I mean really, how could he possibly see any point in trying to "compete" this year? The veteran core of Artest, Bibby, and Miller is not going to work and will never be a championship team. There is no way to build around them because of not enough cap space and not enough star players available in the free agent market. The draft picks will be in the 12-16 range and while ok players might be available, but very doubtful any big prospects will be gotten. This team is just a bunch of ok-good vets that have been randomly slopped together with no vision behind it.
With the next couple of drafts being extremely loaded drafts a lot of teams are going to be content with cutting their losses if it doesn't look like they're going to compete for anything. We need to make a big change and start planning and aspiring towards bigger things. This patchwork way of running the team doesn't work, especially when you don't have a cornerstone player. The longer we wait to do this the harder it will be to turn the corner. We have to be proactive and be the masters of our own destiny.
Ron Artest, Mike Bibby, and Brad Miller are the three main players that need to be moved. I stress the need to move Ron Artest the most because his talent and inexpensive salary probably makes him the most attractive in a trade of the 3. Also I doubt he'll tolerate much losing before he starts blowing up and demanding a trade, better off just trying to prempt that. Brad Miller needs to be moved because he needs to be part of partciluar offenses that cater to his skills rather than a rebuilding process where you're trying to define your game. Moving him for expiring contracts is all that is really needed since he still has a hefty contract left. As far as Bibby goes I don't see that much of a need to move him since he may very well opt out this year and that would give us cap relief, but with his improved play as of late and him being a good vet pg he could bring in some valuable commodities. The other big reason of moving these guys are LOSSES, as absurd as it sounds it is important for us to lose this year since the chances of us getting to and making any noise in the playoffs is slim and none.
Yea it sucks to have to endure a losing team for a couple of years (maybe more), but consider the alternative. For me, it's more frustrating to watch a team like this year hover around .500 with a bunch of highly paid vets with no hope for a championship than a young team that loses a lot more but there's hope and joy in watching a young team mature and grow and have a future.
Some people will argue that rebuilding isn't as easy as a snap of the finger, well obviously it isn't but it is a lot better than the alternative of .500 records and 1st round exits. Being a "middle" team in the NBA is the worst possible position to be in, you're never going to compete for the championship and you're not going to get a shot at the best picks in the draft. Even if you're a cellar dweller at least you're going to be in the high lottery and always in a position of possibly grabbing the next franchise player that you can build around and turn it around. Yea, it's blown up in team's faces, but when it's done right and done smart it works out into championship hopes. No matter what direction we go in (assuming we actually choose a direction), we have to do it smart if we want success. So saying that rebuilding doesn't work sometimes is irrelevant because all directions don't work sometimes, you have to do it intelligently to have success.
I know this has been talked about a lot, but I get the feeling that the FO is just trying to ignore what really needs to be done and is trying to pull the wool over our eyes and act as if everything is going to be fine and it's just a "rough patch". Like saying the word "rebuild" is going to start a riot or something. Newsflash, things are already bad and while rebuilding is never pretty it at least involves hope for the future and a chance to recreate a team's identity. And that's exactly what this team needs A NEW IDENTITY, this team is in disarray after the inevitable dismantling of the "golden era" and we have to move on instead of this staggering mode of uncertainty. The concept of rebuilding must be accepted amongst the kings fans in order to encourage the front office of doing the right thing. This is our only shot, we have to seize the moment and choose our own destiny instead of being caught into the trap of long term mediocrity brought on by the hope we can stumble across a star player or a detroit-esque team. It's just not a realistic hope, we have to do this the right way and the way most successful teams get it done.
