet a few are going.

i remember somewhere in the articles that petrie said they will accelerate hawe's growth...

meaning one of the bigs will go this summer..

a lot of teams NEED a guy like miller like Cleveland (they need low post scoring and passing BAD) Chicago (scoring Center) and Minnesota..

so im guessing if brad goes Spencer takes 30 mins mikki starts at 4 and gets 30 plus mins and Jthompson gets 15 or so minutes.... and Shelden gets 5

if brad stays..

Spencer gets 10 and THompson gets 5 and Shelden gets 5.....

either way if they WANT to accelerate the growth of these players then they need to move the logjam in our bigs... namely KT SAR, Moore and Brad.... Moore has no problem being the energy bench kind of guy... but heres to hoping thompson out works the other bigs and gets playing time together with hawes

yeah the maloofs probably got a little nudge from reality and Started the rebuilding just NOW.... technically our rebuild mode was last year and now... musselman didnt count... god that group was a mess... :(

maloofs have always wanted the compete and rebuild mode at the same time... sadly it didnt work :P

My guess is Thompson starts. He's ready physically and has the bball IQ, skillset to build on. He's probably the best PF we have already.

I have to disagree because I feel you start the rebuild through the draft, and the players that were obtainable by the Kings weren't sought after. I think there might be a move or two, but I think the biggest news this summer in re: to the Kings will be whether or not Artest stays, and/or Beno re-signs.

I don't think there will be any trades before the start of the year. The kings just don't seem to do the whole "trade thing" when the team isn't very good. Not sure why when the Kings suck we don't make moves, but when we are good it seems we pull the trigger a lot more.

BTW; I believe Thompson will get minutes. Theus's job is secure and I think he won't be worried about wins as he was last year as long as he coaches well, the product on the floor is trying, and the players get along with the coaching staff.

thompson, shelden, spencer and patrick ewing jr. moore, sar, and thomas can't get it done. which we've been seeing for the past couple seasons now. BENCH THEM and let the younger guys play.

I'd also point out that, in a year packed with really talented young players, we, at #12, were the first team to pick a senior... and we followed it up with two more seniors! This may be due in part to Geoff's being very cautious on draft night, but it's also consistent with "refurbishing" instead of rebuilding.

I await the revolutionary developments of July... or not.

I disagree. I think Theus will be worried about winning because he's a coach. Sure, he needs to get Thompson playing time, but at the same time, he wants to win. If he didn't, then I don't wont him as a coach.

What do you mean bench them and let the younger guys play? Thompson, Sheldon, Spencer Patrick Ewing Jr are the young guys.

I don't want to see Mikki Moore get any minutes at all. I mean is there really a more pointless player on our team? He's old, can't rebound, can't play defense, won't help lead our team to the playoffs and won't be apart of our future at all. So why even play him at all? Giving Moore any more than 15min a game is just absurd and a waste of valuable developmental time for the youngsters.

Miller can still play and is probably a valuable teacher for Spencer. Unlike Mikki, he actually can help lead the team to the playoffs. I'd like to see him around for another year and if the team is in contention for the 8th seed, I can see him grabbing close to 10 rebounds/gm again.

By all rights its Hawes and Thompson -- that is how you rebuild. You get your kids out on the court, get them experience, and see what you have.

I do not trust Reggie to get with the plan though, especially not in a contract year. So he may need a little "help" from the front office trading away his temptations. Unfortunately I do not have much confidence in our front office that way either -- if anything we have repeatedly signed vets right in front of our young guys (Jackson -- Hedo, Peeler -- Wallace, Bonzi -- Kevin, Salmons -- Cisco, Mikki -- Hawes). Its almost as if Geoff WANTS to bury guys and create roster confusion. Its just got to end. Even if it involves somebody slapping Geoff silly and holding his pet chihuahua hostage until the free agency period is over. I just will have to see it to believe it.

i agree with you.

i would be all for trading miller to the bulls for hinrich which would take care of part of the problem, freeing up minutes for hawes and getting us a starting pg. then trade artest/thomas/williams/douby to the lakers for odom/ariza/farmar/sun yue which would get us a starting pf who can rebound, a back up pg that doesnt cost the mle and a back up sf.....

this would be a playoff contender and odom would be an expiring contract which would give thompson time to develop... unless miller is injured or traded hawes wont get any minutes. bynum was the same way last year, he didnt get any minutes until kwame got injured and then he blossomed into a starting quality center.

hinrich/farmar
martin/garcia
salmons/ariza
odom/thompson
hawes/moore

i like this team... this would be a competitive team with a nice combination of youth, athleticism and outside shooting...

i was saying bench miller, thomas, sar and moore.

Things like capitalization, punctuation, and grammar are your friend. Really cuts down on the difficulty in reading your posts. Well, at least somewhat.

I thought he golden retrievers. In any event, according to reports Management stepped in at the end of last year and let Reggie know what they expected in terms of playing time for the young players.

I do agree that most coachs will tend to protect their own butt first and formost. Some sort of guarantee from Petrie or the Maloff's that the win/loss record won't matter as much if he plays the young guys and he continues to get the team to play hard.

Whether Reggie likes it or not, he's responsible for their development, along with the coaching staff. I think that as long as Petrie see's development in the young players and the team, the wins and losses won't be that big an issue.

you're STILL taking time out of your day to correct someone else. hmmm.. funny

What are you basing this on? Hawes got his feet plenty wet last season and cisco made huge strides last season. My point is the rest of the YOUNGER players on the squad that dont start (martin) (beno) dont show much potential MAYBE Sheldon does cartainly Douby does not.

No, I'm doing my best to help this board stay legible and user-friendly. Your posts, among some others, can be difficult to read because you put no effort into language skills and making them easy to understand. Don't be bitter because you cannot properly communicate your ideas to others - it's not our fault.

So, I repeat:

Things like capitalization, punctuation, and grammar are your friend.

Use them.

What are you basing this on?

Hawes played the least minutes of any rookie drafted in the top 20-some last year, with the exceptions of Greg Oden, and the 2 guys wasted by Nellie. I did a complete statistical breakdown of that a few months back, search for it if you want the details. Justin Williams and Dahntay Jones were also underutilized. http://www.82games.com/0708/0708SAC.HTM

So, to answer your question, I'm basing it on the numbers.
