What's With The Sacramento Bee??

Fresno King

Starter
Let me get this straight: Geoff Petrie and Coach Musselman are in Orlando for pre-draft workouts, the Kings don't have any assistant coaches yet, the players are just starting to get to know Muss, free agency is right around the corner, and there haven't been any stories on the team since he was hired??? I don't want to be reminded about Robert Horry's buzzer beater! I don't need another arena story (we need one, but everyone's been treading water on the issue for years now)! Can I get some comments from the players about Coach Muss??? ANYTHING???

What the hell is going on??

Or does this happen all the time???

There aren't any real Kings stories breaking right now... I'm pretty sure Sam Amick is in Orlando and will probably file a story in a day or two. And what kind of comments would you expect from the players about Coach Muss? Some of them aren't even in town and haven't even really met him yet.

It's TDOS. You'll just have to accept that the Kings aren't hot news right now.

Speaking of Amick...is anyone else a fan of his writing style? I personally don't like him that much! His writing for whatever reason is many times unclear and scattered in my opinion.

And although I've been critical of Voisin's views on many things...I appreciate that she writes well and makes it wasy for us to understand the point of her articles. The same goes for McNeal, Breton, etc. They're all prety clear on what they're trying to say...but in my opinion, Amick's got some work to do.

I saw that blurb and said, "HECK NO!,"

Not having seen it, was McNeal suggesting that Muss SHOULD do it, or suggesting that Muss WAS doing it? If its a), ok, that's just Marty being dumb, no biggee. If its b), well that's Muss being dumb. ;)

(actually I say that, but in some ways a guy like St. Jean is the sort of failed ex-coach who actually does pop up as an assistant around the league from time to time (think Carlesimo, Phil Johnson etc.). Just would rather not even have a hint of the old days around here if we can avoid them.)

You know...when I saw the headline...I just said heck no and moved on...I didn't actually read it. Plus....like you said...I don't want Gary St. JEan's hand in this organization anymore. He's a great guy, but a lousy couach and a lousy GM. The only good move he ever made was drafting Arenas and hiring Musselman...but look how that turned out for GS.

Knowing MArty McNeal as a pretty reasonable guy...for the msot part...I think he was joking.

Since some are curious, at the bottom of this article: http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story/14265564p-15077822c.html

Why not King St. Jean?
New Kings coach Eric Musselman needs a few good assistants. Why not consider former Kings coach and ex-Golden State general manager Garry St. Jean as a lead assistant? St. Jean gave Musselman his first head-coaching position at Golden State. Some people say St. Jean's best spot in the game is as an assistant.

guess I'll chime in on this thread. In past 3 days I had Kings team and coach article in the San Jose Mercury, San Diego Union (coach went to Univ San Diego), and media in Orlando, Texas, Los Angeles, etc. But nothing from the Bee. Someone there must have gone to pre-draft camp in Orlando? or did they? There have been workouts at Arco/training facilitiy I read about in Hoopsworld. But not in the Bee.

Is something, like severe cutbacks, going on? or what?

Let's see. They have the Monarchs coverage, which I'm very glad to see. They have the U.S. Open (no problem with that). they have hype about the upcoming Sacramento Open at CalExpo (volleyball with a picture of a chick in a bikini), they have pretty good coverage of the World Cup and they have stuff about the Giants. And, of course, there is that finals match between the Heat and the Mavericks going on...

I'm sorry but the Kings aren't at the top of the sports news right now. I suspect there will be some kind of comprehensive article about workouts, draft potentials, etc. but at this point I don't think the priority is on the Kings. And, quite honestly, I agree with that decision.

The article in the San Jose and San Diego papers were because of local ties to our new coach. Some of the other stuff is primarily filler or rumors that have yet to be substantiated.

There are a lot of ACTIVE sports stories going on. When you look closely at the Bee, I really think they're doing a pretty good job of covering most of them. And I'm one of the Bee sports department's biggest critics.

