i want the guy that the kings' volatile once-in-a-generation center trusted, the guy that managed to reach him, the guy that had him performing at mvp-levels. now, it wouldn't be fair to give michael malone too much credit for big cuz's development. certainly much of that credit must go to cousins himself. but malone had his back. and, perhaps most importantly, cousins had malone's back. they had formed a clear partnership. malone set the tone, big cuz reinforced that tone, and rudy gay got right behind them. the team had clearly followed suit until viral meningitis threw a wrench into everything...
mike malone may not have been the coach that was going to lead the kings to the finals, but he was the first coach in nearly a decade who had the kings bought into a winning style of play. it was hard-nosed, it was ugly, but it kept the team competitive against tough western conference opponents that would otherwise outclass the kings in most respects. that the kings' brass favors their ideology [and inexperience] over results speaks more to their [lack of] professionalism than malone's. as a fan, i'll take the results, thank you very much, pockmarked though they may have been in this extremely early stage of the kings' movement away from a losing culture...
given the poll's choices, i suppose i'll take george karl's veteran experience coaching winning teams over any other option, but i'm not looking forward to seeing my team revert back to all of their bad habits on the defensive end while the kings' continue to preach "offense offense offense" and "gimmicks gimmicks gimmicks."
