I don't know about specific current players, but here is the skill set I would like to see at each position, keeping in mind that Reke and Cousins have offense covered and cannot protect the rim or shoot threes. Also, I tried to make this realistic.
PG- confident, non-ball dominant point guard who doesn't need a lot of shots, can run an offense, and can hit open threes; would also help to not be a complete sieve on defense
Current NBA players who might fit that bill- Hinrich, Calderon, Augustin, Kidd, Billups, Beno (ironic), Fisher (but more so in his prime), Chalmers
Current roster- Isaiah could fit that role if he became a little less ball dominant. That might come as he gets more confident (i.e. doesn't feel like he needs to earn his touches). Jimmer could fill that role, but he needs a lot more confidence than what he has right now.
SG- Evans. Let him have this position, not some hybrid PG/SG/SF
SF- ultimate role player; must play gritty defense, must hit open threes, especially in the corner, and must not try to do anything else than this; good passer (i.e. smart guys who knows when to swing the ball) is preferred. Also preferable that they have some length.
Current NBA players- Batum, Battier, Kirilenko, Ariza
Current roster- lord knows we have a glut of guys who could fill this role if they were told too. Cisco seems to be adapting to this role well. I would be willing to try him out in this role further. Same with Donte- if you can convince him to just come in and shoot open shots and play defense I think he would be better. Sometimes less is more. I actually think we currently have the role player to play this role on our roster. We just need Smart to better identify it and define the role.
PF- shot blocker and defender who is averse to shooting or running the offense through him
Current NBA players- Ibaka, Chandler, McGee, Jordan, Dalambert (again ironic)
Current roster- we don't have anyone to fill this role unless Whiteside suddenly gets it together
C- DeMarcus
6th man- Instant offense; a gunner who can have flaws in his game otherwise, but knows how to score and make big shots in crunch time. Also must be willing to accept this role.
Current NBA- Harden, Crawford, Terry
Current Roster- THORNTON- tailor made position for him. He can still play 30 minutes per game, be the first option with the bench unit, and play crunch time
7th Man- gritty 4/5; doesn't need plays called for him to score (i.e. scores on junk plays, pick and rolls, offense boards); plays good defense, rebounds; can play 18-24 minutes a night. Think Scot Pollard.
Current roster- ideal role for JT. He is big enough to play 4/5
8th man- change of pace point guard; instant spark, hustle, best utilized to play 12-18 minutes per game; big enough to be a combo guard. Think Bobby Jackson.
Current roster- perfect role for IT. Maybe not the ideal size for this role, but he plays bigger than he is.
9th man- versatile 3/4; can score, defend, play multiple positions; tough guy
current roster- Cisco or Greene both fit the bill
10-13
4th big man- an extra big body; situational player (foul trouble, injuries, matchups) content to play 20 minutes one game and not play the next three; veteran presence
Current roster- decent role for Chuck, though I could be sold on a bigger guy, but who also brings Chuck's intangibles
Instant offense/shooter- an extra shooter to stretch a defense, provide a spark, get hot, start a big run; defense not required
Current roster- perfect role for Jimmer
Athletic swingman- willing to ride the bench, compete in practice, play defense, support the team (i.e. cheer)
Current roster- great role for Honeycutt
5th Big- either an elder statesman big man (i.e. end of his career) who doesn't mind not playing but is a great locker room presence, or a complete project youngster
current roster- Whiteside would fit the fill
So my ideal (and realistic) roster would be
PG: low usage floor general not currently on roster
SG: Reke
SF: Cisco/Greene
PF: shot blocking defender
C: Cousins
6th: Thornton
1st Big- Thompson
Bench PG- IT
versatile swingman- Greene/Cisco
4th Big- Chuck
shooter- Jimmer
athlete- Honeycut
Project- Whiteside
By the way, I look at this, and I look at how we played the last 6 weeks of last season, and I can't help but wonder where we would be with Daly and Beno still on this team. They were good role players. Should have kept them, let the team grow together, define roles, and see what happened. Could have upgraded Beno at a later date and replaced Daly as he got older. Sigh...
