If I am to pick only one, my pick would be Spencer Hawes. Hawes is the only one who has consistently shown his desire to WIN by exerting his best effort both offensively and more importantly defensively.
Nevermind that Hawes is still not the finished product we want him to be - YET. You seldom see such dudes at 7' 0" tall with talent and desire to be both dominantly good offensively and defensively. He could turn out to be our most valuable piece either at #4 or #5.
My second pick will be Martin. But I wouldn't blink an eye in trading Martin for the likes of a 2-dimensional player like Gerard Wallace. I just want my elite pieces having both offensive and defensive skills, and not the sissy type of players who only like to shoot and score. Martin in his 4th ( or 5th year ) haven't shown he has "IT".
Third would be a fully motivated Miller. Well, we all hate his whining. But I still believe Miller can still perform if fully motivated.
Hmmm, fourth maybe Thompson. But at 6' 11" power forward player who can only average less than 1 block a game? I am not too high on him. But of course, he's got talent, the right effort to improve, and is still young and can still be developed into a defensive player.
Last is Udrih. He is my poor man's version of the old version Bibby with a better defensive skills.
But I wouldn't let go of my other key players yet, if not in exchange for a superstar like Kobe, Howard, and Paul, or even the rookie Oden.
My key players would be:
#5 Miller ( 7' 0" ) or Hawes ( 7' 0" )
#4 Hawes ( 7' 0" ) or Thompson ( 6' 11" )
#3 Thompson ( 6' 11" ) or Greene ( 6' 11" )
#2 Martin ( 6' 7" )
#1 Udrih ( 6' 3" )
Plus key players coming off the bench will be :
Salmons and Garcia for #1, #2, and #3
Brown at #1
How many times have we seen these guys play healthy together?
Once, maybe twice, or the most three times.
I believe we have a playoff team, if not an elite team for the future. What we need is to be able to fast-track the development of our young players, find the right identity/chemistry of the team ASAP, and play the key players many times over and over again and we'll start winning.
How can we do these?
Maybe we should replace coach Theus.