;)

why are people so bewildered at a lack of kings news? TDOS is usually like this, and with it being the second straight year that the kings have been bounced in the first round--thereby extending the time in between season's end and the draft--it should come as no surprise. after the draft, and after july 1st, there will be some news to report. until then, nobody has much to say other than the usual PR bull****:

"we're disappointed that our season ended early, but we're excited about next year under coach muss."

there, i just summed up anything the players would have to say for y'all.

:D

Player reaction to Muss

Whenever there's a coaching change, the local media covering that team should feel responsible to get player reaction. And, as a fan, I'm very intetested to hear what Mike Bibby, Brad Miller, Ron Artest and the guys have to say about Coach Musselman. The Bee asked the players what they thought about the Artest deal and this is no different. I'm sure Amick and Team Sac Bee have ways of getting in touch with the players during the offseason. It's June 15th and I still haven't seen one story from the Bee about what the players think about the move. It affects them the most, doesn't it? And I know there's other stuff going on in the sports world, but the Kings are the talk of the town 365 days of the year. And yes, the Kings are the hottest sports story in Sac right now. All of us are on this website every day looking for any new tidbit of 411. You mean to tell me you don't want to know who Muss is interested in drafting? Who he liked at pre-draft camp in Orlando? Where the hell is that story? What about assistant coaches? Don't these reporters have sources? "Amick will have a story, don't worry." Still waiting, ya'll.

If the Kings aren't the hottest sports story in town right now, who is?

The 4-4 Monarchs?

The River Cats?

A's? Too early in the season.

Giants? Bonds passed the Babe already.

No, nope, uh uh, and nah.

It's the Kings... by a mile and a half. The draft, free agency, possible trades, and genuine interest will keep it that way. If there wasn't a coaching change, I'd be a little bit easier on the Bee.

It's JUNE 15, BTW. Not July.

As far as the Kings being the hot story right now? Nope. Wrong. The Kings right now are a simmering story. Nowhere near hot.

There are a myriad of other stories being covered AND only so much room for them to be covered. The fact we're always looking for information doesn't mean it's the only game in town.

The draft isn't for two more weeks. Free agency doesn't get interesting until July 1. There aren't any rumors of any trades floating around.

And the players aren't going to say much about the new coach. What comments were to be made have already been made. Look back in the threads from the past couple of weeks. The Bee has done a pretty good job of covering the Musselman story from just about every possible angle. Our interest notwithstanding, anything else they might print at this point would be mere conjecture.

It's like those rumors about Musselman supposedly picking out members of his coaching staff. There's been NO confirmation of those rumors. The Sam Amick article on Sunday (Kings notes) pretty much covered everything that's been happening that the press knows about.

The idea that the public is going to get every single iota of information about internal Kings business is just not realistic.

Clarification

Well, sacbee.com doesn't have the Sunday Kings notes story on-line for some reason (my only way of getting the Sacramento Bee), which is why I was bitching and moaning in my previous post. Am I just not seeing it??

Thanks to whoever put it on this site. It was an incomplete story, if you ask me. They went to pre-draft camp, right? Nothing about who Muss and Petrie were impressed with, what their #1 priority in the draft is, no interviews with guys who may have worked out with the Kings and were in Orlando too?

OTHER STORY IDEAS:

SUMMER LEAGUE. Bobby Jackson is playing, right? How about a 1-on-1 interview on his thoughts about possibly playing for the Kings again???

BIBBY'S THOUGHTS. On Musselman, the changing of the guard, getting adapted to a new philosophy, a full season with Artest, life without Adelman, changes in chemistry with a new coach, etc.

IS BRAD MILLER REALLY WORKING OUT? Call the dude. Is he hunting in Indiana, or getting in shape for Team USA tryouts? Address the conditioning issue. He's becoming Vlade Divac the sequel.

ON THE ROAD WITH RON RON. I would LOVE someone from the Bee to go on tour with Artest and let him speak out about his musical interests.

BONZI AND FREE AGENCY. What a difference a year makes. If he loves it here so much, would he take less $$$ to stay??? Are the Kings #1 on his list? Would he dare say otherwise? What's his take on his relationship with Muss? Is he like his dad? Bonzi could give us a different perspective about E-Muss IF someone would ask him for an interview.

FEELING A DRAFT. Ask Kevin Martin, Corliss Williamson and Francisco Garcia (all Kings draftees) what it's like to get 'the call' from an NBA executive. "You're our guy." What's the wait like? Were you nervous? Did you get any sleep the night before? Or the night after you were picked?

Step it up, Sacramento Bee. Think outside of the box and come up with some creative angles when covering the Kings during the 'dreaded offseason.'

By the way VF, with all due respect, your first response to my previous post (It's June 15th, BTW. Not July) makes you sound like your **** doesn't stink and a know-it-all. You're a rock-solid contributor to the site, but I wasn't impressed with that part of your reply.

all of those are hotter sports stories right now than the kings. this is because those are active sports, and active sports always make better stories than inactive sports. when the kings become an active team again (ie: the draft, trades, training camp, pre season, etc)...then they'll become a more interesting sports story. musselman has been hired, and the bee has reported all they need to report on that. when their writers come back from the orlando pre draft camp, i'm sure they will report more. until then, and until the draft, there just isn't anything to report. player reactions are not good sports stories in and of themselves. if somebody at the bee wrote that article, it would simply be a rehashing of all the other musselman articles, but with a few player reactions thrown in. given that the bee extensively covered the kings head coach hunt, i see no reason for them to return to it until there is something new and of value to write about.

Why would you waste your time reading a Kings article in this newspaper if there was an article?

With all due respect, I apologize. I meant to add the ;) emoticon.

As far as the rest of your post goes, some of those story ideas would probably would be nice articles - IF the Bee has the time, space and inclination to run them. Unfortunately, print media is undergoing a pretty drastic change in how they operate. The Internet is having a massive effect on revenues, with a number of papers having to make a lot of cutbacks. The Sacramento Bee is doing some restructuring. You can see it on their website and you can see it in their print version.

One of the problems with this "dead time" between the end of the season and the end of the year is that players really aren't that available to the media. If they're going to be free agents, they can't really talk about much until July 1. If they're on vacation, they really don't want to share time with the same people who shove microphones in their faces at work all the time.

Thanks, VF

I appreciate that. Nothing but love and respect for ya.

The Bee may not have the resources they need right now (didn't know that), but I think someone could head on over to the summer league games and talk to Jackson.

Sacramento is a one horse town: The Kings. Acknowledge the NBA playoffs, a golf thing, World Cup in Germany, baseball in San Francisco/Oakland. But those horses are not in our town. The Kings are. Several of us share the same point (no kings coverage) and acknowledge tight budgets but we have a beat writer (Sam Amick and a tid bit of Mighty Mac) who doesn't appear to cover the "beat". On June 5 was the last mention of the Kings (vs. The Maloofs) in the Bee:

"The Sacramento Professional Developmental League opens tonight at Capital Christian High School and will provide area basketball fans with opportunities to see players at all levels of the game.

Mike Bibby, Ronnie Price, Kevin Martin, Jason Hart and Shareef Abdur-Rahim of the Kings are slated to appear at various times during the league's season, which ends June 30 with an All-Star Game.
Former Kings favorite Bobby Jackson also is on the roster with Price and Martin. However, Jackson will become a free agent June 30, and his participation will be tagged to his need to stay healthy while he is without a contract.

Matt Barnes of the Philadelphia 76ers and Galt's Philip Ricci, who played last season in Spain, also are slated to play."

What have those guys been doing the past 10 days? anybody playing? scoring? running? what? at 7-9pm if not the Bee guys then maybe someone in the area could go to those games and let us out-of-towners know what they are doing. Anybody agree with that? Would be fun and interesting filler. eh?
